I don't get the hate. They're not just chili peppers or even hot chili peppers, they're RED hot chili peppers. Do they not know that their catalog can be heard on spotify or youtube for free now

Whoever owns the catalogue gets revenue from any legal playback or purchases - Spotify, radio, iTunes, record sales, etc. It may be free to the listener, but they're still generating ad revenue. That gets split between Spotify and the catalogue owner. RHCP are essentially selling all future earnings for a payout today.
