It was released on the monochrome Neo Geo Pocket on December 25, 1998. It was designed as a conversion for Samurai Shodown IV, and almost all of its story events, endings and cutscenes are derived from its arcade cousin.
Most of the gameplay faults were addressed and fixed with its colored sequel, Samurai Shodown! 2.
