Damn you Eric for shattering my preconceived notions and biases about what Summoner Wars was about.

It does look to play fast, perhaps faster than I would like but I'm probably gonna have to pick the game up. The game setting and the factions actually look pretty cool. Different enough at least from other games. I was thanking Crom it wasn't just generic high fantasy factions pitted against each other.

The game is relatively cheap as well or at least compared to the stuff I've been buying lately.

@Lithy - read a post on reddit stating Zombicide is going to get printed in October - looks like the available copies people have now were the pre-orders from Kickstarter.

I imagine the price can run up quickly if you're trying to buy everything (hell, some people even feel the need to collect all of the individual faction dice) but the master set that has 6 factions and the board and markers is on Amazon for under $40 shipped. Factions and reinforcement packs (2 factions reinforced per pack with those) retail at $10 but I've seen and ordered them for under $7 each.

It can add up, but I don't feel the need to have it all at the beginning (and besides, they're all sold out now until the new stock comes in the beginning of October). And I most likely won't get any reinforcement packs until I have all of the factions (only halfway there at 8).

Zombicide looks awesome. I never did pick up Last Night on Earth after reading up on it, but Zombicide looks like it might be better (although relatively expensive. Damn you minis)

Dude...I would love to attend one of their events. I've known of the center for some time, glad you learned of it. You should check out some of their games. I bet you'd like A Game of Thrones and Battlestar Galactica because of the interactions you have with other players.

If I bought any of the reinforcement packs right off the bat it would be to get more...ORCS. Love those bastards.

I saw the game for as less than $40 on the board game retail sites I frequent.

I think not picking up Last Night on Earth was a good thing...now you have no excuse to get Zombicide.

I want to make a board game about Orcs.

Totally slipped my mind but there's an iOS version of Summoner Wars to play. Should be a good preview so you know what to expect, but I don't have an iPhone or iPad so I can't be sure.

So I know Catan talk is lame amongst actual game people, but since duf brought up backstabbing, I thought I would let you guys know of one of my brother's 'house' style rules. He feels that in Catan, you should be able to bullshit your trade. As in, I'll give 2 wood for 1 brick. You get your brick and then slide your two cards to your trading partner, but instead you hand over 2 sheep. His contention is that you either have to benefit greatly in only a few bullshit trades that you can pull off before people boycott you, or wait until the right moment to launch your bullshit trade ploy.

After he explained this, I laughed, then tried to convince others to play a round with that rule, no one would, instead they play with all their other bullshit no robber or steal from the bank rules. Horsehit!

Sounds like a terrible house rule.

Catan isn't terrible. I like it fine enough, it's just that there are other games I'd rather play.

What I appreciate about Leviathans is that portions (all?) of the game were released under a creative commons license. So you're free to like create your own stuff in the world. They're trying pretty hard to build up a community.

Yeah, some of these games with miniatures are a real kick in the wallet, price-wise. $90 MSRP? Sure, it doesn't sound that bad compared to video game prices, but when it's something you only get to play the few times you can get a willing group together?

I'll let one of you guys get it and tell the rest what you think.

I'll be really interested to find out how it compares to something like Last Night on Earth. LNOE may not have miniatures that look as nice, but it is half the price plus has that B-movie vibe that first got me interested in it.

So I was just browsing in the local game store today and was between a few two player card type games (Jambo and Jaipur), after seeing Agricola for 70 bucks I figured that I will unfortunately have to simply buy it online as much as I like the guys at the store, 20 bucks is too much of a difference.

ANYWAY, after lengthy browsing, I was about to settle on Jaipur, even though I still wanted something with more of a board, rather than a card management/trading type card game. Then I saw Pandemic. After a quick check 40 bucks wasn't a steal or anything, but a fair price. So we got that.

It fulfills a lot of my requirements, good with 2, better with more, solid but not simple or crazy complicated ruleset. We played one game on the Introductory difficulty and won, so we'll up it to Intermediate next time. We had a good time, I'm looking forward to playing it with 4.

I'll be shopping around for Agricola soon, hoping to get one for 50 bucks or so.

Also, I do want to check out Twilight Struggle but I fear that I will never convince the wife to play a game with me. Edit: Also, reading backward in the thread I saw the post about Labyrinth which sounds even more interesting as a theme, has anyone played it? How does it compare to TS.

Also also, I did see Zombicide for about 60, that still seems kinda high for me at the moment, I guess I'll be another one sitting on the sidelines until I hear some more rave reviews.

Also also also, heard about a game called Seasons while in the store today. Anyone know anything about it?

Also also also also, there was a guy having a private conversation about a board game with a castle defense type game mechanism. This was just something I overheard so I don't know the name, anyone have any hints?

I can't remember if Labyrinth uses the Twilight Struggle system or not. I haven't played it. Probably wont bother buying it - just not something I'm interested in any more. I would play it given the chance.

Check out 1989: Dawn of Freedom for a clone of Twilight Struggle with a slightly different theme. I haven't played it.

Nothing rings a bell for me regarding a Castle Defense game.

I just heard of Seasons early today when I was checking out some stuff on BGG. Didn't look in to it much - it seems to be getting hyped atm though.

My next round of board game purchases are probably going to be expansions.

I'm sure every time I post in this thread is like every time I hear someone say that they just heard about Blue Moon and how awesome it is, but I just got done reading through the entire thread, going backwards actually. So, now I'm at least versed on what has already been talked about.

Also, I feel like this new hobby is just a secret path back into my deep, dark nerdom that my wife will at least approve of...

We will, one day, meet, chug some beers and then play a round of Slug 2 and a board game of your choice Wes. I'll write it into my will....calling Bobak right now to make the changes.

Has anyone played Ugg-Tect? Apparently you have to act out instructions to your teammates using caveman words and hitting them with inflatable clubs. Sounds epic.

Just had our first playthrough of Agricola. Oof. This one is pretty complicated. I feel that the instructions are pretty poor, disorganized, and generally out of order for the structure of the game. Still wife and I had fun and I think we generally got it by the end.

Also played Shadows over Camelot this past weekend (appropriately after attending the Pittsburgh Ren Faire). The game kicked our ass but it was fun. Had it not been so late (or had I not been so drunk) I would have played another round.

Played a game called Munchkin and a Zombie Munchkin variant. Fun little, not very serious RPG-lite card game.

Munchkin is a good warm up game before you play your main game for the evening. It's best enjoyed with lots of booze.

Agricola is really good, but it definitely does get complicated if you use the cards. Most of the games I played when I first got it were the simplified version without cards. But after you have that down it can get a little boring unless you bring the cards into the mix.
