Yes, of course, seems obvious, but well that's the problem however. You simply cannot!
I will explain.
I finally received mine and I had the opportunity to test it out and here are my key findings & personal opinions.
some are positive, some are negative.
-- the neogeo boot up chime song is either "emulated" or "recorded". the audio crackles (has static)
(is this because it had to be programmed from scratch or "patched" for some reason?)
-- no memory card support for the game
(kind of sucks man. i like saving all my games at the last levels for easy viewing of the endings when i like)
-- no debug bios support (you cannot enter the work menu at all)
(was this on purpose by the programmers, or were they just lazy and it was an oversight?)
-- no Japanese title screen. (same as the English)
(this is kind of disappointing as I usually enjoy checking them out on all the games)
++ Japanese text on a JAPAN console, English text on a USA/EURO console
-- the game gives 3 credits, rather then the usual (normal) 4
-- cannot skip the neogeo logo boot up screen. (all carts allow you to do so) why not?
++ the title screen looks great. it looks like it very well could have been the original one from 1994.
++ they added a second copyright line for the additional programming, but the title still has the 1994 and FACE logo.
-- as a result of the "non debug bios compatible" program, we cannot confirm the product code number as 72!
(dude, this is like, a major bummer!) all we have is their word for it?
Remaining UNanswered questions I have:
?? does the game support the UniBios? (I prefer & use the debug bios so I have no way to test it with Unibios)
?? if yes, can the game be put into MVS mode with that bios?
?? if yes, are there mvs sub menus such as soft dip settings, etc.?
?? if yes, can the product code number be displayed?
--
?? and lastly, if "NO" is the answer to the above questions, and the MVS version they release later DOES function properly with other bios, then I would much rather have the MVS version in order to have the "complete" version and i also want to know why they did this? the "non-mvs compatible thing" has always been one of my biggest complaints of neodev groups games. so if that is what NCI is doing now, PLEASE tell me that it was just for this particular game because of programming limitations, being rushed for time, or being lazy and NOT because of "new policy" to be followed in the same manner as neodevgroup. NO WAY!
alright and lastly some freestyle thoughts on the game itself:
there are bits and pieces that feel like a neogeo game, but of course many parts of the game do not as well.
it does not "function" the same as a regular neogeo game. things don't flow smoothly from one screen to the next. it feels more like a diggerman or a vliner. such as, it runs off the hardware, but by using unorthodox methods. graphically, the pirates are well drawn, as are the gameplay elements and background graphics and on screen sprites, etc. but sound wise it is a little weak. the sounds are not as solid or strong like metal clicks and locks, but rather they are weak and they feel soft and light. the sprites themselves and characters don't "move" across the screen like a neogeo sprite would, rather they kind of just "float" from place to place. again, hard to describe these detailed things.
also the previous comment regarding the attract mode is incorrect. it does indeed "cycle through" from the intro, to the title, through game play demo, and then back again. it is just a very LONG cycle. be patient, and it does eventually do so.
edit: the game came with both the usa & jap inserts as well as both the usa & jap manuals. and the cart sticker itself is a "hybrid" with both languages present. so you basically get both packagings and can display the one you want.
