I was bored so I felt like dividing the Neo library by genre to see where the most saturation is. I don't give a fuck if people 30 years ago were doing the same thing. I don't see any stickied posts.

Fighting games eat up 1/3rd the total library.

And while I was at it. Neo Geo releases by year on a line chart.

I might do more graphs later.

Nice to see a breakdown of the genres! I'm a bit confused by the "other (5)" and "other (8)" categories (also think the 5 probably fit "sports" as do several of the 8).

Other (5) is under sports, so it is Sports Other. Then there's Other which has games I couldn't figure out where in the already available genres they could fit. I know Bang Bead, Flip Shot and Windjammers are all basically glorified pong games, but I've never considered pong a sport (closest real world equivalent might be table tennis).

Ah, that makes sense.

Not sure if any of these classifications are of any value, but here's what I'd call 'em:

Bang Bead = sports (tennis-ie/pong/air hockey type game)
Crossed Swords = fighting, first-person (with a hint of RPG)
Flip Shot = sports (tennis-ie/pong/air hockey type game)
Neo Bomberman = action (strategic maze)
Neo Mr. Do! = action (strategic maze)
Super Dodgeball = sports
Super Spy, The = fighting, first-person
Windjammers = sports (tennis-ie/pong/air hockey type game)

Everyone post your opinions on what the "Other" games genres should be, like what Joneo did. At some point I will re-evaluate them and put them in their respective genres and update the graph image.

(if I can find a line graph creator that can do 9 groups, I'd do a graph for Neo Geo genres per year, to show the ridiculous decline in variety as the years come to an end.)

Even though 93' and 03' both have 6 releases each, the former is unusually lean the the latter is unusually plentiful.

If I had to evaluate the other list:

Crossed Swords - Action/RPG
Neo Bomberman - Single Screen (strategy/maze)
Neo Mr. Do! - Single Screen (strategy/maze)
Super Dodgeball - Sports
Super Spy, The - Action (although this is close to Crossed Swords)
Windjammers - Sports

The Single screen category is pretty interesting, but I would almost label them as Strategy/Action, but it is kind of a hard category. I would agree though that Neo Bomberman, Neo Mr. Do, Zupapa, and NITD all share similar styles to fit in the same genre.

The games I didn't put a category on I haven't played enough to tell you.

Well, I've re-categorized all the games except Crossed Swords and The Super Spy. Thanks guys! I haven't a clue where those last two could go, they don't really fit into the already used genres.

I'm not sure your graphs and stats are very accurate. There is only one genre, really and that's fucking awesome.

Great stats! Going through my cd collection there is a surprising amount of shooters. We always knew of the NG as a fighting console but definitely covered more genres then that.

How long until someone "corrects" those genre colors?

1996 is the magical year no doubt.

Regarding Aggressors of Dark Kombat/ Gan Gan being labeled as fighting...it's basically ADK doing Slammasters without a wrestling ring (I won't even compare it to 3 count bout).

Should it be sports? Is it just a beat 'em up boss rush? I'm sure it's officially considered a fighting game, but it's obviously misleading.

Nice stats. Good to see the variety in the library when most people consider the Neo Geo a fighting only system.

To make it easier, why don't you use the genres already laid out by SNK...

http://neogeomuseum.snkplaymore.co.jp/english/catalogue/index.php

And I am not sure I would put 3 Count Bout and King of the Monsters down as Sport titles... surely they are just Fighting games as well..?

Because it's all terrible fucking engrish. I condensed it all down to 8 genres, genres most people understand, with a 9th one for oddball games.

3 Count Bout and KOTM1 are wrestling games.

How long until someone "corrects" those genre colors?

:kekeke:

Hahahahaha, nice to see someone noticed the color choices for fighting, shooting and puzzle.

Yeah that one was tough to fit into one genre. It definitely takes multiple aspects of fighting, beat em ups and wrestling... But I figured since you're still doing one on one fighting and it features moves not normally found in wrestling, it might as well go with the other fighting games. It's certainly the strangest fighter out of them all that's for sure.

Great list, but King of the Monsters 1 is under wrestling?

I was waiting for someone to ask this. Have you ever played KOTM1? It's a wrestling game. You fight in a ring that bounces you back, like a wrestling ring, you can use the ring to launch yourself into an opponent for an attack, like in wrestling, your moveset is primarily grapples and throws, like in wrestling and you even have to keep your opponent knocked on the ground for 10 seconds, just like wrestling. It is absolutely wrestling, it doesn't have enough in common with beat em ups or fighting games.

I like pie charts. What do you suggest I use instead?
