I'm working on Psycho-Pass right now, it reminds me of minority report + judge dredd + ghost in the shell SAC. In other words, it's fantastic.

Psycho-Pass is great. It was one the best things I watched last year.

I decided to give Log Horizon a shot and it's a lot deeper than I expected. It's one of those shows where I can't just watch one episode every so often, ironically, it's pretty addictive given the subject matter. Now, I'm eagerly anticipating season 2's Oct.4 start.
The character design is a little bland, otherwise, great story and exploration of the 'what if this were real' concept.

It's a really well written show, I can't wait for the next season

Anybody else seen any of Terror in Resonance? It's brand new and the first season is still airing in Japan, the premise is absolutely insane and it's got Shinchiro Watanabe as a director (busy guy as of late seeing as he just recently did Space Dandy)

Just finished the 13th episode of Garantia, need to watch the two OVAs now. Great series, my wife enjoys it as well. I am about 10 into Captain Earth as well and its pretty good, but a little convoluted at times.

second season of Haruhi Suzumiya was the last Anime i've seen lately. got season 1 like three years ago,
got the 3-hour Disappearance movie right when it first hit U.S. market, and the 2nd season just a few months back.

haven't seen or bought any Anime since, but i'm strongly considering THE RIGHT STUF's "ToHeart" complete collection.
i'm a real sucker for ORIENTAL LIGHT and MAGIC's (OLM) lovely character design,
first introduced to me via "Steel Angel Kurumi" about a decade ago...

as is Mahoromatic. the Anime has a bent towards raunchiness, -which some may or may not appreciate- but that aside
it is a fine series with a female lead that has a very attractive personality and a very pleasing face to boot.

Ai Yori Aoshi is solid gold IMO, among my favorite Anime series ever,
though i imagine many would probably find it distinctly on the trite and dull side...

So I've been watching the new season of Dragon Ball Kai for the Buu Saga. Oddly enough, I haven't seen any redrawn scenes or effects yet. Also, I know I'm not the only one who really fucking hated Babidi...

In other news, people still think Kai is bad because it's "heavily censored" and they have no idea that a better DVD/Blu-Ray version exists. Am I the only one who prefers Kai to Z? The way I see it is: Dragon Ball (manga) > DB (anime) > DBZ (manga) > DBKai > DBZ (anime) > DBGT. I like Kai because they filter most of the BS out. The only thing that irks me is the soundtrack change. Oh and the way that the animation style changes partway through episodes because they were cut and spliced kinda seems a little weird, but I'm fine with that.

I'm watching (middle of season 1) right now and damn i'm really digging it. I love it when they don't apologetically shy away from horrendous realities and this show definitely doesn't pull punches. I find myself saying "DAMN" pretty often but at the same time it doesn't feel overly violent for the sake of being violent. It all blends into the world very well.

Reminds a bit of GITS SAC mixed with Luther.

100% agreed. here's a quote I found on the wiki page from one of the creators:

He added that the team did not want to make a violent series but an "artistic series that just happened to have some violence included in it"

There were definitely some intense scenes, but after reading that, I really appreciated the approach. Kinda reminded of Kojima's narrative with Metal Gear, which is typically very violent, but was never intended to be "gory".

I loved the whole thing from start to finish and I'm chomping at the bit for season 2 to start!

as for me lately, I've been keeping up with Sword Art Online. I loved the first part of the last season, then I wasn't terribly wild about the fairy part, but I kept up. This current season has been so slow, with little build-up to action or excitement. Waaaaaaaayyy too much dialogue. I do still enjoy the characters, and general plot, but I was quite disappointed a few times after finishing an episode just due to the slow pace.

I only discovered Psycho Pass from this thread and it was/is incredible. I completely agree with Wachenroder's assessment; the fact that the writers didn't dumb down the content or the concepts was refreshing, and yes, I was shocked more than once; really lookign forward to see what they do with the second season next week.
Log Horizon season 2 starts today, and The Legend of Korra season 4 started last night, so there is plenty to watch for the next little while.

Has anybody else checked out Tokyo Ghoul? Kind of a silly premise but it's got some cool characters and is seriously twisted

The wife and I stopped actively following anime about 10 years ago. When the wife heard that Sailor Moon was coming back, we decided to peek our heads back in. So after powering through most of the obvious recommendations (Titan, Kill la Kill, Gurren Lagann, etc.), she's fallen back down the romance/mahou shoujo hole (that HAS to be the name of an h-anime) watching new Sailor Moon and Golden Time but while I've tried a couple of things (Hataraku Maou-sama, Sabagebu, Tokyo Ghoul), nothing has particularly grabbed me.

Any suggestions? It's possible that anime has gone to shit but also distinctly possible that I just don't care for it anymore. Still too many goddamn maid and moe shows (reason we stopped watching in the first place).

I watched all of Gundam Unicorn, finished up the last episode a few days ago.

It's really good when revisiting the old stuff, showing you the state of the Universal Century in UC 0096 and I love all the easter eggs, fan service and straight out Gundam porn. The production values are top notch and through the roof. Gundam has NEVER looked better, and it works really well in all the aforementioned respects.

The weaker stuff is all the new material. New characters, new mobile suits, new situations...none of this is really up to par with the older stuff, and it really shows through when both new and old are forced to occupy the same space. The only new things I liked were Zinnerman, Marida (who isn't really new, in a sense) and Martha. The rest of it is either pallid or just stupid, like a gun that can shoot through a mobile armor in a single shot, which is the epitome of anything BUT Universal Century Gundam.

It must be said, however, that there is a pivotal scene in Episode Seven that is sheer brilliance and magic. A scene between Full Frontal and Banagher, complete with a new interpretation of a CLASSIC Gundam song that must be seen and heard to be believed. It's not enough to redeem the elements of the show that don't work, but for that two minute span, it is extremely powerful to any fan of the older stuff.

I'd still recommend Gundam Unicorn to any fan of UC Gundam. It is a quality production with enough for any fan to appreciate and enjoy. It doesn't all work, but when it does...it works REALLY well.

I also watched the first two episodes of Gundam: Reconguista In G. It's a typical Tomino show. The first two episodes set the table very quickly, there is no wasted time and I'd argue that there's almost too much in the first two episodes. The character designs are unconventional, the story is quirky and sometimes silly and the characters are unusual to say the least. The encouraging thing about this is that it feels like every Tomino Gundam after Zeta, and I like every one he's done. They start really weird and unusually and end up paying off very well. It's a refreshing change of pace from the trend of most modern anime where the character tropes are instantly recognizable, the pacing is slow to nonexistent and you can see the beats coming from a mile away. It doesn't feel like other anime shows, and that is a good thing in today's cookie cutter anime industry. It feels like other Tomino shows, but I'd argue that's one of its absolute strengths. Will keep watching, as I expect great things to emerge out of this before it's all said and done.
