Well, after having spent quite some time with the game, here's the review.

I like the game, I would give it a 8 out of 10. However it could have been much better if they had fixed some flaws. The game is fun, quite intense, and has really nice graphics, specially in hi-res mode. Since they are not recycling any sprite stuff from low-res games (like Neowave and KoV), the 2D sprites don't look out of place with the 3D backgrounds and some 3D bigger enemies.
The game has around the same length of any Metal Slug, and I think it has quite a life if you try to beat it using as few credits as possible (or even 1cc). Although it is a Metal Slug rip-off, at least there are some new elements with the Dolphins and the special attacks you can use instead of grenades.

And now the flaws. The first one is that there are terrible slowdowns in many parts of the game. With the supposed power of the AW there is no excuse. The second is the animation of the main character, not only he is a bit slow, but he doesn't run nor walk, just "slides", without crossing his legs, like "walking sideways". If he had a running or a classical down+jump slide (like sunset riders or MS5) the game would be a bit fresher. The funny thing is that when you clear a stage, he starts running in a better animation but you can't control it.
I also feel that the game should have more secrets and "funny hidden jokes" like the Metal Slugs and Demon Front as it would really ensure more replayability.

So far, for me is the best AW game I have played (the other being Demolish Fist, Knights of Valour and Neowave) and I think right now is the second cheaper and easier to find game (the first being Demolish Fist), so I highly recommend it.

And now the screenshots. The game looks much smoother in hi-res, but on the TV looks great too. Take care that my camera sucks, speciall when picturing the TV.

I think on the second level there is some "loading" when you go from the water onto the boat its like a long pause, for me the game was o.k too its just a shame there is not anything better of this type for the system.

man those low-Res shots hurt my eyes

The low-res shots don't do justice to it, I guess it's my camera's fault, but the game also looks very well in the TV. In the monitor it looks sharper though, but I can play no problem in the TV too.

can the low/high res mode work on another cab? Some like a Blitz cab?

Well, it depends on the cab monitor. If it is is 15 khz only compatible, then you can only use it in low res. If it supports 31 khz, then you can use hi res.

By the way, shameless plug: if somebody wants to trade Dolphin Blue for, for example, Guilty Gear X 1.5 or Rumble Fish, have a look at this:

I hope I praised DB enough to have somebody interested in this :kekeke:

I just made a trade involving that extra Dolphin Blue I had and got Neowave. It came with an Atomiswave manual, and I made a very interesting discovery:

To change the Atomiswave options in the configuration screen (accessible via DIP switch 2), you need the test and service buttons. We knew that you could use 1P start instead of test to navigate, and some game (like Demolish Fist) allowed the use of some other button to select options, but not all, and in the rest service was a must. Well, if you press the 1P start button for more than 1 second, it acts as service, so you can change the options with just the start button, which is very convenient.

Got my Atomiswave system about a month ago.

Also got 3 carts for a total of $440.

Dolphin Blue
Demolish Fist
Guilty Gear X 1.5

I think I have gotten the most playtime out of Dolphin Blue.

I have been searching furiously for Sushi Bar, but to no avail. If only I had some Japanese friends with lots of time on their hands to go looking for it. Sigh.

I'm working on an Atomiswave FAQ here:

Coming soon: pics of mobo/carts and reviews/screenshots of games.

Read through your stuff, good work, Amano!

Question for you or anyone else who knows: what the heck is Ken Ju? New ATW games are always welcome, and I sure hope this one doesn't turn out like Force Five. Anyone played or bought it?

edit: found a video of some gameplay. Very low quality video, though, so it's hard to see much:

Hmm, I wonder how much loose copies are selling for in Japan for both of those. Ahkibara, Beelze, anyone know the answer to that?

I have an Atomiswave with the following:

Demolish Fist (Japanese)

The Knight of Valor 7 Spirits (Japanese)

Dolphin Blue (Japanese)

Guilty Gear Isuka (Japanese, PS2 verson is better)

About KOV 7 Spirits: GS is indeed a Chinese company.

Also, does anyone know the code to get the 7th Character? I know its done at the character select screen. You fight him later in the game, but hese not the real end boss. I think you must use him to see the "True" end boss, but I'm not sure.

I have an AW with the same games, and I too would like to know how the 7th spirit can be un-locked!!!!

What are the chances that arcadner would be selling one - avoid him, total scumbag:

Sells me asian boards described as 100% USA blue, which I finally get a refund on after much debate...

then turns around and burns someone else with the same exact crap.

Back on topic: my IO board and 3P/4P harness showed up today. As I mentioned earlier, $102 for the IO board from a distributor... and $68 for the harness

aw_io.jpg

This harness should only work for GG:I. You need a different one for shooters and yet another one for the driving games. Not only that, but there are sub boards as well. There was a pair of Ranger Mission carts on ebay a few weeks back. I almost jumped on one, but after putting together the cost of the cart, the replacement guns from Happ, this IO board, the other harness for the guns and the gun sub board... it quickly took the wind out of my sails.

Has anyone played Ranger Mission? How is it?

pretty boring actually. very simplistic and unrefined. not the worst lightgun game ever and the rifles are ok, but I preffer the other shooter with the laser sight.

Rumble Fish is pretty fun, but not great. The sequel is already out, might consider waiting for the price to drop on it instead. Or you could get the JP PS2 version of The Rumble Fish for $60 instead of spending the $ for the ATW cart. I had it and traded it for Neowave. Fun, and I'd probably buy it back if the price was right, but it would have to be kind of low given what I just mentioned.

Neowave is solid, but it still tends to sell for very high prices and is very similar to KoF 2002. It has 3 grooves, and being able to just-defend in KoF is pretty sweet, but it's not revolutionary by any means.

If you're a Guilty Gear fan at all, Isuka is really good. And though I've never played it, there's actually an X 1.5 on eBay right now.

Of all my games (Neowave, GG: I, Demolish Fist, Dolphin Blue, and Knights of Valor: the Seven Spirits), I have played Dolphin Blue and Isuka by far the most. If you like shooters you may like Dolphin Blue (but read through the rest of the thread, a lot of people don't like it), and it's not too exorbitant, price-wise. And KoV is a fun 2-D beat 'em up that's worth picking up and owning, IMO.

Good luck!
