It's not so much early stuff, but SNK had a sweet spot from around 95-99 when they made the best fighting games. Most of the fighters they made after that, while not terrible, couldn't match the earlier titles, with KOF 2002 being one of the few exceptions.

SSVS, while pretty, just isn't very good. It's not terrible like some of the earlier Neo fighters, but SS 1-4 and both Last Blades are considerably better. The only people who cream over SSVS are noobs and collectors.

1) Fatal Fury Special -Tung's stage, Mai raft stage, two fight planes, destructible scenery, that mosh attract intro music. Perfect.

2) Art of Fighting - There is charm in it's simplicity, chunky sprites and meaty punches. Fucking hated the AI in AOF2 but the fortune teller stage was one of the best in the series. AOF1 wins for me because I can actually get somewhere with it. And because King's stage was classy as fuck.

3) Last Blade - Out of all the later fighting games this one stands out for me. A beauty.



Not forgetting KOF94/95, Fighter's History Dynamite, Real Bout and Real Bout Special. All classics.

It's interesting no one is really picking later games like SSVS and KOF2003. Everyone prefers the early stuff?

While I do enjoy SSVS for the audio & video aspects, it doesn't make my top 3 fav list. Top 10, maybe.

Personally I like these as my top 3

Kizuna Encounter
Waku Waku 7
Fatal Fury (was first AES game I owned BitD, dat nostalgia)

If you take the nostalgia for FF out of the equation then I'd put Matrimelee in it's place.

Though honestly I only hate 2 of the fighters on the Neo. Galaxy Fight & Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer. Both nice looking games, but horrid controls make them unplayable IMO. I'd much, much rather play Fight Fever than either of those two.
