I've been around since the beginning and I always read that this is Hanzo or Fuuma...
I can't believe this because ADK never incorporated SNK characters in their games and vice versa.
Am I wrong?

Jubei swims in the tank on Mai's stage..Jubei has a crush on Mai...or from one of the movies he was her teacher(?)

Eiji loves Mai. When you beat the game with him in art of fighting 2 he says so.
That's probably him stalking her.

Only problem with that is... Fatal Fury 2 came out a year or two before AoF 2. Do you really think SNK had the forethought to put a character in the background who hadn't even been created yet?

I remember hearing somewhere that it's actually the ninja character that was supposed to be Mai. IIRC, in the back of the Fatal Fury 2 manual they state that the original design for their ninja character in the game was a man. This changed over the course of the game's development until it finally evolved into the bouncy ninja we all know and love!

Only Eiji didn't exist yet at that point. It's true though, SNK is know for making fuck all sense a lot of the time.

You never know... IMO, the fishrider does look an awful lot like Eiji. It's more than a co-inky-dink. Maybe that guy was in fact the original male ninja character design that was bumped out- and they decided to make a real character out of him for AoF. I'll almost wager that he IS Eiji.

Look at what BrooklynSkin said about Eiji & Mai regarding Eiji's ending in AoF 2.

I think that character is Eiji. I think even EGM pointed that out years ago. I MIGHT have the issue that says that, but I have almost ten years worth of EGMs and I'm not about to search them over something so trivial!

Uhm...No.

Fatal Fury 2 --- 1992
Fatal Fury Special --- 1993
Art of Fighting 2 --- 1994

That is absolutely not Eiji Kisaragi in Mai Shiranui's background. Eiji Kisaragi did not exist when Fatal Fury Special was being made.

The Eiji Kisaragi ending in AoF2 was a joke ending. This should have been obvious since Eiji flirts with EVERY female he sees. Anyone who's played through AoF2 knows this from his pre-fight quotes with King and Yuri Sakazaki.

Further, Eiji Kisaragi does not have a headband or a scarf as per the ninja in Mai Shiranui's background.

Now, originally I personally had always just assumed it was Hanzo Shiranui. Later I thought it was probably Hanzou from World Heroes, then disregarded this because, as Big Bear said, ADK and SNK never really interchanged their characters.

HOWEVER:

ADK has been around since at least the early eighties as a development team within SNK. It was not until the Neo Geo systems were made that they began to be their own company (which was still technically part of SNK, a second party company like Rare to Nintendo, per se). I propose that the ninja in the background IS Hanzou of World Heroes fame because at the time Fatal Fury Special was being made and considering the situation SNK was going through, anything was possible.

Take Fight Fever for example. This was a pathetic game made by Viccom. After it completely flopped SNK hired up the few talented people from within the Korean company which attempted to take on the Street Fighter 2 phenomenom with their Tae Kwon Do based fighting game.

Because of this, a few things from Fight Fever, such as some of the sound effect samples, made it into Fatal Fury 2 and Art of Fighting.

Also, of the Korean people that ended up working for SNK, one of them was at the time the president of Viccom.

His name is Kim Kap Hwan. So you see anything's possible.

These events were before the Capcom~Data East lawsuit. They had happened at the end of an era when you could play a Commando arcade game that had a Data East label on the side, and where almost no one new Tradewest made the game Renegade because they had Taito distribute it for them almost everywhere.

What I'm trying to say is that at that time ANYTHING went. Quite frankly the character looks somewhat like Hanzou and nothing like Eiji Kisaragi. It must be Hanzou from that standpoint.

The only other possibility is that it was from an early design for Hanzo Hattori (since there is a slight similarity) as I have heard that a male ninja character was originally going to be in Fatal Fury 2 (which a character along the lines of Mai Shiranui being a playable character in Samurai Shodown when it came out). As there is absolutely nothing to substantiate this (beyond Mai originally going to be male character) at the moment I will still maintain that the character seen in Mai's background in Fatal Fury 2 is Hanzou of World Heroes fame.

...

Of course, every World Heroes character had a real life counterpart. And Hanzo Hattori was a real life ninja. So in a manner of speaking it is Hanzo Hattori as well depending on how you want to look at it.

I think it is Eiji Kisaragi ,I know he might not have existed when fatal fury special was made, but considering this mystery man is wearing the same clothes as Eiji in art of fighting 2,then its pretty obvious its him, maybe snk who were already working on making art of fighting 2 had a rough outline of what one of the chars would look like and decided to give him a introductory cameo appearence,SNK never makes any sense,I think most of their endings just end without a real end, anyway who cares who it is,it was almost ten years ago now,the games still great though

Here is some of Eiji's ending from Art of Fighting 2. I think he was the male ninja character taken out of Fatal Fury 2 and Special in favor of Mai.

Oh and DSD thanks for the compliment. You into Kung fu? I've been thinking about training with this Shaolin Monk in New York called See Yun Ming. He runs a school called Shaolin Temple USA. Here's a pic of him.

See Yun Ming is a no joke Shaolin Master.

There many Schools here in NY like the Wu Tang School (no not the hip hop group), Tiger masters and many more but Shaolin is the one of the best.

Not Sure what type of Shaolin school See Yun Ming has but i know that its hard being in a Buddist Shaolin Religion School cus its some serious devotion and training (mind, body and spirit training).

On my avenue alone they have 2 Buddist temples were you can see them praying and sometimes training their Shaolin style kung fu (Hun Gar i think).

Hope if you do decide to come to NY thing go great for you and then get ready for some heavy Shaolin training.

Hang on.... How can Eiji be in love with Mai? AOF 2 happens waaaaay before Fatal Fury 1 (Due to a very young Geese being the final boss) So that would make Mai about 4 or 5 years old (If that).......Ewwwwwwwww!

It's a Japanese game, just be glad Eiji Kisaragi fights with knives instead of tentacles.

Yeah, and if you work backwards, Mai is also about 13 in FF2 and has big boobs. Geese falls off a high-rise and "dies" 3 HOURS LATER -please do explain that. And, let's not forget about the Geese-Takuma/Mr.Karate-Jeff-Terry business. Try figuring that one out. SNK = Since Nobody Knows how to think here we'll just make up some shit and pretend it makes sense. And can't Kim be seen flying around the world back in the 1700's (Samurai Shodown II)? It's all good fun.
