What kind of name is "Geese Howard"?

Don't get me wrong, he's my favorite Boss ever, but what kind of name is "Geese Howard"? Is Geese a real name in another language, or did they just feel like giving a cool character a weak name? Anyone?

I've noticed when the announcer says "Billy Kane", it sounds like "Billy Kahn"- most likely due to Japanese pronunciation. The first time I reached this stage and heard this, I went "HUH????".

My guess is that is what happens when someone who barely knows English attempts to make a western style name. Anyone who has seen Trigun knows the results: you get people like Chapel the Evergreen and guys named Ruth.

Can anyone besides Atairguy and Chirman Kaga come close to giving me a real answer as to if Geese is a real name in some other language, or or just the result of someone with poor English skills? We all know Geese is cool. I'm trying to figure out what's up with his name.

A lot of anime characters seem to have an animal for a name, my guess is that in Japanese having an animal name isn't uncommon, so, when needing a western name, they just looked up an animal.
