There's a quote about him that I had saved a while back. Later I'll see if I can find the link to it. But it encapsulates his music very well, imo.

Tom Petty has been a rock star for almost 40 years. He has a dozen or so songs that will be played on classic rock radio for as long as there is classic rock radio. If you’re a music fan of a certain age, there was a time in your life when he seemed inescapable. Even now, Petty is still a guy that most people know, even if you don’t actively care about him one way or the other. Tom Petty’s music doesn’t necessarily demand a value judgment. It’s like having an opinion on tap water or concrete. Why bother? It’s just there, reliable to the point of invisibility. If it went missing, you would notice.

I was very surprised when I heard about Tom's passing; that came out of nowhere. I've enjoyed his stuff all my life and probably my first experience with his music was his weird, but cool, Alice in Wonderland MTV video for "Don't Come Around Here No More":

"Last Dance With Mary Jane" is my absolute favorite song that he ever did:

RIP Mr. Petty, you'll be missed!

Saw him live at the Spectrum in the spring of 1995.

Here is one of my favorite performances of his:

I always was aware of his music, but I'll never forget how inescapable "You Don't Know How It Feels" was for a time in the mid 90s. So many classic songs from this guy, right here. RIP.

That's a rock-solid quote. I won't come out and say that I'm a huge Tom Petty fan...but I can honestly say that I like many of his top songs and have heard them so many times, I can damn near quote them word for word. His music always takes me to a time when I first heard whatever song I'm listening to...which is an amazing feat.

He will be missed...
