It's been brought to my attention that I am a damn fine gamer, and that I should use my wisdom for the greater good of my fellow video gamer. Newbie's to be exact. It is for those fledgling Neo Geo gamers that I have created this topic, so that they can find the tips needed to get that better score, or reach that higher level. While I will reluctantly admit to being one of the better gamers here, I am not however the best there is. I suck at some games too. My strongest area is Fighting Games, which is what I'm going to offer tips to.

First off, let me say that if you don't enjoy fighting games, then you sure picked a hell of a system to invest interest in. Come on now folks, the Neo Geo's cash cow is fighting games, and it's a big cow let me tell ya'. Now for everyone who does dig fighting games, but can't seem to get past the first stage of games like Galaxy Fight, Samurai Shodown II, Art of Fighting 2, I'm going to impart some wisdom to help you.

Lesson 1: Why is it that I can kick so much ass on Street Fighter, but I get trounced horribly on Art of Fighting?

Now that's a good question, one that at I think many of us have asked in our younger days. The answer is that Capcom is general market, and SNK is Hardcore. I can't count how many times little kids at the arcades get mad cause they just lost a quarter to the CPU. If you're playing your copy of Samurai Shodown II like Street Fighter, then that's mostly what you're doing wrong. The AI on most Fighters for the Neo Geo, is a lot more complex then that of a Capcom fighter. You can get through a Capcom fighter fairly easy just relying on one move, not true with SNK. Most SNK fighers will either dodge or block any special moves, and thet certainly never fall for the same move more than 4 times. Capcom AI is designed to take hits and still keep coming, SNK AI are designed to finish you quickly, and will if you let them.

Lesson 2: What should I do to beat the game?

First, stop thinking about beating the game until you're actually at a point where it maters, like the 2nd to last stage. Just worry about getting to the next stage. Second, pay attention to AI at all times (yeah I know it's hard to do when you pick one of the female fighters, what with all the jiggling and stuff), watch his moves. It's important to do this, because eventually you'll know how to put him situations that you can take advantage of. Third, don't try so hard to use special moves, just keep it simple. Rely more on normal punchs and kicks than anything, and if you can sneak in an SM, do it. Fourth, when the AI jumps, or taunts (and believe me, they will) that is your best time to attack. Finaly, always save DM's for when your oppenent has less Life Bar than you do. Yeah, I know they're flashy and fun to watch and are worth more points than SM's, but they also do the most damage.

Lesson 3: The CPU won't let me use my normal moves on anymore, he just keeps blocking them.

If this is happening to you, it just means that you need a change up. If he's blocking your punchs, throw a kick, if he's blocking your kicks, throw a punch. If he's blocking both, either throw him, or jump back a bit and wait for him to come for you.

Lesson 4: The Time Up Victory is your friend.

The Time Up Victory is when the timer run out (Duh!), and the player with most life bar lift at the end wins (Dubble Duh!). Just make sure that the AI is the one with less than yours.

Lesson 5: Last, but not least.

Block, block, block, block, block, block, block. Get used to blocking (and swearing), cause that's what you'll be doing most of the match.

That's about all I can think right now. Guy's, if I missed anything or if you have tips & tricks of your own, please feel free to post it.

Thanks to Matt Simmuel for suggesting that I do this.

That's the best tip in there, and one I have to keep reminding myself of. I am very inconsistent at pulling off a lot of special moves and when I try to do too many I just end up doing terribly.

Like he said. You won't get ANYWHERE unless you block. Most of the fights I've had in KoF95 were more blocking then beating. 95 is tricky like that...

In the Samurai Shodown series, if your opponent loses his weapon, the match is MUCH easier if you can prevent him from regaining his tool of pain.

The Last Blade series. The first thing you should master is the Repel feature. It'll make things a shitload easier.

And above all... PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT. Don't get intimidated, it's a game, and it's meant to be beaten. GO FORTH AND KICK ASS!!!

If your opponent loses his weapon just cover it and stay there for the remainder of the bout - 9 times of of 10 he will be more bothered about getting it back rather than beating you. Big mistake there. shame

When I lose my weapon I don't really care, I don't fall for the 'come and get it' crap. I can do just as well without.

I love SS2 - a true test of patience and calm.

That's a really good tech David, thanks for thinking of something that I've never even thought of.

Now for another tip; in shooting games, the best way to get farther is to always keep your eye on your character, something that's hard to do in games like Metal Slug & Pulstar, in fact, that's even why most game designers spend so much time & effort getting the little details in. Because more distraction means more quarters.
