When the Atari 2600 was out, my dad was a monster in games like Montezuma Revenge, Enduro and others (he'd spend nights playing!).

Then, he played Mario and Super Sprint when we got a NES (he was the one to find the warps in the game... I was 7 at the time, and still learning - Oh yeah, my dad also figured out how to play Super Sprint! I hated the game because I couldn't figure out how to play it, then I loved it after my father taught me. I know it sounds stupid, but as a kid, it was really hard to play it).

When we got a Genesis, he'd play the occasional Golden Axe and Street Fighter SCE, but he kinda started to leave the gaming scene in our family. I don't remember him ever playing any SNES game except for Mario Kart, just like the N64 (MK64).

/OT

Daytona is the only Saturn game my father ever played, and he got good at it! I remember working my ass off in every track, and I couldn't beat his best laps... I have great memories of it. I'm still looking for the DC Daytona, maybe then I can make my dad play something on the DC.

Great list, my friend!

Say... D'you guys think there's any chance of finding an EU KOF ¨95 for the Saturn? I'd really appreciate the english text.

Of course you can find EU KOF 95... probably eBay is your best shot. BTW good stuff on the stories of your dad. I can relate, except replace "dad" with "uncle." My uncle was a pretty avid NES gamer, playing a-many nights with me and my brother on such classics as the Double Dragon games, Contra, Super Mario Brother games, etc.

But soon he started to stop playing games altogether. The last game I remember him playing was Sonic 1 on Genesis. Never forget the time I came home from school only to hear and see him kicking some mean butt on Green Hill Zone.

Tomorrow I'll have the 2 entries up either before or after I watch Roger Clemens take it to Pedro. Til then! :)

#40 and #39

#40: SOVIET STRIKE -90%

The inevitable 32-bit update of EA's established Strike series arrives to much critical acclaim.
"Soviet Strike adheres to the same basic gameplay principles of the previous Strike games, but running on Sega's powerhouse console, everything is done far better. More weapons, FMV clips, photo-realistic landscapes and a greater variety in the missions culminate in an awesome addition to the series." -Lee Nutter

soviet.JPG

#39: JONAH LOMU RUGBY -91%

The only authentic rugby simulation on the Saturn. Codemasters' sporting star recreates the sights, sounds and smells of the big lads' game. It's a bit difficult to find in the shops, but the effort is more than worth it.
"While the world goes football (soccer in the UK) crazy, Codemasters take a stab at one of the world's roughest sports. Actual team stats, spot-on gameplay and bone-crunching matches ensure Jonah's reputation (and tackle) remain intact. A welcome alternative to all those footie games." -Matt Yeo

jonah.JPG

-----

Soviet Strike... haven't played it yet.

Jonah Lomu Rugby looks darn good. Jonah is a winger, and one of the very best in the sport. In fact he has his own website at www.jonahlomu.com
He's 6'4" of solid power and as you can see on the cover scan, won SSM's Game of the Month award in August of '97.

It also came out on PSOne. Go here to read user reviews/praise.

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/games/playstation_games/jonah_lomu_rugby/

I need to get this game. I played rugby once in my life and I can tell you... it's by far the most grueling sport I've ever played. It makes everything else look bush league! The constant running, weaving, turning, dodging and throwing motions really beats on your body. I commend anyone who plays rugby skillfully in real life. It's one hell of a sport. Here's the beginning pulled out of a Jonah Lomu Rugby showcase, held in issue #21... Matt Yeo takes you back... waaaay back...

So there I was, 13 years old, as skinny as a rake, decked out in my brand new PE kit, soaked to the bone and absolutely scared stupid. It was a freezing cold Wednesday afternoon and me and my fellow classmates were lined up on the rain-soaked bog that used to be the school playing fields. If the hypothermia-inducing weather didn't kill us, our fearsome teacher would. Mr. Bunigar was every school kid's worst nightmare -- big, scary and Welsh. Now, whereas previous sport sessions had been taken up with football, athletics and softball, today was our first introduction to that most gentle of sports -- rugby. Giving us the kind of look Lions use when stalking prey, Mr. Bunigar gave us our first, and allegedly, most important rugby lesson: "Fall face down!" he shouted. And with that God-like commandment still ringing in our ears, Class 3C closed their eyes and took the mud bath plunge...
It's a true story and one that still makes me cringe at the very mention of rugby. But rugby is, if anything, one of the most misunderstood sports in the world. Think rugby, think broken noses, cauliflower ears, communal baths and endless songs about miners.
(so I'm NOT alone.... -me)
There's much more to it than that...

I have Lomu on the PSX, it is one of the best games ive ever played, let alone sports or rugby.

Im not sure how well it translated to Saturn as the PSX version uses all the shoulder buttons, but either way it must still be awsome, particularly multiplayer, great comentary too.

#38: MANX TT SUPERBIKE -91%

The stunning Model 2 arcade racer was converted to the Saturn by Australian coders Tantalus, and they did a pretty good job too. But can they match the power of a true AM conversion?
"The one complaint that stops Manx TT from being a bit higher in this listing is the ridiculous number of tracks -- just two. The graphics were the closest a racing game got to Sega Rally standards (at the time), and the racing action played bloody well too. Shame about the number of tracks." -Gary Cutlack

manx.JPG

bomberman4.gif

#37: SATURN BOMBERMAN -90%

The perfect party game. Hudsonsoft's first Sega Bomberman outing offers loads of explosive fun with up to ten players trying to blow the living daylights out of each other. As Barry Norman would say: and why not?
"Bomberman's basically a hit on every system. Excellent long term playability, multiple weapons and battle arenas, multi-tap compatibility and replay value galore. Although Saturn Bomberman is let down by a weak one-player game variation, this is still an essential purchase and a great party game." -Matt Yeo

satbomberman.JPG

-----

We see a return to more familiar roads this time around. Gone with the wind are not-so-much-talked-about titles such as Space Hulk, Soviet Strike, Actua Golf and Jonah Lomu Rugby. Now we start to see some of the "real" big boys emerging from the mist.

Manx TT is nice. And for the $8.25 it cost me back in 2002, it was bang-for-the-buck. There's no denying the quality packed within Manx TT, but had I bought it for 50 bucks on release day, would I have been satisfied with the purchase? Probably not... still, rock-solid, and with its going price these days, there's no excuse to NOT have it in your collection.

manx2.gif

Saturn Bomberman is ACE. I personally would place it a LOT higher than #37. Quite possibly in the top five... if not... numero uno. My only complaint about SB: it only has 8 battle arenas. If it had a stupid amount, like 20, including classic and new ones, man... I would score it 100%

bomberman3.gif

Tomorrow we count down to #36 and #35. The heat is officially NOW ON. Here come the big boys......

#36: CROC LEGEND OF THE GOBBOS -91%

Take on the evil Baron Dante in this multi-level, 3D platformer. Croc is set to be a big star and his first outing is a real hoot!
"Owing a big thanks to Mario 64, Croc's adventures are perfectly pitched at both young and old players alike. Huge stages, tricky platforming action and hilarious bosses await intrepid players. Not an "amazing" Saturn game, but certainly in a league of its own." -Matt Yeo

Croc.JPG

#35: SUPER PUZZLE FIGHTER II TURBO -86%

Miniaturizing their cool Street Fighting characters (and others from DarkStalkers) and sticking them in a puzzle game made Capcom sound like they've gone mad...
"Fortunately Capcom's masterful coding skills ensured that another gameplay classic emerged. Super-cute versions of Ryu, Chun-Li and the gang battle it out for 2D supremacy, and the gem-dropping gameplay makes for one of the best puzzle games this side of Buckaroo and Connect 4." -Gary Cutlack

spft2.JPG

-----

Whew, some long name entries this time round, eh?

I recently got Croc so I can't comment much on it except it's alright, and I suppose, for its time (December '97) there wasn't much like it on Saturn at all, so all things considered, this selection to me is understandable. I still would have placed Saturn Bomberman much much higher.

Puzzle Fighter's one of my favorite games, definitely my #1 puzzle game of choice. Interesting note is that the 86% awarded is the lowest rating you'll find on this Top 50 chart, even lower than #50's selection "Mass Destruction" (87%)... yet it placed 15 slots higher. Goes to show you don't *always* assume higher ratings = higher status.
Another perfect example of this was yesterday's two games. Manx TT at 38 (91%) and Bomberman at 37 (90%)

Yet another example: Dark Savior so far scored the highest (92%) yet it's way back in the 40's. The lowest rated game, PF at 86%, laughs at DS while comfortably situating itself in the mid 30's.

Hmmm. Perhaps there IS life after the big 3-0! :mr_t:

Before we actually begin I'd like to start things off with a mini-rant, random thoughts, or just plain pull tidbits out of SSM. Whatever mood I am in. Today I'll share with you something I found particularly funny in regards to Saturn Bomberman.

"Even if you don't have any friends, you can play the CPU opponents in Battle Mode. But really, you have to experience this game against real human beings. Hey, even if that means inviting a couple homeless people over. Yeah. Sure! Why not? They'll appreciate the warmth of four walls and a roof, they'll appreciate your company, they'll appreciate the goodness of the SEGA Saturn, and you can experience multi-player Bomberman. Everyone's a winner!"

Alright, on with the show!

#34: BAKU BAKU ANIMAL -93%

Not just another Tetris clone, as Sega's cutesy Baku Baku Animal is arguably the finest example of the puzzle game genre.
"I hate this game. Buying it was the single worst mistake I've ever made. Baku Baku has single-handedly ruined my sex life. My girlfriend loves it, more than she loves me if truth be known. Bitch. No, just kidding, honest." -Lee Nutter

Baku.JPG

As editor Rich Leadbetter might caption, "Look, it's Lee Nutter on the cover folks. Actually one of his better shots."

#33: BUST-A-MOVE 3 -91%

Another great puzzle game. Converted from the classic Taito arcade series, this one sees cute cartoon characters shooting colored bubbles all over the place... Intriguing...
"Puzzle games are fun, aren't they? The graphics are always colorful and nice, and most contain simple gameplay that even your mom could understand. Bust-a-Move 3 would be especially popular with your mom because it's great fun, and contains one of the best head-to-head two-player games there is. Cool." -Gary Cutlack

Bam3.JPG

bustmove1.jpg

OK this is a shot from BaM 2 and not 3. Sue me.

---

The last 3 entries we see PUZZLE GAME GALORE! Never played BaM 3 but have played part 2, which is so good I see no reason to get 3... though it's to my understanding 3 has selectable characters and different bubble gimmicks... if anyone would like to comment on "2 vs. 3" go ahead.

Baku Baku is very good, though not appealing to me in the way Puzzle Fighter is. I'd personally have them ranked:

3. BB
2. BaM
1. PF

But either one of them is pretty ace, no? I know another thing, girls just love playing these games. Last last summer when my female cousins (from Texas and Canada) were sleeping over, they fell head over heels for Puzzle Fighter and BaM 2 I couldn't stop them from playing. It got to the point where one bloody morning I woke up at 7 sharp to the cues of "HAAAAAAAAA-DO-KEN!" and "Gomen Ne?"

bustmove2.jpg

2 again, not 3... so ha!

Puzzle games are just so easy to love... what with its simplicity, fun and endless lastablility that laughs in the face of any Joe Average game.
And Saturn is certainly home to a few gems, including, to name a few, Magical Drop III, Puyo Puyo Sun, Columns Collection and Tetris S (S, not Plus. Big diff tween the two... i.e. one's worth owning and one's worth chucking, respectively)

bustmove3.jpg

Do ya feel lucky, punk? Huh, do ya?

Tomorrow we examine no. 32 and 31. What could they be... and will their ratings surpass the new watermark of 93% held by BaM 3, dethroning Dark Savior's 92%? Come back and see, fun for all, a game within a game! ;)

I L O V E Puzzle fighter
BUT
Because i'm color blind I can't make heads or tails of the green/red gems, so when it comes to using them i'm screwed. I even messed up my color settings to be able to enjoy this game...no luck

Ahhh, Elevator Action Returns. An ace game. Simple, fun, and undeniably cool. A must-own for diehard Saturn fans. Don't let the rather simple graphics fool ya... it's just a lovely game you'll enjoy coming back to again and again. Trust me on this one. It's just a shame it goes for some odd sixty-plus dollars these days. Blasphemy that. Got mine for 45 flat and it was worth every last cent. SSM scored EAR a very respectable 87%... I love it whenever you crush someone under an elevator and their blood seeps underneath... heh-heh...

elevatoractionr4.jpg

Alright, on with the show you monkey eh? Damn ungrateful blokes, you. ;)

#32: FIGHTING VIPERS -94%

Tossing aside the realism of VF2, Sega's pseudo-sequel takes a more fantastical approach to the beat 'em up genre.
"Adding weapons, barriers and armor to the established VF formula, AM2's incredible Fighting Vipers conversion is a speedier and more brutal beat 'em up than the more graceful VF series. Add to this the fact that as a conversion it's virtually indistinguishable from the arcade, and we're left with yet another top Saturn beat 'em up. Ooh and you can watch AM2 play it too!" -Lee Nutter

fvipers.JPG

#31: SEGA AGES -91%

AM2's arcade classics of the eighties: Space Harrier, Afterburner II and OutRun are gathered in one outstanding retro compilation.
"Sega's graphics technology, coupled with AM2's gameplay prowess, have led the arcade field for over a decade. These games (although aged) are still great fun -- and OutRun in particular still ranks as one of the greats of the racing genre." -Editor Rich Leadbetter

segaages.JPG

---

Never played FV... I have Fighters Megamix and think that's all the FV action I could use. I'm not a big fan of the FV fighters but... I can see why others may have enjoyed them. As far as I know it, FV was a pivotal release for its time, and got some mighty hype...

Sega Ages, I don't actually own this but I do own the JPN import stand-alone versions of Space Harrier and OutRun. I like the latter more than the former, but they're both pretty good. It's nice to see they have that "pick-up-and-play" factor that many games today do not. Just press start and you're ready to have a blast.

sages1.gif

And who could forget that Splash Wave tune from OutRun? Or the great many winding roads? The atmospheric orange-yellow skies in the distance? The blonde chick sitting by your side? Hmm?

sages2.gif

Or how about some of Space Harrier's more notable baddies... ones which, have literally burnt their images into a-many gamers' retinas?

sages3.gif

Tomorrow we say good bye to the 30's and begin our march in to the wonderful 20's...

Ah, almost that time of the year again kids! Where the days grow short and the nights grow long. And there are few games more suited for Halloween than this such creation, HOUSE of the DEAD. Now, the Saturn version surely is a bit of a disappointment (a major dis, for some of you I'm sure) but it's still fun to play. After all, you still get to pump led into zombies and give them gaping holes in their chest area and head regions.
The US version sells for a ridiculous amount. The import version at about 12-25 dollars is a much better purchase, and they're virtually identical from what I know.

Saturn HotD goes down as a disappointment for many, with its low-res visuals and whatnot, but still remains a trick-or-treat thrill with 2 light guns John Woo-style on any dark stormy night....

hotd2.gif

On with the festivities....

#30: BUBBLE BOBBLE FEATURING RAINBOW ISLANDS -92%

Two epoch-making Taito platform games arrive on Saturn. The graphics might be crap, but the gameplay is golden.
"Bubble Bobble's cool, but the real star of the show is Rainbow Islands. It might not be quite arcade perfect, but the depth of this game is astounding (there's more to it than Mario 64). Couple that with perfect gameplay and I can't recommend it enough." -Editor Rich Leadbetter

Bubbob.JPG

#29: LAST BRONX -92%

Big men, little girls, bulging weapons -- sounds like a dodgy porn flick. But it isn't, it's the awesome Last Bronx.
"The highly anticipated conversion of AM3's first fighting foray certainly doesn't disappoint. Excellent hi-res visuals, 60 fps update and unequivocally violent gameplay culminates in one of the best 3D beat 'em ups to grace the Saturn to date." -Lee Nutter

lastbronx.jpg

---

Bubble Bobble Featuring RI... Rich took the words out of my mouth. Though I'm not too sure about the Mario 64 comment, which is debatable. Perhaps you'd like to tackle Rich's comment.

I'm a bit of a Last Bronx fan. Cool describes it well. Not to mention violent and senseless. Kurosawa is one of the coolest fighters of all time IMO (he's the badass in purple). And that Nagi Hojo? She's the first video game Lesbian fighter that we know of. That has to count for something, right? You damn right it does.
Yeah, it can get a little glitchy (especially in certain win poses) but it's a fun diversion of a game nonetheless. I like how everyone's storyline is jointed together. The subtitles in the US version is also a nice touch.

28 and 27 tomorrow. If not, that means the Magician got me...

One of the more overlooked US Saturn games is HERC's ADVENTURES. From the makers that brought you Zombies Ate My Neighbors, comes this ZAMN-esque game set in Ancient Greece.

hercs3.jpg

Set in over 40 unique worlds and featuring a co-op 2 player mode, Herc's Adventures is a good time out. A breath of fresh air... good old school 2D overhead action.

hercs4.jpg

give it a shot!

#28: WIPEOUT 2097 -92%

A speedy racing game that was one of the few reasons to buy a PlayStation... until it was converted (rather well too) to the Saturn!
"Cool futuristic racing, with eight tracks to race around. The hover-cars handle really well, and the extra-colorful courses all look fantastic in this Saturn conversion. Some of the special effects from the PlayStation version are missing, but who cares? It plays brilliantly and that's what counts." -Gary Cutlack

wipeout2097.JPG

#27: JOHN MADDEN NFL '98 -92%

It was compulsory for every MegaDrive owner to have at least one Madden game, and the legendary US football series continued on the Saturn -- just about the only EA sports title to continue the quality in the move to 32-bit...
"And it continued with style. One of the best multi-player games that consenting adults can enjoy, this '98 update is faster, smoother and tougher than ever before. This year's players and stats, and the ability to build your own team from scratch make Madden '98 the best yet." -Gary Cutlack

madden98.JPG

wo20972.gif

Wipeout 2097... I never understood why it didn't receive a US release. Ah well. It's AKA WipEout XL in the JPN market. It's still one I need to get...

wo20973.gif

Madden '98... I admit I'm not a big football fan. I got this game as part of a bigger package and one day I finally sat down with it and whadaya know -- I had a blast. I used one of the legends team and "Sweetness" Walter Payton ripped it up for me. I don't play a lot of football games but I find Madden 98 very playable and enjoyable.

26 and 25 tomorrow.

An omission from SSM's Top 50 (83% by the way), this is one top game. Sure it's been updated and enhanced on other formats over the years but to me the original Worms is still plenty ace. It has given me and my brother in particular, countless cut-throat battles, and I believe it's one of the best 2 (or more) player games available on Saturn, easily.

I still remember the auction I won of it. It ended on 4th of July 2001 at 9 PM, I had plans that night for a firework show with my friends and I bidded right before I left. I swore I thought I'd be outbidded but it never happened... :-)

worms1.jpg

#26: STEEP SLOPE SLIDERS -92%

The first Saturn snowboarding game to hit the UK and it's a blast! 17 characters, six challenging courses and hundreds of cool tricks.
"Board stupid? You won't be with Steep Slope Sliders, an amazing game that faithfully recreates the world's most popular winter sport with incredible detail and much playability. Play the game as a straight forward racer and beat the clock or pull off blazing stunts to rack up massive scores. If you've never been snowboarding before, Steep Slope Sliders is the perfect downhill trainer." -Matt Yeo

sss.JPG

#25: WARCRAFT II THE DARK SAGA -91%

Electronic Arts attempt to grab a slice of the lucrative Command and Conquer action more than makes up for the absence of Red Alert.
"Taking a medieval slant on the strategy based C&C formula, EA's Warcraft II plays virtually identically to Westwood Studios classic. It may look complex but it's very easy to pick up. With over 52 huge missions to complete and the Beyond the Portal expansion pack toss in for good measure, this is awesome stuff and well up there with C&C. What we like to call 'a victory of gameplay over graphics.' Well worth a look." -Lee Nutter

warcraft2.JPG

steep2.jpg

I owned SSS at one point but didn't get into it as I'd have liked, so traded it off. One day I'd like to re-acquire it and give it another shot. I guess I expected TOO much out of it...

steep4.jpg

The following comes from the legendary Gary Cutlack...

"Many years ago, I went on a school skiing trip to Austria. It all went very well until, on the sixth day, I had a small accident and broke one of my skis. Initially, I was quite upset at being left out of the skiing fun that my friends were all enjoying, but then I had a brainwave -- what if I put both of my feet on my one remaining ski and 'surf' down the slope? It seemed to work, and was bloody good fun too. The rest of my class started doing it as well, and by the end of the week the entire town was copying my idea. Little did I know that I had just invented the sport of 'snowboarding' and this activity would become one of the biggest trends in the 1990s! Funny how things work out, isn't it?"

I have yet played Saturn Warcraft II but have played the PC version. It was one of the PC games that I can count on one hand which my brother went out and bought. So was its popularity and and success. I recall a-many nights just hearing the orcs grunt on our computer screen while I was watching TV or doing homework in the living room... brings back good memories.

Steep Slope Sliders was the first full price new game i got on Saturn, and started my conquest to keep the pal market alive. It is awsome, i dont play it these days, but the secret charcaters were whey cool, and the soundtack awsome. The same guys programmed the obscure Playstation version "tricky sliders", published by Capcom, which is also good, but not as good as SSS.

As for HOTD, the gfx were a major let down, in similar fashion to the gfx let down of Touring Cars, but unlike the later conversion, HOTD WAS the arcade game in playability terms, v.good.

Ahh, Galactic Attack. AKA Layer Section. One of the first Saturn games I bought, and still a great one to play. I remember the night I got it too. Was on my way to my cousins' house for a little Saturday night lounging when I decided to swerve on over to FuncoLand right nearby. Saw it disc only for 4.99 and pounced on that motherf*cker. I was just getting into Saturn at that point and remembered EGM ranking it #86 in their top 100 games list in issue 100 (Nov. 97)

Not only did it help to reinforce my passion for Saturn but also the shmup genre.

An interesting rather glaring omission from SSM's top 50 IMO. Generally, I've found SSM's review scores to be pretty much flat-on, but I completely disagree with Layer Section's 72%... hmmm, maybe the PAL version was lacking in the translation, who knows...

At any rate, a great shoot em up in my estimation and damn tough too. An essential purchase.

layersect2.gif

#24: SONIC JAM -92%

Dubbed as the "ultimate retro pack" in issue #22 of SSM, Sonic Jam shows off the Sonic Team at their very best.
"The MegaDrive Sonic series was the main reason that many people (myself included) first got into games. Putting all four games on one disc was a masterstroke for the Sonic Team, and with the mind-blowing Sonic World -- this is an essential slice of the retro cake." -Lee Nutter

sonicjam4.jpg

sonicjam.JPG

#23: X-MEN CHILDREN OF THE ATOM -92%

Cyclops, Wolverine, Juggernaut and pals battle it out in one of the most outrageous 2D fighting games ever conceived.
"Before X-Men: COTA no one knew the potential of Saturn's 2D capabilities. X-Men showed the world that no machine can match the Saturn (sans Neo Geo of course). When COTA appeared, work at EMAP stopped completely and many happy hours were spent pummelling CVG's Tom Guise (and others) into pulp as he squealed like a stinking pig... but I digress..." -Editor Rich Leadbetter

xmen.JPG

---

sonicjam3.jpg

Pretty big fan of Sonic Jam. I liked COTA just fine. But to me the highlight of these two is definitely Sonic Jam. It really was a shame a 3D Sonic in the form of Sonic World never came out... I know it's been said a bajillion times before but... man, if such a game was released in '95... who knows what would have happened in the "32-bit War"...

sonicjam2.jpg

... a lot coulda changed had this Sonic-caliber game come out in full form early on in Saturn's life ...

Hey, how did these two bastards sneak in huh? ;)

WHP was the main reason I bought a Saturn in '99 to begin with. (Actually, half the reason why. The other half -- tune in tomorrow to find out) And what a great port it is too. 2 second loading times, art gallery for all four WH games, and playable bosses right from the get-go. 1st import for me ever. Still recall the first time I set it up. I was shaking with enthusiasm...

Fighter's History Dynamite was the 2nd Saturn game I bought. It came delivered to my door on 4th of July of 1999. For a long time (18 months) they were the only two Saturn games I had and played... til 2001 rolled in... but yeah, I'll never forget the feeling of buying my first import, and playing it for the first time. It being one of my childhood favorites didn't hurt either.
Cool shit indeed.

#22: DAYTONA USA -92%

The first conversion of AM2's classic coin-op and arguably one of the finest racers on the Saturn.
"Yeah, the graphics are looking a bit crap now and the PAL conversion is quite poor. But the fact remains that AM2's Daytona conversion sounds, feels and plays just like the coin-op, not something we could say about the more recent conversion." -Lee Nutter

#21: GUARDIAN HEROES -93%

Platform kings Treasure combine classic RPG elements with some hard-hitting, side-scrolling beat 'em up action. Explore mystical lands inhabited by fair maidens and bizarre monsters.
"Only rivalling Capcom in terms of 2D mastery, Treasure's epic adventure is an innovative and challenging game. The fact that Guardian Heroes manages to breathe new life into the stale scrolling beat 'em up genre can't be a bad thing either. A truly ace game." -Matt Yeo

Daytona USA -- I have like 3 copies of this lying around somewhere. Who doesn't? ;)
The horse code is pretty cool.

As for GH, a very strange game indeed. By that I mean you'll always have on one hand the diehard GH supporters, and on the other hand, you'll always have your GH rippers, doubters and shouters. I fall somewhere inbetween the two warring factions...

You know I am a huge Fighting Vipers fan. I can not figure what I love about the 2 games but I find them so fun. I prefer Fighting Vipers to....... gasp........ Virtual Fighters. Maybe I like it because it was meant to be fun and not so intense as Virtual Fighters. For whatever the reason it is on my top 5 3d Fighters list.

What version of Herc's Adventure was the best? PSX or SS?

People tend to say PSX version is better due to a better color palette but either one is fine, really.

Well, the other half why I got into Saturn in the 1st place was my brother's desire to own and play FIRE PRO WRESTLING 6 MEN SCRAMBLE. In 1998 he was a major wrestling freak and all his wrestling friends were raving about some obscure (to the US at least) JPN Saturn game. My bro went to me and told me to go find a Saturn... I did some research... and damn.
The rest is history.
It's kinda funny though... coz once I finally bought a Saturn, Fire Pro G was coming out on PSX, so my bro bought that instead.

I didn't buy FPW 6M until much later in my Saturn career. One day I bought it off respected n-g member Mike. It's a great
game. BTW I hope Mike was able to kick that smoking habit he wanted to kick so badly... don't hear from the bloke any more these days... hope he's alright...

One last note before we count to 20 and 19... today marks the 1 year anniversary that I got and played at long last, RADIANT SILVERGUN.
I got it off a saint for 65 shipped. Can you believe that low price?
I'm gonna go play it right now to celebrate and commemorate!
Much more on RS later when we get to the 10's and under... but now, without further ado I present to you...

#20: NIGHT WARRIORS -93%

A classic 2D beat 'em up featuring a gaggle of truly gruesome creatures. Capcom's creature feature is also the first sequel to the demonic DarkStalkers.
"What other game lets you beat the crap out of vampires, a werewolf and even Frankenstein's monster? Amazing cartoon animation, completely over-the-top moves and Capcom's
trademark quality gameplay make this a must-have title. Unique
amongst beat 'em ups." -Lee Nutter

#19: QUAKE -93%

The impossible has been made real with Lobotomy's translation of id software's graphically amazing PC shooting game.
"Quake on PC is my all-time favorite video game. There may be no DeathMatch (so Tom Guise AKA TipDrinker gets off lightly this time) but Lobotomy's tweaks to the single-player game have made it a highly entertaining, challenging experience. And
graphically speaking, this translation is untouchable." -Editor Rich Leadbetter

Night Warriors was one of the first games I ever won off eBay. It came on Valentines Day of 2001 I recall. Great game... and even as cool as it is, Vampire Savior steps it up one more notch.

vampiresavior2.jpg

BTW, for those curious, SSM did do an 8 page showcase on Vampire Savior and the review score for VS was 94%. In SSM's later life, when PAL releases were drying up to nada, they started
doing a lot more coverage on JPN imports. Savior was one such beneficiary. (it even graced the cover, in fact)
SSM did a *ton* to promote Saturn owners to import to get the very best out of the Saturn. They were like... high-quality gaming crusaders.

vampiresavior3.jpg

Quake -- what an awesome programming job by those wizards at Lobotomy. This is a minor miracle folks, and shouldn't have been feasible, yet here it is. Of course, the graphics today don't look
much, but the spirit of Quake is there, is it not? Absolutely amazing that Lobotomy pulled off such a translation.
I mean, Quake on Saturn of this quality should NOT have happened. But I guess no one told Lobotomy that... what a
technical marvel. Mad props!
As for the 1 player game, I still dig it very much. Who can forget the first time they see that SHAMBLER charging at them?

Not me... not me...

When people ask what's the best Saturn shooter, Radiant Silvergun is often the answer. RSG is, quite frankly, in a class of its own. It's really hard to compare RSG with other Saturn shooters. But of "the others," there's one that springs to mind as top-notch. Soukyugurentai!

sat_souky_screenshot02.jpg

Souky-what? Just know this: it's a very good shooter with an uncanny dark steely atmosphere. It's you against the world, nay, a fucking empire! An evil regime... and the mission is one that almost feels desperate.

sat_souky_screenshot03.jpg

Raizing really did a great job w/ Souky. We can say the same for Battle Garegga. So while RSG remains a great experience, Souky on the other hand remains a great blast-a-thon for the more reasonable price.

#18: SHINING THE HOLY ARK -93%

It's a new Shining game on the Saturn from Team Sonic. It's 3D and it's quality. Enough said.
"I didn't want to review this because it started out so dull. Regardless I battled through the early stages and discovered what ranks as one of the single most compelling RPGs I've ever played. I've happy memories of this title -- I love it loads and can't wait for Shining Force III." -Editor Rich Leadbetter

#17: SONIC R -93%

Designed by the legendary Sonic Team and programmed by British developer Travellers Tales, the first Sonic title to be programmed specifically for the Saturn is a joy to behold.
"Clearly the focal point of Sonic R is the mind-blowing graphics, with some jaw-dropping visuals and special effects rivalling those of Mario Kart 64. But rather than just being a graphical showcase for the Saturn, Sonic R is an awesome game to play. There's a massive exploration element to it, secret routes to discover, hidden items to find and ... well, let's just say that this is fine Saturn gaming." -Lee Nutter

StHA... yet to play. Lotta mixed opinions on this one over the years I've read though...

sonicr2.jpg

Sonic R... got this from Master Terry Bogard... thanks bro! Pretty 'spiffy' game if you will. Yeah, the visuals are mind-blowing considering the machine it's running on. Some of the magic effects are unreal. I have yet to really explore the game though, and is something in the future I look forward to doing. If only it was a bigger game -- more courses, more characters... more more more.

An interesting note. If you ever look at Sonic R's "special thanks" end credits you'll see the name Rich Leadbetter. SSM definitely gave Sonic R some massive "page time."
