I can't believe how 'in love' I was with this game before its release to find out it was crap. But u guys notice this is the "asia" version, as opposed to the $39.99 Japanese version? Could they be... different?

They are exactly the same game. The difference is that the box will have English text. English instructions may also be present. Asian games are region 3, whereas Japanese ones are region 2.
