Hi,
I got a defective SamSho II cart (MVS) from xsq (thanks again).
The sound is crackling.
Here are some details :
- Intro sound (NEO GEO logo) plays fine
- All the music is distorted either in game or using the jukebox option in the UniBIOS
- All traces from/to the PCM chip, V1/V2/V3/V4 ROMs and the LS139 on the PROG board are fine
- Boards look really nice (no rust, no damaged areas, no scratches, etc.)

Could it be a bad ROM?

make sure the pcb doesn't have a crack in it somewhere around the contacts.

Could be your board that you are playing on, could be a bad connection. Hard to say for sure. Sometimes the carts aren't always the things at fault.

This is a good place to start. Had a RBFFS that had crackling, distorted audio and it was a fine gouge/scratch right near the contacts.

If there is screeching and modem sounds then it's the PCM itself. If just crackling, bad rom.

If it's the shiny toshiba chips, look at the center of the rom, if you see a square outline like an eprom window then it's most likely bad.

Will do a video tonight.

Nope. The boards are in very good condition and I've tested all connections from the PCM chip to the contacts.

No, xsq had the issue previously and I tested it on 2 different slots.

Humm... Not really screeching or modem sounds.
I've noticed only low octaves have issues.

Yes Toshiba chips. Will have a close look.

Thanks for the link. However my game doesn't sound the same.

Swap the chips to another PROGTOP or a PROGBK1. It can only be the board or a V chip.

If you want to swap out the PCM that's fine but probably more easier to just swap the chips to a different PRG board just in case it's not the PCM.
BB
What about the PCM chip? Or you consider this is part of the board?

Is that after you moved the roms over or what it used to sound like? Make sure if you are planning on swapping that you verify the V roms.
This is the actual sound of the board, I didn't swap the ROMs yet.
If I remove them what should I choose on my programmer in order to be able to dump them?
27C160? 27C322?

Thanks a lot.
I've downloaded the ROM of SamSho II just to compare the size of the V files and came to the same conclusion.
So V1/V2/V3 are identical to the downloaded ROM however V4 is impossible to dump (loose pin error on the programmer although I unsoldered it very cleanly).
So we may have a winner!

[EDIT] I don't have 27C800 can I burn V4 in a 27C160 and install it without modification?

Just double it (the v4) and burn to a 160
/b v4filename + v4filename (new filename v4x2)
