This is a great topic. Sad moments in a movie somehow make it very memorable. The following will be SPOILERS to any who haven't seen them yet. If you are one of these people, I highly recommend these movies (but don't read what I have to say )Here are some of the memorable moments that made me teary:
AKIRA - Towards the end after Tetsuo is in the beyond with Akira. Kaneda is shown the experiences and feelings of Tetsuo when he's abandoned at the orphanage. "Is that how it was like, Tetsuo?" Then it shows some moments of joy in Tetsuo's life like when he first started to learn how to ride a motorcycle. These all culminate into one of the most touching scenes I've ever seen in any movie - Tetsuo's spirit (?) gently floats down and Kaneda embraces it with both hands, head solemnly down with closed eyes and saying "Tetsuo". I always cry at this part. That is why I think Akira is the best animated movie made, along with the most detailed hand drawn animation.
Cadence - A movie with Charlie and Martin Sheen. I suggest everyone see this film. The following will be a SPOILER just to WARN you people. The sad scene in this movie is when Charlie's character, Private Bean, is ready to go to Vietnam, and wants to say bye to the stockade crew (who are all african american). They are still angry at Bean's testimony and continue to give him the silent treatment. But as they do their traditional march one of the guys runs to him and hands him his father's gold lighter. "Watch yourself out there, and don't take nothin from nobody." And he runs back to the line. Then they all turn and do one last march for Bean. Very touching moment and also made me tear.
Shine - The pianist David Helfgott (played by Geoffrey Rush) finishes with his first public performance since his injury and receives a standing ovation. He stands up feeling accomplished and happy but then realizes the warmth and genuine cheer of the crowd and cries with All his heart - the best ever in a movie. And something about people crying that makes me want to cry. I never go without a tear after seeing this part.
Dances with Wolves - One of my favorite movies of all. In the end when Jumani Tutanka Obwachi (Kevin Costner) has to leave the Indian camp for good... Wind in His Hair, a previously strong and emotionless warrior (an Iori if you will ), stand at the top of the hill and shouts with tears in his eyes "I am Wind in His Hair. Dances with Wolves is my friend."
Many other movies I've enjoyed that made me tear, but can't think of right now. I hope you guys have seen these movies I'm talking about and if not will go see it in the future. You will not be disappointed, I promise. I have to watch Graveyard of the Fireflies and have been meaning to in a long time. This summer is the best time as any.
