Ok, let's get out of the negativity mode for a bit... yeah, it must be said, but let's get some positive discussion going, also. Let's not let the duo monopolize all of our posting.

Question:

How is ROTD? I'm seriously considering pre-ordering this, only problem.... how the hell is it? Anyone have any opinions of it? Should I purchase it?

Keep in mind... I HATE '98 (sacreligous.. I know) but I do like 2000 and SF3:3S. So, open to your advice.

Sorry I dont have any info on ROTD, but I did like 98, and 2001. 2000 was pretty cool though. Better than 99.

Also, I think 3rd Strike might be one of the best fighters ever designed.

Vanilla Thunder, I just got home from my local arcade (it had "Rage of the Dragons") and I'll be honest with you: IT SUCKS!

YES, I played the game (quite extensively might I add) and was very disappointed with it. <img src="graemlins/shame.gif" border="0" alt="[Shame]" />

WHY?

Okay, here's my mini-review:

PROS:

Music. It has a Heavy Metal/Industrial-type of soundtrack, so it satisfies your need for new tunes and pumping tracks.

Control. The moves are tight and responsive, but that's also where the game fails...

CONS:

Gameplay. THIS GAME IS _SLOW_!!! THERE IS SO~O MUCH LAG AND RECOVERY TIME FROM SPECIAL MOVES AND SUPERS (whether blocked or not) THAT YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF _VERY_ FRUSTRATED WITH PLAYING! (But the speed of the game is fast enough to keep you playing)

This game has _OLD SCHOOL_ written all over it! It's as if Evoga took as step back to Street Fighter II or KOF '94 in terms of gameplay because ROTD sure as hell plays like your back in 1993-94. <img src="graemlins/spock.gif" border="0" alt="[Spock]" />

Grapics. Think of Street Fighter Alpha (i.e the cartoony/anime-ish look). That itself is not bad, but a lot of the characters are poorly animated...ESPECIALLY THE FEMALE CHARACTERS (Cassandra, Sonia, Alice, and poor Pupa)!!! <img src="graemlins/eek2.gif" border="0" alt="[Eek 2]" /> <img src="graemlins/blowtop.gif" border="0" alt="[Blow Top]" />

Playability. You will get really pissed because the CPU is so cheap! It will bust out those 10-hit string combos in a heartbeat and whack you with supers while your stuck trying to figure out a way around the huge amount of lag that all your special moves have!

Don't get me wrong, I know this is Evoga's first attempt at a fighting game, but they could have at least looked at MOTW or SF to see how fluid and smoothly the game flows instead of literally taking special moves from KOF (Oniyaki? Crack Shoot? Burn Knuckle I say!) and slowing the game down with lag!

Engrish. There's a big amount of it, but you'll be so pissed from playing that you'll hate it moreso than laugh at it!

Honestly though, play the game BEFORE you buy it because, in all likelyhood, you will be disappointed with it just like I was when I played it for the first time...

I consider myself a competitent and international type of gamer willing to experience new things, but I just didn't like ROTD; NOT because I had high exectations for it, but because it's like taking a step in the past...and for current fighting game enthusiasts, that's NOT a good thing.

Evoga has shown no sign of technological development with its fighting engine, and that's a shame because ROTD is a very average fighting game that has little to offer the veteran players out there...

It could have been SO~ much more, but it's a first generation title that takes LOTS of patience and practice to be good at.

Hope that helps!

Wow, this is one of the first times I have not seen a glowing review of the game. But there is one thing I am curious of, and that is if you like tag fighters like SFvsXMEN and MvC. Because with the lag and insane combos that is what it kinda seems like. Oh course I could be completely wrong.

I don't have time at this moment to find the thread, but someone gave it a big review in another topic. I have heard only great things til this thread. I also saw videos and they looked sweeet. I am really looking forward to this game. Look around for the review and maybe I'll come on later and find it for you. (Got to go to work now, but I'm trying to bump up the relevant Neo-Geo topics instead of having 20 NGF topics up top)

I've just played the game at another arcade that was closer to me (luckily I went when it was opening so I could have ROTD all to myself!) and I'll give you my second opinion:

THIS GAME IS STRICTLY OLD SCHOOL! <img src="graemlins/smirk.gif" border="0" alt="[Smirk]" />

That is a GOOD thing if you're true-to-life Street Fighter or KOF players, but if you've gone the way of VF or Tekken, you'll hate this game because it's slow and lacks technical depth.

Rage of the Dragons is a good fighting game; it would have easily crushed Street Fighter II if it had came out earlier; but Noise Factory waited until now to bring it out and a lot of current fighting game enthusiasts will not like it for very long. <img src="graemlins/ohno.gif" border="0" alt="[Oh No]" />

This game can best be described as a mix between KOF 94 and Street Fighter 2 (sorry I keep bringing those two titles up, but it's the closest thing I can think of at the moment) with some VS. series thrown in for added appeal.

Fighting game veterans will feel right at home within the first 10 minutes of playing, but will soon lose interest unless they have someone to play against! This game is TWO-PLAYER FRIENDLY!!!

I don't mean to bash the game, but I had my expectations a bit too high for ROTD and was disappointed, but I gave it a chance and I like it!

It will grow on you, but it takes a lot of time...

Hope that helps!

I have not played it yet. But being as though its Double Dragon I just had to buy it. My reserve went down a while ago and this is my first expensive Neo purchas, so hopfully I wont be dissapointed. From what it sounds like I wont be though. I love the old school fighters compaired to all the new ones.

Well this is good!! IMO the game plays awesome and it has a different feel than KOF and other fighters you can't be comparing with other fighters because is nothing like them.

I think this game has some pretty good original character designs, especially the girls. However GGX still is the best as far as character design is concerned.

I've played this a few times and it reminds me of SNK vs Capcom (it's actually just the type of game you'd expect Capcom to release) or the earlier KOF's.

Any competent fighter will have no trouble picking the combo's up but it knowing when to use them (I find myself expecting to miss or have my Super combo's blocked half the time) so you don't get whacked back.

I think the release price is around £250 in England so about half the price of MOTW but more expensive than the better KOF games.

I may buy it to have in my collection but I see myself going back to my favored fighting titles sooner rather that later.
