Do you people think that the dudes at SNK were kind of racist?

Think about it, every character is either white or asian.

It is rare to find any other different race character on their games.

Yeah, yeah, the soccer games have lots of worldwide teams, but you know what I mean, I am talking about actual characters, not sideshows.

Hmmmm.... good point.... the only Black guys in KOF upto 98, were Heavy D! and Lucky, and many consider them to be jokeyish characters.... and then you've got Duck King, who kinda speaks for himself

I always wondered the same thing about the soccer games. I figured the programmers were just lazy and just changed the skin tones (like in the all-asian Neo Cup '98). They did do a reasonable job on Streep Hoop(Hoop Dreams). I think they were sort of teetering on the edge of stage one in Metal Slug 2, but that game handled ethnic sterotypes as smooth as Disney.
I'm now thinking of Seth and Ramon from KOF2k (well, maybe not Ramon -I laugh every time I hear him exclaim: "Viva Mejico!" because it sounds more like "viya mehco!")

Hey:

Why does not having black characters on your games qualify as being "racist"?!? Japan is a country with a VERY low black population, and so the only black people that SNK's developers probably knew about were the goofy black guys on U.S. TV and movies, i.e. Huggy Bear.

To say that SNK was somehow "racist" is ridiculous. Ignorant maybe, but oh well. And if you don't come up with black characters on your games, so what? I don't think its a big deal.

I always felt Kof99 was extremly racist.

Look at the background of the Chinese Restaurant.
In the shadows. Its of a chinese man hunting up dinner to serve at a Chinese place.

Now that just smacked all my friends as racist.

But how about Seth in kof 2000.

I think he is really cool guy with lots of deadly combos.

Also he is not a streotypical character like Heavy D or Lucky.
And he is one of the strongest strikers in the game...

You know, I thought of that "racist" idea a long time ago. It had me thinking. Yeah, Duck King speaks for himself.

Don't forget about Michael Max.

SNK should of had more black guys and whatnot. Especially like for example, World Heroes. That's perfect. They're based on legendary figures in our history.

There should of been a Malcolm X guy..... JMO. I'd called him "Xavier M".....

Well, if you think about it, Capcom is almost the same way. It wans't until SF3 that black people (forgive me for not being PC) were looking too good, either. I mean, Dahlsim and Mike Bison sort of... well, sucked. Now Elena and Dudly, on the other hand, are really kick ass. Also, Sean is pretty cool for a shoto, I guess.

If you want to see racism, check out Magic Dunker on .... oh hell, I can't remember the name of the game now. Oh well!

Spike...

Dhalsim is SO FAR from black...

Indian people are not black... they're asian (hey, it's on the continent).

Capcom could be the same way. M.Bison looks pretty crappy, and i also noticed that DeeJay is just horribly ripped from SSF2X, and sharpened a little. no effort was made to do away with that super stereotype black guy face.

what's with him putting his hands down his pants when he wins? what the hell is that?

what ever you believe...
at least SNK isnt sexist.
a friend commented to me about how
the ratio was always at least 1/3
to the guys in almost all their games..
now thats pretty good considering that
these are mostly fighting games we are talking
about...
i mean pick a game.. any one.. chances are
there are quite a few girls to be accounted for..

I would think it safe to say that the majority of the characters are japanese, which is the country of orgin the games are made. I think People can see racism in somethings even when it is not even there.

And talking about Gross characters what about earthquake, and Chin or should we even get into the savage reign characters.

As far as other racist are we forgeting Robert garcia son of a multi Millionaire or Mickey rogers. Not to mention some of the characters alternate color are black like sieger and Genjuro.

I think the games are fairly balanced given the country of orgin they are developed in and do not fell they are racist.

Hey Steve:

Its funny that you mention World Heroes, especially considering that there is a Nazi on those games (Brocken).

Malcom X vs. Brocken...good times!

hmmm if you are gonna make this argument, you cannot only isolate SNK. Basically every other game company only uses white and asian males in their games. I think I'll have to agree with one of the posts earlier which said that Japan foreign population is tiny (less than 1%) any many of them have never met a black person. Speaking of which, why are we only saying black people. How many native americans or latinos are you seeing in games?

It seems racisim can be found in anything. Not having enough of "X" race is taken as racist, and having too much of of "X" race is taken as stereotype. Therefore, racist.

Personally, I think SNK does a great job at including different ethnic backgrounds. Even in the rediculous, like Metal Slug, which blowes everything WAY out of proportion. I think they do fine. So, no SNK is not being racist. If they had a game where you play a white cop in "The hood", and ALL the bad guys are black, then we have a problem!

Yeah, but most women you see in games have oversized brests and tight asses. Just look at Lara Croft, the girls from DOA, and Mai. Hell, Mai has larger brests in the Japanese version than in the US in KOF and FF

Racism, implied or intended, have been part of gaming since the God knows when. Japan is a very ethnocentric country. Racial stereotypes are for the most part, acceptable there. It is a known fact that some Japanese even feel "superior" to other Asians, such as Koreans and Chinese...remember WWII? Hello?

Many Japanese still have a fascination to European/German culture, thanks to WWII. Notice how there are a lot of WWII Sims for import systems that never made it for the states? Several of them have the Axis powers as the good guys. "Kill the Allies!" Many video games and anime are replete with German references. Leiji Masamoto's Space Cruiser Yamato and Captain Harlock are famous for Germanic-Axis themes of strength, superiority and power.

Sadly, most video games that feature cultures other than white or Japanese are presented in characture or hyperbole. The Japanese are not as PC as Western Cultures, so be it. It hasn't gone away and it won't go away anytime soon. As a person of color, I'm glad that Marco Rodriguez is a kick-ass fighter, and it does piss me off that the USA KOF team wear backwards hats and hurl basketballs or when brothers in anime are sometimes drawn jet black with big red lips. But at the same time, I'm not going to cry foul to the ACLU either. These are games, not life.

Japan supplies us with at least 90% of the hot, popular games that we play in the states. With that said, we will still see white and Japanese superstars, a token Black, Hispanic, or (insert nationality here) sprinkled here and there, skinny women with "me bouncy" 42DD tits, and guess what? We will still spend our hard-earned money on the games companies that laugh all the way to the bank.

This is not a rant against whites or Asians, I just want to present the facts and make you aware that racism is in many games but we still buy and enjoy said games. It won't change anytime soon, so next time you fire up your favorite fighter or RPG, it would be something to think about and be aware of. Sometimes I just laugh....

Of course there is racism in Neo game.
Why all the final boss is either Asian or White? We'll need some African-American and Hispanic!!!

Plus how come most Asian female characters always dress less cloth than other people? (Mai, for example)...ggrrrrrr........
