Racism, implied or intended, have been part of gaming since the God knows when. Japan is a very ethnocentric country. Racial stereotypes are for the most part, acceptable there. It is a known fact that some Japanese even feel "superior" to other Asians, such as Koreans and Chinese...remember WWII? Hello?
Many Japanese still have a fascination to European/German culture, thanks to WWII. Notice how there are a lot of WWII Sims for import systems that never made it for the states? Several of them have the Axis powers as the good guys. "Kill the Allies!" Many video games and anime are replete with German references. Leiji Masamoto's Space Cruiser Yamato and Captain Harlock are famous for Germanic-Axis themes of strength, superiority and power.
Sadly, most video games that feature cultures other than white or Japanese are presented in characture or hyperbole. The Japanese are not as PC as Western Cultures, so be it. It hasn't gone away and it won't go away anytime soon. As a person of color, I'm glad that Marco Rodriguez is a kick-ass fighter, and it does piss me off that the USA KOF team wear backwards hats and hurl basketballs or when brothers in anime are sometimes drawn jet black with big red lips. But at the same time, I'm not going to cry foul to the ACLU either. These are games, not life.
Japan supplies us with at least 90% of the hot, popular games that we play in the states. With that said, we will still see white and Japanese superstars, a token Black, Hispanic, or (insert nationality here) sprinkled here and there, skinny women with "me bouncy" 42DD tits, and guess what? We will still spend our hard-earned money on the games companies that laugh all the way to the bank.
This is not a rant against whites or Asians, I just want to present the facts and make you aware that racism is in many games but we still buy and enjoy said games. It won't change anytime soon, so next time you fire up your favorite fighter or RPG, it would be something to think about and be aware of. Sometimes I just laugh....
