Power Adapter for Consolizing MVS

Hey, I'm trying to consolize my MVS MV-1A board. I know that it requires DC +5V 3A/DC +12V 1A. Someone on youtube suggested the AULT SC200 ITE power supply but that gives DC +5V 4A. Isn't too much amperage bad for the system? I'm also wondering if something more like this would be fine? Thanks for any responses!

Just because it can provide 4 amps doesn't mean the system will draw 4 amps.

Having a max amp rating higher than the systems needs is generally a good thing.

Awesome! Thanks for the help! Looks like I'll be using the AULT power supply then. Hopefully I don't break my MVS board in the process.

4A is complete overkill unless you have money to blow. The one you linked will do just fine. See this thread for actual MVS power usage and next time search for your answer first.

The SC200 made more sense back when you could get them for $20 or less. It's nice (I have a similar 300) but yeah, complete overkill for a MVS.

Jameco sells power supplies (they look like Xbox 360 power supplies) that provide 5v and 12v.

Xian Xi was the one that mentioned it to another user on another thread, I bought one for my CMVS 2-slot and it works just fine.

I also use it for my Pal Amiga CD32

XX stated that any supergun needs +5v/6A and +12v/1A power rails. It took me some time, but I was able to find one. :) cost me about $40 though.

You don't need 6A for a super gun and MVS combined! The MVS uses (with a cart, say 161 in 1) around 1.3 amps. A 2, 4 or 6 slot will use more but not massively more. 3A would be fine probably for the multislots, 2A for single slots.

You don't need all 6A for most games but some systems like Naomi with all the trimmings pull a lot of amps. 6A is a good solid amount to have under the hood as it will play about 95% of the stuff out there.

Depending on what multislot you use(taken by MKL):

Wow, those 4 slots use a lot of juice lol! I would never have imagined it jumping up so much! Sounds like 6A on the 5v is a good idea in any cab really.

I should have measured the Naomi with the Capcom IO board hooked up. If anyone has one, I'd love to know the exact numbers for the mobo plus capcom io and/or GD-rom.

Oh and he said it was only with the old 4 slot and 6 slot. The newer MV4FT/2 versions use much less.

It's all that seperate TTL logic - there's a tonne of chips on there. No wonder they have slot problems with all those chips.

I use a 2.2amp 5v AC adaptor for my MV-1FS CMVS.

When I recommend a power supply amperage range I usually have some cushion in there since most power supplies used are just switching and not regulated. If a system uses say 5.2A, I'd rather go with a 6A than a 5.5A. You don't want to be using a power supply that is at it's limit, it's more prone to failure at that point.

The usual analogy is that amperage is like horsepower, it's only used when you push the accelerator.

Thanks for all the info guys! I just took the shell off of my MVS board and realized it's actually an MVS FZ board. I read that the board will never use more than 3 amps of current so the AULT SC200 that I bought should still be fine. I have one other question about wiring the power supply up. According to the Manual the Jamma pin connectors have pins for both +12V and +5V connections. Do I want to connect the 5V pin from my power supply to the 5V Jamma pin, in addition to the 12V pin from the power supply being connected to the 12V Jamma Pin, or should I only connect the 5V? Do I also need to connect the 3 remaining power supply Pins to grounds, seeing as the power supply has 5 pins (5V, 12V, Common, Common, Common)?

Run them through a dpdt switch(on-off) and connect both voltages to the mobo. You can run +5v only but it requires you to modify the board to run off only one voltage. If you have an SC200, just use both.

They will likely already be connected to each other, so you only need 1 ground pin. Just double check polarity before you power it up or you could kill the MVS.

First time on here. I'm in a very similar situation as OP, but instead I bought a consolized Neo Geo thats missing the adapter and need to know what kind is needed and where I can get one. Is this is a 5V/3A as well? If so, would something like this at Amazon work? http://amzn.com/B00DHSBFRO What size tip do I need?

You need to post a picture of the power input. It's odd that they didn't include the PSU.

Yeah, bought off a guy who got it at an estate sale. Was too good of a deal to pass up considering what consolized Neo Geo's are going for. I've attached a pic of the input.

First, you need to figure out the power inlet's polarity. It's either center negative or center positive.

Use a multimeter with the continuity test and put one lead on that center pin and the other to pin 1 on the JAMMA edge, if it beeps then it's a center negative tip, if there is no beep, connect it to pin 3 on the JAMMA edge. If it beeps then it's center positive. You really need to find which one the tip is before you buy a power supply as you can damage everything with a tip that is the wrong polarity.
