What do you think are the most overated games ever? Here are mine in no order:

Mario 64: I was extremely dissapointed when I first played this. I was expecting something revolutionary, but all I got was Mario in 3d with worse gameplay. I have come to like the game more since then, but it really isn't that great, and the fact that it beat NiGHTs in EGMs top 100 just really pisses me off.

Zelda: The Ocorina of Time: I was surprised how good the game was when I first played it, since I was expecting another Mario 64, but the more I played it, the less like Zelda it seemed. I got bored not long after becoming an adult and have barely touched it since.

Castlevania: Symphany of the Night: Don't get me wrong, I think this game is great. The thing is that you hear everyone go on about how it's the best in the series when there are plenty that are better.

Mega Man X4: Having loved the first game and heard many good thing about it, I decided to pick it up. Unfortunately, the Classic X1 gameplay and style were gone, the levels weren't that great, and they had to add that jet-ski thing level. It's still good, but nothing special.

Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time - I hate this game It was hyped and hyped for years and when ti was finally released it just didn't even seem like a decent game. The Zelda series has only gotten worse since, with the release of Majora's Mask and the upcomming Zelda on GameCube which looks horrible.

Final Fantasy VIII: This another game which received way too much hype and praise. It's terrible. The storyline is FULL of plot holes, and really isn't engaging in the least. Not to mention the Junction and Draw systems which are 100% un-fun.

Gran Tourismo 3 A-SPEC: Wow, it's the original GT with better graphics. I like how everyone considers this the ultimate racing sim when you can crash into walls going 80 miles an hour and bounce off harmlessly with no damage to your car and your wheels just get a bit out of sorts. Wow, that is SO REALISTIC.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: I don't see what makes this game stand out from the countless other x-tream games out there that are just like it. I think chewing on nails is more fun.

IMO GT3 is very overrated cos' first of all despite the great graphics comes in the jagged edges and also that unrealistic looking trees. That spectator stands too don't look hot either. They seem to be some cardboard 'cut-out' dressed in high-res.there are no spectators movement at all.The sun rising from the background is no big deal, even the DC could do that.It just covers up the unrealistic graphics pretty well.Oh,and the gameplay is not that "realistic".No damage after crush whatsoever.Daytona USA 2001 could do that crush animation way better. But there are no cars over-turning or anything after a crush.Thats not realistic. Also the gameplay is dull and boring compared to Daytona 2001 on DC or Ridge racer 5 on ps2.

Final Fantasy VIII

Oh I could RANT for pages on this game. It was so over rated. But the real shame is it had SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!! The character designs were great, the military theme was a GREAT change of pace, and the music is some of my favorite from the series! But they killed it with the battle system and the story. When I heard the phrase "We will use the love of our fiends to travel through time/space to save the world" I almost threw my controller at the screen. And the fact that thre was like no central evil character thorughout the game was another big miss.

Ahh well, on to smaller things.
Mario 64 and Zelda: TOoT were great games. Loved 'em.
GT3: I don't like racing games (except Mario kart) but this is about as good as it gets. It has REALISTIC gameplay, as far as handliing and car tweaking goes. As well as REAL cars, which they had to give up the damage thing to have (car makers don't want to have thier products be destroyed if it's licened, they're bitches like that), and for god's sake, your' complaining about the "fans" being 2D cut outs? You see them for about .5 seconds? I mean the day when we have full 3D crowds in a game is when we know we've reached the "level" of 3D where we can get better but what's the point.

Peace

I completely agree here. I remember when Mega Man X (1) finally came out on SNES. The game blew me away. I like X2 even more. I finally bought X3 for SNES, which is also great but the music is surprisingly weak. I also have the PC version and its music is much, much better.

Anyway, I didn't play X4 until earlier this year (a side effect of my 5-year Doom addiction). The game didn't impress me one-fourth as much as X1 did 8 years earlier. The series lost its "hard" look and became more of a cartoon. I did like some of the cinemas, although they were nothing spectacular. The voices are ANNOYING. The game was also a breeze until the very end, which I though was very difficult with X (not as much so with Zero). This is the best part of the game. Playing as Zero was a refreshing change of pace though.

Am I the only one who thinks that the animation in the SNES games was better?

The boss names sucked after X3. Split Mushroom? Izzy Glow? Grizzly Slash? I know that Launch Octopus isn't as cool as say, Quick Man, but at least the names in X 1-3 make some sense.

I agreed with you right up until that one.

You crossed the line there.

Did you play it all the way through? I agree it gets a little old after the 85th hour, but no game has held my attention like that one for that long. Usually by the 30th hour of RPGs, I'm completely bored. Not so with DW VII.

AXLE THE RED?! AXLE THE RED?! What the hell were they smoking? In all fairness, the Japanese names were par for the course (Crescent Grizzly, Shining Hotarunicus--I suppose that's supposed to be Firefly, Spiral Pegacion). In the US version, they got lazy and just named the bosses after G&R members.

Taiso: That's true. I think the high reviews are people who paid $200 on ebay for the US version (only 10,000 ever made, apparently) and don't want to admit to anybody--even themselves--that they made a grievous mistake.

Ducky: I know many folks hate the look of the new Zelda, but try to see it from the other side. The Zelda series has always been about whimsical fantasy to some extent--fairies, princesses kidnapped by evil ogres. And if you think about it, the Link in this game sort of reminds me a bit of the Link in the pre-64 Zelda games and the Oracles games for GBC. Besides, I think Shigeru Miyamoto knows what he's doing.

As for FFVIII, that game was just dull, the writers knew nothing about making you care about the characters ("What..." "...ever."*), and many of them had insanely stupid shticks (Irvine was the mad pimp daddy, Zell was the pugilistic type, Selphie was the hyperenthusiastic super convoy happy girl, and Raijin and Fujin... well, the less said about those two the better, ya know? FINISHED.).

*Quistis kept finishing what Squall said, and Squall kept saying "Whatever." It just made sense. ^_^

Agreed. SC was good, but not really good. It suffered from cliche/overdramatic music and some of the most stupid and gay character designs (Kilik, Maxi, Voldo, etc).

And of course, 3D final fantasies suck balls (except Tactics).

I would like to add Tekken 4 - the scrub fest.

House of the Dead 2.

And anything made by Sony (GT3, Legend of Success Dragoon, etc).

Soul Calibur (DC): WAY WAY WAAAYYY TOO OVERRATED! Don't even get me started...

Final Fantasy 8: Trash. The only FF game I started and didn't finish. People who really dig this game don't know what a good RPG is. Square needs to off it's Summons/CGI tip and get back to making great RPGs.

Ummm, have you even TRIED Half-Life? Probably the greatest game for the computer ever (damn, it took a while to beat my personal fave Sam and Max: Hit the Road)

Anyhoo, I also have to disagree with the assertion that all the FFs past 6 have been overrated. FFVII was great and so was 9.

As for games I think were overrated:

ESPN XTreme: Way back when PSX came out in 1996, everyone fucking loved this game. I've always hated it.

FFVIII: What was Squaresoft thinking?!

MGS2: I'm sorry, but Raiden can kiss my fucking ass, bring back Snake and Kojima, you are not God, stop putting so many advertisements for your other games in Metal Gear!

Actually I rented X5 on Monday, but have played only through the first stage. So far it doesn't seem to be as good as X4.

For the record, I don't think X4 is a bad game at all, but I do think that X 1-3 were much better. I would still play X4 before at least 90% of the other games in existence.
