WWE RAW Results: 1-7-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (direct link to Caldwell's report). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1 -- SHAWN MICHAELS & MR. KENNEDY vs. CHARLIE HAAS & TREVOR MURDOCH

They joined the action in progress with Kennedy working on Haas. Strange lighting during the match. The arena was bathed in red, as if Kane's ring entrance was permanently fixed on the arena. Michaels tried to tag himself into the action, but Kennedy didn't want to leave. So, Michaels chucked Kenned to the floor. Michaels tossed Haas to the outside, then Haas grabbed a mask and slapped it on. Looked like Del Wilkes's Patriot mask. He started puffing out his chest and no-selling, apparently drawing superhuman strength from the mask. Haas worked on Michaels, who tried to make a tag to Kennedy, but Kennedy pulled a Nash on Samoa Joe. Michaels then ripped off the mask and started taking Haas apart. He warmed up the band for the superkick, but noticed Kennedy inching toward him to make a tag. Michaels then found a right hand punch from Haas, but Michaels smashed him with the superkick after Kennedy made a blind tag. Kennedy then hopped in and gave Michaels the Mic Check finisher. He then covered Haas for the win. Kennedy spent the next minute leaning next to Michaels to gloat. I hope he brushed his teeth this morning. Kennedy eventually left, with Michaels still writhing in the ring.

WINNERS: Michaels & Kennedy in 5:00. Ross called it a train wreck. It was just weird, but they eventually got the point across between Kennedy and Michaels. Need to see more of this Haas bit to get a read on it. (*1/2)

2 -- HARDCORE "CARLITO" HOLLY (w/Santino Marella) vs. CARLITO "HARDCORE HOLLY" (w/Cody Rhodes)

Ross used the opening minute to plug some house show notes, including Santino and Carlito working well together, and Holly qualifying for the Rumble. Carlito quickly knocked the wig off Holly's head to start on the offensive. Holly made his comeback, then Santino suddenly got on the apron to distract the ref. Oops. Holly took a bite of the apple and spit it in Carlito's face. Santino hopped off the apron as Holly delivered the Alabama Slam on Carlito. Ross called it the Phi Slamma Jamma (a reference to Olajuwon and Drexler's Houston Cougars - the greatest uncrowned college basketball team ever assembled.) Holly with the pin on Carlito for the easy win.

WINNER: Holly in 3:00. Silly match. Didn't do much other than put Holly in a different light. (1/2*)

3 -- MICKIE JAMES vs. MARIA vs. MELINA vs. JILLIAN HALL vs. ASHLEY MASSARO

There was a giant bed in the ring. Pillows began to fly everywhere as there was an odd humming in the background. Bad memories of that stupid electric cage match TNA did in St. Louis at the Lockdown PPV. The humming stopped and the crowd popped. Maria with the first highspot of the night with a Bronco Buster on Ashley in the corner. They started doing moves on the bed. Reminds me of the numerous hotel beds my brother and I broke having impromptu wrestling matches years ago. Fortunately, the bill has never come due and the statute of limitations has well expired. They set up Jillian in center bed. Ashely then came off the top rope with an elbow drop on Jillian for the pin and the win. Afterward, the babyface divas bounced on the bed.

WINNER: Ashley in 4:00. Not quite as titillating when they start in the lingerie instead of starting in a robe, and then moving to the lingerie. OK, I've fulfilled my duties of offering analysis today. (n/a)

4 -- TRIPLE H vs. WILLIAM REGAL -- First Blood match

Ross gave Regal instant credibility in the match by referencing him fighting for a living at the age of 15 in Blackpool, England. They went to the outside to start things off, and Hunter tried to jam Regal's face into the ring steps. He then tried to chuck the steps into Regal's face, but Regal moved just in time. Regal and Hunter traded blows into the ringpost, then Regal landed left hand jabs to Hunter's face. Back in the ring, Regal took off one of the corner turnbuckle pads. He then jammed Hunter's forehead into the exposed steel before landing more left hand blows. He tried to open up Hunter with more jabs before walking into a left knee strike. Still no blood. Hunter blocked a blow into the exposed steel, then Hunter landed repeat head blows into the exposed steel. Hunter went for the Pedigree, but Regal blocked and slingshot him head-first into the steel post above the turnbuckle. Regal then nailed a running knee strike to the face. Still no blood. Good heat for this. Regal slowly walked to the outside and picked up a pair of brass knucks. He gave the object a kiss, then approached Hunter back in the ring. Hunter blocked, though, and nailed a spinebuster in center ring. He grabbed Regal by the hair and tried to open him up with repeat knuckle punches to the forehead that eventually got blood from the forehead. With the match over, Hunter added insult to injury with the Pedigree in center ring. On the way out of the ring, he knocked over the cameraman for good measure. Ross with the line that sticks: Hunter is still not in the Royal Rumble.

WINNER: Hunter in 7:00. Nice TV match. Hunter gave Regal enough offense to remind viewers why Regal is more than just a puppet GM. (**)

5 -- CHRIS JERICHO vs. SNITSKY & JBL --- handicap match

Snitsky started with Jericho, who cleared him to the outside early. JBL then knocked Jericho to the floor from behind. Jericho got in some offense by slamming JBL into the announce table. JBL, with his Stan Hansen wobbly walk, then got himself DQ'ed when he slammed the ring bell into Jericho's face. He then grabbed a TV cable and started choking Jericho around the neck. Lawler asked where JBL got the cable. There's a tasteless line that would follow right there. JBL then dragged Jericho around the ringside area as if this were a bullrope match. They went to the top of the stage area where JBL continued to pull and yank Jericho with the cable. Ross with a line about Jericho being a Texas Longhorn being dragged around the pasture. He called JBL's actions reprehensible. He started to climb one of the light towers to apparently hang Jericho, but referees and officials eventually stormed out and restrained JBL. "You suck" was the chant from the fans near the stage.

WINNER: Jericho via DQ in 2:00. Other than the not-talked-about Benoit visual reference throughout this, it was a heck of a segment to get heat on JBL and set up Jericho's eventual comeback. JBL is so limited physically, but so gifted as a natural heel. (n/a)

6 -- THE HIGHLANDERS vs. HORNSWOGGLE MCMAHON & MICK FOLEY -- Rumble entry match

Foley started things off in his street clothes and tagged out to Hornswoggle, who got some offense before Foley tagged back in. The Highlanders then cornered Foley and started working him over. Foley then made his comeback with Socko and a DDT. Hornswoggle took a tag and came off the top with a tadpole splash on Robbie for the win. "Hornswoggle and Foley are going to the Rumble!" declared Ross. Let the celebration begin at the casino.

WINNERS: Foley & Hornswoggle in 3:00. Tongith's self-depreciation line from Foley would be Foley trying to get another paycheck via a McMahon. (1/2*)

7 -- IC champion JEFF HARDY vs. UMAGA -- steel cage match

The match started with Umaga quickly going on the offensive. He missed with a corner splash and ate the ringpost. Umaga then tried to launch Hardy into the cage wall, but Hardy clung to the wall as if he were Spiderman. He tried to climb out, but Umaga yanked him down as Orton screamed at him from outside the cage.

[Commercial Break]

They returned with a camera shot from the back of Orton's head as he looked into the cage from ringside. During the break, Umaga ran over Hardy with power offense. He continued to rip into Hardy as Orton screamed at him from ringside. Ross started to talk about the 3ds of Orton: damage... and then the announcers went silent for several seconds. Usually that's when the producers in the headset are relaying information or cutting off the line. At 7:00, Hardy tried to make his comeback, but Umaga back dropped him into the steel cage wall. Umaga made a cover, but Hardy got his foot on the rope.

[Q9 -- over-run]

Orton had enough and chucked a chair way over the cage and the ring for Umaga to use. And then another chair. And another chair. Umaga picked up one chair and nailed Hardy in the back. He kicked out of a pin at 10:00, though. Orton became frustrated with Umaga's inability to put Hardy away. Umaga started climbing the cage, but Hardy got up and crotched Umaga on the top rope. Hardy then ran off one of the chairs and jump kicked Umaga off the ropes. Hardy then measured Umaga for the Twist of Fate, but Umaga shoved him off and nailed a jab to the throat. Much to Orton's delight, Umaga set up the running rear splash in the corner, but Hardy moved and made his big comeback. He chucked a chair into Umaga's upper torso, then he hit a DDT face-first into the seat of a chair. Hardy tried to leave the cage, but Orton slammed the door into Hardy's face. Umaga made a cover, but Hardy kicked out to a big pop. With the fans chanting for Hardy, he blocked the Samoan Spike and nailed the Twist of Fate. Hardy then looked around the cage trying to figure a way out with Orton stalking the cage. Hardy ripped off his t-shirt, the crowd went nuts, and he climbed to the tip-top of the cage. No one was quite sure what Hardy had in mind here. With Umaga standing up inside the ring, Hardy flew off the cage with a Whisper in the Wind that caught Umaga in the upper body. Oh wow, what a spot. A very risky move, but Umaga protected him with his large frame. The crowd came unglued for this, and Hardy eventually rolled over and covered Umaga for the win as Orton stood motionless with his jaw dropped to the floor.

After the match, Lawler demanded a replay of the Whisper in the Wind. They waited for it, though, as Hardy climbed to the top corner of the cage and looked down at Orton, who looked up at him from outside the cage. Great camera work here to show Hardy looking down at Orton while Ross said Hardy is on top of the world. They did show the replay of the WitW, including a nice slow-mo video of Hardy crashing down on Umaga. They closed the show with Orton backing up the entrance ramp while Hardy flashed the V.1 signal from his perch atop the cage.

WINNER: Jeff Hardy in 14:00. The next John Cena is upon us. The possibility has been there for ten years, but now Hardy is coming into his own as a main event star. That Whisper in the Wind spot, with great build-up and reinforcement from the announcers, is exactly how a major highspot should be featured on a wrestling show. Hardy is unbelievably hot right now, and the match with Orton for the title should give the Rumble PPV a significant boost beyond the buys generated by the Rumble match itself. (***3/4)

ECW on Sci-Fi Results: 1-8-08

Results coutesy of PWTorch.com (direct link to Caldwell's full report). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1 -- WWE tag team champions JOHN MORRISON & THE MIZ vs. JIMMY WANG YANG & SHANNON MOORE -- WWE Tag Title match -- 15-minute iron man match

Their countdown clock was about two seconds slower than my stopwatch, so we'll see how that goes. Shannon tried several attempts to score a quick pin on Morrison early on. Tazz with the early line of the night that it's good strategy, because a football team that scores first usually has the advantage. Whoever came up with that line must have missed Ohio St.'s last two title games. Yang took a hot tag at 2:30 and monkey flipped Morrison clear over to his stomach. Morrison came back with a roll up near the ropes, but Moore broke up the pin. Yang had a pin following a spin kick, but Miz had the ref distracted. When Yang tried to argue with the ref, Morrison popped right up and schoolboyed Yang for the first pin.

Miz & Morrison 1-0 at 3:45.

They returned with Morrison working over Yang on the mat. Yang fought out of the heel corner, then went for a moonsault, but Morrison crotched him. Morrison then hung Yang upside down so Miz could land some blows behind the ref's back. Morrison then went for a top rope back drop, but Yang elbowed out and nailed a moonsault press for the pin.

Yang & Moore 1-1 at 8:45.

There's no break in between falls, as Miz came right into the ring and went after Yang's left knee. Morrison tagged in when Yang put up a fight against the Miz, and he worked over the left knee as well. Yang escaped with a corkscrew kick, but Miz tagged in and slammed Yang's left knee into the ringpost.

With 4:00 remaining, Miz continued to work over the knee. Miz then hung Yang back-first across his knees, and Morrison hit a springboard elbow smash to Yang's chest for a nice double-team combo. Yang fought out of the heel corner with 2:30 left in the match and finally made the hot tag to Moore, who flew off the top with a splash. He cleaned house before landed a flip dive on Miz on the floor. But, Morrison shoved him into the guardrail. Yang then recovered and came off the top with a splash onto Morrison on the floor. Moore flung Miz back into the ring 1:30 left in the time. He stalked Miz and hit a fallaway neckbreaker for a close nearfall. Does Moore have a finishing move? He slammed Miz into the ringpost, then came off the top with a corkscrew moonsault for a nearfall at 14:10. Moore couldn't figure out how to get the final fall, so he tagged out to Yang. Yang slipped on a neckbreaker attempt, made a cover, but Morrison put Miz's foot on the bottom rope. Yang then nailed a leaping dropkick on Miz for another nearfall. Yang with a moonsault press that just did catch Miz in the head when Miz moved in the way to protect the fall. Yang couldn't make the cover because of his knee, though, and time expired, giving Miz & Morrison retention of the belts.

WINNERS: Draw at 15:00, Miz & Morrison retain the belts. Good story, but they were off on too many spots late in the match. Guys were out of position and had to quickly move in the way of highspots, instead of moving out of the way of spots if this were a real fight. (*1/4)

2 -- MARK HENRY vs. COLIN DELANEY

Colin tried a right hand, but Henry smashed him to the mat. Henry then threw Colin high into the air and Colin flailed his legs like a little kid jumping off the high dive. Henry then did the Bonzai splash in the corner. Henry finished him off with a rolling slam for the easy win.

WINNER: Henry in 1:00. Colin's gimmick is simply great. I'm giving him honorable mention for Rising Star in the year-end awards. His delivery is spot-on for creating the unintentional humor. (n/a)

3 -- ECW champion C.M. PUNK vs. CHAVO GUERRERO -- Chavo's 2nd chance to earn a title shot

Chavo scored with an arm drag in the opening seconds, then he took Punk down to the mat with an amateur hold. He nailed a European uppercut in the corner, but Punk quickly sent him to the outside. Chavo held his head as Punk stood tall in the ring looking down at him.

Back from break, Chavo was in control after slingshotting Punk across the top rope during the break. Chavo was working on the ribs with an abdominal stretch, but Punk escaped, only to crash into Chavo's knees on an attempted elbow drop. Chavo went back to a surfboard stretch in center ring. Punk quickly countered into a roll-up, but Chavo popped right up and nailed a clothesline. He went back to the ribs with a gutbuster and kick to the stomach. Punk tried to use his legs to kick his way back into the ring, so Chavo re-focused his attack on Punk's legs. Nice.

At 10:00, Punk suddenly countered a leg vice into step one of a Boston Crab before catapulting Chavo over the ropes to the floor. Punk then flew through the ropes with a suicide dive on the entrance ramp. Back in the ring, Punk hit a springboard clothesline. Crowd was pretty quiet here. Punk then executed a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker for a nearfall. Chavo suddenly caught Punk in the corner with a bridge pin for a nearfall, but Punk sent him into the corner for the knee strike and running bulldog combo. Punk made the cover for a nearfall. He went for a double-underhook, but Chavo rammed him into the corner. He then went for the Three Amigos suplexes, but Punk slipped out of the third into G2S position. Chavo escaped, though, and nailed a gutwrench backbreaker for a close nearfall that finally popped the crowd. The crowd came to life with a "C-M-Punk" chant as Chavo measured Punk for more offense. He went to the corner and removed a turnbuckle pad. The ref finally got wind of it and turned his back to put the pad back on. Chavo then grabbed the ECW Title belt from ringside and re-entered the ring, but the ref caught him with the belt and called for an instant DQ. To add insult to injury, Punk picked up Chavo and gave him the Go 2 Sleep after the match. Punk held onto his belt and kissed it before playing to the crowd to close the show.

WINNER: Punk via DQ in 15:00. Fine match. They could have used a believable nearfall on Punk earlier in the match to get the crowd firmly involved in the action. The program is now Chavo lost by count-out last week, he lost by DQ this week, and he'll probably get a third chance next week or sometime soon down the road. (**1/2)

TNA Impact! Results: 1-9-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (direct link to Caldwell's report). Condensed to in-ring results only. Click the link for the total report but beware the multiple pop-ups!!!

1 -- SENSHI & ELIX SKIPPER vs. CHRIS SABIN & ALEX SHELLEY

Tenay opened the match by talking about Sabin & Shelley getting screwed at the PPV by Team 3D. Senshi and Skipper jumped Detroit's finest before the match started, then Skipper cut off Shelley with a knee to the gut. This match is going short with the babyfaces on the disadvantage to start things off. Shelley, who didn't even have a chance to remove his ring jacket, was double-teamed in the heel corner. He finally caught Senshi with a jawbreaker before hot-tagging to Sabin. The action picked up, with Shelley and Sabin doing a bunch of double-team spots on the opponents. They did a double enziguiri kick on Senshi, then Shelley made the pin for the win. West offered the scripted lines about Sabin and Shelley doing things in the ring that no one else can do.

WINNERS: Sabin & Shelley in 5:00. Fast-paced action to repeat the basic X Division formula match. (*1/2)

2 -- JUDAS MESIAS (w/James Mitchell) vs. CHRIS HARRIS

Mitchell on commentary with Tenay and West. Harris went to the announce table to complain about whatever, which allowed Judas to jump Harris on the floor. The action went into the ring as Tenay quizzed Mitchell on "the secret". Mitchell said either himself or Chris "Abyss" will reveal the secret next week. In the ring, Judas went for a top rope splash, but Harris moved out of the way. Mitchell moved to ringside for a closer look. Harris with a big left-arm clothesline, leading to a spinebuster for a nearfall. Harris went for the catatonic, but Mitchell had the ref distracted. Judas then spewed the mist in the eyes and hit the go-to-hell slam for the win.

WINNER: Judas in 4:00. Basic TV match. Harris showed good energy to cover for him not being in the greatest of shape. (*)

3 -- VKM (B.G. JAMES & KIP JAMES w/Roxxi) vs. PETEY WILLIAMS & SONJAY DUTT

Kip took a double-team to start things off, then he tagged out to B.G., who looked at him like he's washed up. B.G. then took a dropkick from Petey, who posed on the mat. Kip ran in and missed with an elbow smash, leading to Petey posing with push-ups. Petey did more posing in the ring as they cut to a break.

They returned with Kip working over Petey. Suddenly, Scott Steiner hobbled to ringside with his X Division case. With Petey down on the mat, Steiner swapped cases and hobbled away with Petey's Hvt. Title shot case. Petey tagged out, then saw that his case had been jacked. Why did he even bring his case to ringside to begin with? In any event, Petey bailed from ringside to find Steiner. Back in the ring, Dutt rolled up Kip for a quick win.

Afterward, Dutt walked over to So Cal Val and gave her a big smooch on the lips. She acted shocked for a second, then sorta liked it. In the ring, B.G. and Kip argued about how over-the-hill they are. Kip then took the mic and said next week, he wants B.G.'s answer on his partner for the tag title shot. "Another deadline for next week?" Tenay asked. Yes, more deadlines. Just what we all need.

WINNERS: Dutt & Petey in 8:00. Ah, look at Dutt. His partner bails on him and he wins a tag match. Samoa Joe's partner bails on him and he loses a tag match. Too short to amount to much. (3/4*)

4 -- LAX (HOMICIDE & HERNANDEZ w/Selenas) vs. JIMMY RAVE & LANCE HOYT

West excused his inability to figure out that the random gangster was a woman because she was wearing a real baggy shirt all those weeks. It was baggy, but not that baggy. No Christy Hemme ringside. Tenay and West plugged Gail vs. Kong later tonight. In the ring, Homicide walked into a big toss and big boot from Hoyt. Homicide then tagged out to Hernandez, who ran over folks. He choketossed Rave across the ring before pushing him to the opposite side of the ring.

The action broke down as Hoyt went for a moonsault attempt, but Hernandez shoved him to the floor. Back in the ring, Homicide went for the Cop Killer, but Rave countered into a roll-up for a nearfall. Homicide came right back with the Cop Killer for the win. The camera focused on Selenas after the match.

WINNERS: LAX in 3:00. Fine, but not memorable. How silly of us to believe that two hours of Impact would mean longer matches. Now, it's just 100 percent more shorter matches. (1/2*)

5 -- SHARK BOY vs. TOMKO

The bell sounded and Tomko gave Sharkie a big boot to the face. Tomko put his hands on his hips following a fallaway slam, not sure whether he should let him breathe or inflict more damage. Tomko with a torture rack slam into neck breaker for the win. Afterward, Tomko casually left the ring while security put him on a stretcher. Security is now certified to handle medical

WINNER: Tomko in 1:00. Squash. Move along. (n/a)

6 -- TNA women's champion GAIL KIM (125 lbs.) vs. AWESOME KONG (272 lbs.)

Gail avoided Kong's pre-match attack, but Kong nailed a spinning back fist to the face. They fought to the floor where Kong threw Gail on the entrance ramp. They moved to the stage area where Kong measured Gail for a big splash against the wood boards supporting the stage, but Gail moved and Kong went crashing through the wood. Referees spilled to ringside to check on Kong as they cut to a break.

They returned with neither lady counted out despite being on the floor for three minutes. Back in the ring, Kong ran over Gail with a hard clothesline to the throat. Kong went for a corner move, but Gail blocked and nailed a tornado DDT in center ring. Gail made a cover for a nearfall. She then came off the top rope with a leaping back splash for a nearfall. Gail then went to the corner and pointed down at the lady. That gave Kong an opening for a chokeslam when a distracted Gail came off the top rope. Kong dropped Gail with a double underhook for a close nearfall. Gail then came back with kick strikes. She went for a top rope huracanrana, but Kong blocked into a powerbomb. She maintained contact with Gail and executed a second powerbomb, she then finished off Gail with a third powerbomb for the pin and the win to capture the belt.

WINNER: Awesome Kong in 9:00. Maybe my expectations were too high for TNA to execute a simple TV main event title match, but this came off pretty anticlimactic. The opening of the match was brawling on the floor. Then, after the commercial, they went right into the finishing sequence of big spot, nearfall, big spot, nearfall, big spot, announcers dejected, nearfall, repeat. There was no middle to this match. It just continues to me amaze me how TNA wastes so much time on this show that they could only devote six minutes of actual wrestling to a main event TV title match. That said, the action was good, as expected. There was just so much potential for this to be more than just good. (**1/2)

WWE Smackdown Results: 1-11-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (direct link to Park's report). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1- CHUCK PALUMBO vs. JAMIE NOBLE

Chuck rode out with Michelle McCool on his hog. Wow, that sounds dirty. Cole noted that, while Noble has beaten Palumbo three times in a row, he did some research and no one has ever beaten Palumbo four times in a row. That’s some nice detective work, Lou. I guess they figured the Noble and McCool storyline wasn’t interesting enough, so they made up that “record” to get more interest in the match. Palumbo used his power to just toss Noble around in the beginning. Palumbo had Noble down on the ground and was brutalizing him with forearms. Palumbo tried to separate Noble’s jaw with his bare hands. Samoan drop by Chcuk, but only got a two-count. Palumbo slammed Noble back-first into the turnbuckle. Noble wormed his way out of a move and started kicking at the legs of Palumbo. Top-rope clothesline by Noble. Crucifix roll-up for three by Noble!

WINNER: Noble at 4:41. Palumbo dominated, and Noble was painted as just getting lucky.

2- MVP vs. BATISTA

MVP got on the stick before the match and talked about all the titles he’s won since coming to Smackdown. He said at Royal Rumble, he’ll add another title to his resume: “Man who retired Ric Flair.” He said Flair was the greatest, before MVP came into the industry. Montel said he wished Flair was at the arena, but he was in Japan doing promotional work. He did some more boasting until Batista’s music hit.

MVP tried to hit and run against Batista and did so successfully. MVP worked Batista to the mat with a side-headlock. Batista showed off a leap-frog, then shoulderblocked MVP down. Elbowdrop by Batista, then some shoulders in the corner. Knee to the temple by MVP, then he went after the legs. Porter hit his running kick and knocked Batista out of the ring.

Cole said that MVP had dominated throughout the break. MVP tried to whip Batista into the corner but Batista fought back. MVP dropped him with a toe-hold, then a dropkick. Porter continued to work the head and neck region of Batista with submission moves. Batista used his power to pick up MVP and slam him, but MVP rolled over and continued holding on to a headlock. Batista turned the tables and was able to free himself, but his shoulder into the corner hurt his neck after MVP had been working on it. He recovered and hit a tilt-a-whirl side-slam by Batista got two. Spinebuster by the Animal. He set up for the Batista Bomb but MVP scurried out of the ring. He took control by draping Batista over the middle rope and hit the running kick again. He tried a pile-driver on the outside, but Batista back-dropped him instead. Batista was the aggressor, but made a mistake and missed a charge on MVP, instead hitting the post. The count from referee Charles Robinson was on, and both men were on the apron at eight. Batista knocked MVP off the apron to win by count-out.

WINNER: Batista at 12:42.

3- MARK HENRY & MATT STRIKER vs. THE UNDERTAKER- HANDICAP MATCH

Henry started with Taker and Taker started working Henry’s left arm and less than a minute into the match, went for the rope-walk. It’s just not believable that soon in a match, and luckily, Striker distracted Taker enough for Henry to pull him down. That was about it, as Taker went back on offense, kicking Striker in the head. He splashed both men in opposite corners then gave Striker the Snake Eyes and the big boot. Old School to Henry again. Still think it’s kinda early- because of the time it takes, I think an opponent really needs to be worn down for that move to work so early. Tombstone for Striker and that’s all.

WINNER: Taker at 2:25.

4- RANJIN SINGH vs. HORNSWOGGLE- ARM-WRESTLING MATCH

Singh got on the mic and prematurely pronounced victory. Hornswoggle’s arms weren’t long enough to reach, so referee Jimmy Korderas got a chair from ringside. Singh had Khali with him and Hornswoggle had Finlay with him. Finlay had some sort of device that shocked Singh when he grabbed the post on the table for leverage. Hornswoggle put on a pair of rubber gloves and as Singh was being shocked by holding the post, Hornswoggle beat him several times. Khali kicked Finlay out of the ring but Finlay grabbed a chair and hit Khali with a chair as Khali grabbed Hornswoggle.

WINNER: Hornswoggle. More high comedy from the WWE writing team.

5- KANE vs. DOMINO

Domino pushed Kane and talked trash. Not a good idea. Uppercut put Domino down and Kane punched away at the former tag champ in the corner. Running clothesline in the corner from The Big Red Machine. Sidewalk slam by Kane, who then went to the top. He hit the clothesline and set up for the chokeslam. Deuce distracted Kane, allowing Domino to get some brief offense. He went to the top and was caught by the throat by Kane, chokeslammed, and pinned.

WINNER: Kane at 1:34. Just a squash for Kane to build up his credibility going into the Rumble.

6- REY MYSTERIO vs. CHAVO GUERRERO

I’m surprised we didn’t get an interview from either guy, giving their thoughts on the match, especially with the ambiguity of Chavo’s character at this point. Before the match started, Edge walked out, belt over shoulder. He joined the commentary team for the bout. Coach tries to play the heel commentator, but he doesn’t have the credibility that JBL had. It’s a tough act to follow, no doubt. Headscissor by Rey on Chavo, followed by a somersault for a near-fall. European uppercut by Chavo. Bodyslam and a somersault onto Rey by Chavo for two. Interesting dichotomy here. Chavo got hung up on the ropes and Rey kicked him in the back. Chavo threw Rey face-first into the steel steps after a couple of mis-timed moves. Rey was hurting on the outside as the show went to break.

Chavo had Rey in an arm-bar when the show returned. Faceplant by Chavo for one. Chavo stuffed his boot into Rey’s throat in the corner until the ref made him break. Side suplex for two. Chavo did some more stretching of Rey until Rey twisted out. Rey hit another headscissor, then ducked a Chavo dive and Guerrero went through the ropes. Rey went from the top and jumped onto Chavo on the outside. Chavo flipped Rey over his head for a two-count. Guerrero went for the Three Amigos, but Rey blocked the second one and threw Chavo in position for the 619. That connected, and Rey hit a frogsplash (though it appeared to be more of a regular splash) for the three count.

WINNER: Rey at 11:14.

Edge attacked Rey after the match, but Rey was getting the upper hand. That changed when Kurt Hawkins and Zach Rider came to Edge’s aide. Edge taunted Rey with the belt as Rey was lying prone in the ring.

Source: The Wrestling Observer Newsletter

We reported earlier that The Wrestling Observer Newsletter had noted a big name of WWE's past - a multi-champion superstar was set to return with the company.

The January 14 edition of the Newsletter confirms that former multi-time WWE Champion Paul Wight - The Big Show - has either signed with the company or has agreed to a deal, and will be starting full-time very soon.

Big Show is down to 440 lbs after leaving pro wrestling to rest, and pursue a possible career in boxing, which obviously included boxing training that got him in quite a good shape. Dave Meltzer also mentions in the Observer that a part of his boxing deal was that Hulk Hogan was to be his "front man" acting like a manager in wrestling for him by doing promos and appearances. This was also the main reason many boxing promoters were actually interested in Big Show and paying him so much money to learn the sport. These plans, however, fell apart at some point, and Show realized that at his age, boxing might not be the right direction to go anyway. There have also been no recent updates or even talks of Hogan doing his own wrestling tour - a very discussed topic of the past. Hence with nothing on the horizon, Big Show is back with WWE.

----------------------------------------------------

TNA has officially confirmed that Chris Harris is no longer with the company. A message was sent to TNA mobile subscribers tonight that "TNA has parted ways with Wildcat Chris Harris".

WWE RAW Results: 1-14-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (link to Caldwell's report). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1 -- ASHLEY MASSARO & MARIA & MICKIE JAMES vs. MELINA & JILLIAN HALL & Women's champion BETH PHOENIX

They had a pretend wrestling match until Mickie and Beth took tags to pick up the pace and get the crowd involved. Mickie with a top rope splash, but she played to the crowd too much, allowing Beth to go for her finisher. Mickie slipped out, though, and nailed an enziguiri kick for a nearfall. Suddenly, the action broke down all over the place, with the divas spilling to the floor. Mickie and Beth were left in the ring where Mickie nailed a series of kicks before falling into the top rope. Beth then finished off Mickie with the fisherman buster for the pin and the win.

WINNERS: Team Beth in 4:00. Beth vs. Mickie is all they have in the women's division on Raw right now. Everything else is pretend. (1/2*)

2 -- SHAWN MICHAELS vs. TREVOR MURDOCH -- Royal Rumble qualifying match

Murdoch started things off with a few knee strikes and a glancing big boot to the face. Murdoch landed a few right hand blows to the noggin before scoring with a hard corner whip for a nearfall. Michaels came back with a kick strike to the stomach, then they went into an exchange of right hand blows. Michaels answered with a Thesz press and punches before nailing a flying forearm. Michaels then kipped up and landed an atomic drop leading to a series of right hand blows. Michaels with a scoop slam, then he went up top for an elbow drop to the heart. Michaels then warmed up the crowd and the band for Sweet Chin Music. Murdoch saw it coming, so he dropped flat on his back to avoid the move. Michaels then slapped on the grapevine portion of the Sharpshooter into an inside-grip figure four for the submission tap out.

WINNER: Michaels in 4:00. Basic TV match. It would have been nice to see a solid 10-minute back-and-forth match for Murdoch to show he's on the rise as a singles wrestler, but it wasn't to be. (*)

3 -- TRIPLE H vs. SNITSKY

The match started with an exchange of right hand blows. Snitsky then nailed some kicks to the gut in the corner. Hunter came running out of the opposite corner with a clothesline, though. Ross said the irony here is that Snitsky has already qualified for the Rumble. Snitsky then missed with a splash near the ropes and ate the floor.

They returned with Hunter walking into a big boot to the face off the ropes. Both men took a moment to recover as Hunter regained his bearings. Snitsky then stomped Hunter into the corner with boots to the chest. He continued to work over Hunter with a methodical attack before landing a series of elbow smashes for a nearfall. Hunter brought the crowd back to life showing some fire in his comeback attempt, but Snitsky caught him in mid-air with a bear hug. Hunter channeled Warrior a little with his "shake and twist and pump his fist" attempt to escape the hold, before he landed a DDT in center ring. Hunter followed with a facebuster into a Double A spinebuster in center ring. Hunter then measured Snitsky for the Pedigree, but Snitsky dumped him over the top rope to the floor at 9:00. Snitsky followed out and chucked Hunter into the ring steps. He tried to smash Hunter with the ring steps, but Hunter moved just in time. He then grabbed a steel chair and smashed Snitsky with the chair to earn a DQ loss.

Afterward, Hunter shook and shivered before reaching under the ring to find Mr. Sledgehammer. With Snitsky back in the ring, Hunter measured Snitsky for a hammer blow to the gut. He then nailed the Pedigree in center ring for the impactful post-match statement. After Hunter celebrated, Vince McMahon showed up on the Titantron. He said Hunter has become more violent and angry ever since he failed to qualify for the Rumble match. Vince advised Hunter to take a chill pill, then Hunter took the sledgehammer and ripped apart the video screen. Vince disappeared from the video as they did some fireworks to signify the video exploding. Mac's 1984 commercial all over again, just nowhere near as good. So, that must be the end of the current Raw set in time for next week's HD debut.

WINNER: Snitsky via DQ in 10:00. Sluggish mid-portion of the match before Hunter made the big comeback. It seems like there has to be more to Hunter's program leading to the Rumble, but it's good that he's lurking in the shadows keeping himself strong, but not overshadowing the main program of Orton vs. Hardy. (*1/2)

4 -- FIVE-MAN MINI-ROYAL RUMBLE MATCH

Hornswoggle kicked mini Kennedy in the gut, then tried to eliminate him, but to no avail. After 30 seconds, mini Mankind came out to his old WWF c. 1996 music. Looked like a duck with a brown beak. Crowd wasn't sure what to make of this. Mini Mankind had about five inches on the other two in this one. He then reached in for a mini Socko, but Hornswoggle blocked and nailed a kick to the nuts before eliminating him. Hornswoggle then press slammed mini Kennedy to the floor. Out next was mini Batista. He was gassed just hopping to the ring. Once in the ring, Hornswoggle accepted a spear. He then did the Batista rope shake before Hornswoggle nearly eliminated himself. The final participant was mini Kane. He landed a series of uppercuts before taking a belly-to-belly suplex from Batista. Lawler said that if Michael Cole were here, he'd be screaming spinebuster. Oh goodness. Hornswoggle then kicked mini B. in the nuts and tossed him out. Mini Kane almost sat up. Ross said it was like him trying to sit up at the gym. Mini K. then landed uppercuts before slowly climbing the ropes. He came off the top with a clothesline before measuring him for a chokeslam. Hornswoggle blocked, though, and elbowed out. He then dropped mini Kane with the Celtic Cross and kicked him out of the ring.

Oh wait, a sixth entrant. Great Khali's music hit, but it wasn't a mini Khali. The real Khali slowly came to the ring where he grabbed Hornswoggle by the ring jacket. Suddenly, Finlay hit the ring in a suit. He smashed Khali with the shillelagh and took him to the floor. Finlay then ripped the shillelagh away from Singh before landing a left-arm lariat. Khali bailed to the stage as Finlay helped Hornswoggle to his feet. They did a mini jig in center ring afterward.

WINNER: ??? in 6:00. OK, let me first say that I laughed at least twice. Let me next say that if the Royal Rumble PPV buyrate bombs like Survivor Series, Vince has no one to blame but himself for allowing this on his show to make light of the Rumble match. They had done a great job of building up the Rumble match throughout the show, but this was like TNA booking four gauntlet matches before a PPV.

5 -- RIC FLAIR vs. WILLIAM REGAL -- Career Threatening match

They rejoined the action in progress with Regal working over Flair's taped left knee. Lawler equated the smoke hovering over the arena to a dark cloud hanging over Flair's career tonight. Ross did a quick job of setting the stage for Flair's career on the line. Flair came back with work of his own on Regal's left leg. Flair nailed a chop block in center ring before slapping on the figure four. Regal tried to block, but Flair locked the hold in. Regal just did reach the bottom rope to force a break. Regal then caught Flair with a roll up, but he hooked the tights and the ref stopped his count. After a brief argument with the ref, Regal got caught with a roll up. Flair hooked the tights out of the ref's eyes and scored a three count for the win.

WINNER: Flair in 3:00 of TV time. Too short to get a feel for the match, but the story was simple. Flair survives with his classic, yet dummied down tactics that don't work for others. (1/2*)

6 -- IC champion JEFF HARDY vs. WWE champion RANDY ORTON -- Intercontinental Title match

They rushed to ring the bell, then Orton kicked Hardy right in the nuts to earn a DQ. What the? All these nut shots on the show remind me of reading Bret Hart's book talking about Bruce Hart's Stampede booking.

WINNER: Hardy via DQ in 0:02. (n/a)

After the second bell sounded, Orton grabbed the mic and told us not to turn the channel. Orton then grabbed Hardy and chucked him to the floor. He tore away the ringside padding to reveal the concrete floor. Orton went for the RKO on the concrete, but Hardy blocked and they brawled up the entrance ramp to the stage area. Orton chucked Hardy into one of the video walls on the stage. He then measured Hardy for a punt to the head, but Hardy blocked and flipped him off the stage into the padded area below. The camera didn't show Orton landing. Another camera came to the floor and showed Orton flat on his back below the stage. Hardy then looked at Orton and posed. He climbed down the stage stairs, then watched as refs spilled out to check on Orton. Hardy then ripped off his t-shirt and went climbing up one of the light towers on the floor. Refs told him to get down as he climbed to the scaffolding on the light tower. He then measured Orton, but decided to climb a little higher. He went to the second scaffold and looked down, while still selling the nut show.

Hardy did his pose before leaping off the second scaffold with a Swanton Bomb onto Orton. There was a big thud as Hardy crashed down. Suddenly, medics spilled onto the scene to strap both men onto back braces. The announcers went silent as the cameras picked up the audio of both men KO'ed on the ground area below the stage. Both men had pulses. They stayed with this for a while before showing footage of Orton taking the flat back bump off the stage. They showed a faraway shot of Hardy hitting the Swanton Bomb in the general area where Orton was. Orton was the first one wheeled off on a stretcher. They continued to work on Hardy while replaying the big Swanton Bomb spot a few more times. They eventually dragged Hardy onto a stretcher as he slowly lifted his right arm in the air to do the V.1 signal. The recognizable sports scene of a guy on a stretcher giving some sort of inspiring signal to show he's OK. I thought that was a bit much for the angle.

ECW on Sci-Fi Results: 1-15-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (link to Caldwell's report). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1 -- ECW tag team champions JOHN MORRISON & THE MIZ vs. THE HIGHLANDERS (RORY & ROBBIE) -- non-title match

The bell sounded and Tazz called Morrison and Miz metrosexual types. Tazz seemed surprised that he just said that. The tag champs started on the offensive with some double team attempts. Robbie came back with a powerslam for a nearfall at 2:00. the action then broke down with Miz casually flinging Robbie into the corner turnbuckle. He landed a knee lift into neckbreaker for the win.

WINNERS: Miz & Morrison in 3:00. Pointless match. It wasn't clear if the Highlanders have relocated to ECW or simply wandered over from Raw because they're looking for something to do. (1/2*)

2 -- KANE vs. COLIN DELANEY

The bell sounded and Colin slowly put his fists up in the air. Kane smiled, then kicked him in the face. He smashed Colin in the corner before picking Colin up from the mat directly into chokeslam position for the chokeslam. Kane with the pin for the win. Afterward, refs checked on Colin, whose eyes were rolled into the back of his head.

WINNER: Kane in 1:00. Squash. Poor Colin. See you next week. (n/a)

3 -- SHELTON BENJAMIN vs. NUNZIO

Shelton quickly flipped Nunzio onto his back when the bell sounded. Shelton then accepted a knee to the gut, but came back with a t-bone suplex. He smashed Nunzio in the face with a superkick before ramming him in the corner. Styles and Tazz pushed the veiled Italian references to about 25 two minutes in. Shelton caught Nunzio in the corner with a powerbomb before hitting his weak-looking inverted bulldog for the pin and the win. After the match, Shelton took the mic and screamed that there ain't no stopping him. He then finished him off with a second attempt at the inverted bulldog.

WINNER: Shelton in 3:00. Slow, prodding match. Not much to it. Are the announcers at a wrestling show or at the library? It's like they're afraid someone will hear them talking about the matches tonight. (1/2*)

4 -- ECW champion C.M. PUNK vs. CHAVO GUERRERO -- non-title #1 contender match for Chavo

Punk dumped Chavo to the floor in the opening minute. They cut to a break.
They returned with Chavo working over Punk's left shoulder while Edge looked on from the broadcast position. [Q5 -- over-run] Punk tried to make a comeback at 7:00, but Chavo cut him off with more strikes to the left shoulder. Chavo put Punk in a triangle shoulder lock, but Punk escaped. Punk then tried a backslide, but only for a nearfall. Punk landed a standing back kick before landing a knee strike in the corner. Punk went up top, but Chavo yanked Punk's left shoulder across the top rope. Punk fell to the floor, then Edge quickly hopped up and smashed Punk in the back of the head with his ECW Tile belt. Edge quickly ran back to the announce table as if nothing happened. The ref then counted to ten, giving Chavo the win. Styles said that sucks. Edge told him he sucks, good-bye. Tazz said Chavo will probably exercise his title shot right next week. Punk remained KO'ed on the floor as they closed the show.

WINNER: Chavo via countout in 11:00. The usual Punk formula match where the heel opponent picks apart a body part. Crowd was waiting for something to cheer about after a blah show, but they didn't get it here. One positive is the program keeps progressing, with Chavo finally getting his title shot. (*1/4)

And as you can see by WWE's Royal Rumble Past Winners, his victory is not listed among the others. :oh_no:
all the royal rumble's have been badass. and totally fun to watch. but when he got the bigshow in the crossface and had him try to tap out of the rumble man that was awesome. WWE is really getting on my nerves a lot these days.

"Hornswoggle"?? Haha - I'm gonna have to investigate that guy.

But yeah, so I watched the "Self Destruction of Ultimate Warrior" dvd the other day - it was badass. I love the promos!

Does anybody have any recommendations for dvds that have good promos? Are there any best of promo dvds? Especially older stuff... I'd like to have some Macho Man stuff, but I heard his dvd was canceled...

TNA Impact! Results: 1-17-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (link to Caldwell's report). Condensed to in-ring results only. Click link at your risk: PWTorch has TONS of pop-ups!!!

1 -- TOMKO vs. ERIC YOUNG

Young got the best of Tomko in the early minute, so he laughed at his good luck. Ya know, because he's a joke wrestler. Tomko smirked and went for a handshake from Young, who pulled his hand back and smiled. Tomko didn't appreciate it, so he dropped Young with a hard powerslam. Tomko followed with a clothesline for the decisive win.

After the match, James Strom came to the ring and gave Young the Eye of the Storm finisher. Ms. Jackie Moore celebrated with Storm as Tomko paced around the ring with his hands on his hips. Storm then offered Tomko a beer and he had a clean drink. Storm smiled, then they smacked beer bottles in an apparent agreement. That lasted all of one second, as Tomko kicked Storm in the gut and chucked him over the top rope. He picked up the beer belt and handed it back to Young before leaving.

WINNER: Tomko in 2:00. Apparently, Tomko's lone wolf gimmick is to squash smaller opponents, then feel sorry for them because he doesn't like bullies. Or something like that. (1/2*)

2 -- ODB vs. ANGELINA LOVE

Tenay and West talked about Awesome Kong winning the Women's Title from Gail Kim last week, with Gail suffering a concussion. West, ever the classy guy, said ODB's name stands for one dirty bitch. ODB had control, then Angelina came back with a seated neckbreaker for a nearfall. Angelina with a running knee into a boot smash for a nearfall. ODB came back with a hard clothesline, then she smacked her boobs as a sign of powering up. ODB caught Angelina off the ropes and landed a running powerslam for the pin and the win.

Afterward, Tenay said ODB has the opportunity to match Awesome Kong if they ever see that match. ODB then suddenly had a mic in hand. She said Kong has beaten every broad in TNA, but she hasn't beaten the O-D-B. Strong reaction for ODB, who said she has a great idea for a title match at Against All Odds. ODB said she loves to fight, and sometimes, she likes to get whooped. Kong won't be whooping her, though. Now for a drink from the flask.

WINNER: ODB in 3:00. Good set-up for ODB's title chase against Kong. Nice to see a logical storyline in TNA. (3/4*)

3 -- SENSHI vs. KAZ

Senshi opened things on the offensive with stiff kicks to the chest. The fans, having been trained to think that everything is a three-minute match, started their slow clap for Kaz's comeback less than a minute into the match. Kaz made his full comeback with a leg sweep into a turnaround leg drop from the second rope for a nearfall. Kaz avoided a corner splash from Senshi and nailed a leaping thrust kick to the face. Kaz measured Senshi, then hit the Wave of the Future for the win.

After the match, Dustin Rhodes, now dressed as Black Reign, entered the ring and smashed Kaz in the face with the weapon. He checked the cage box and didn't find his Arctic Fox, so he smashed the cage into Kaz's face. Reign landed right hand blows out of frustration before security hit the ring to pull Reign off Kaz.

WINNER: Kaz in 4:00. As usual, post-match took precedence with Reign earning his split paycheck as two separate people. Or something like that. (*)

4 -- LANCE HOYT (w/Jimmy Rave) vs. ABYSS

Abyss knocked Hoyt to the floor less then a minute into the match. Rave then ran into the ring and Abyss press slammed him to the floor. James Mitchell walked out on stage and asked if Abyss was ready to reveal the secret. Abyss shook his head no, so Mitchell walked off to go find the secret backstage. The action resumed in the ring with Hoyt giving Abyss a modified powerslam before going up top where he missed with a moonsault. Abyss with the Black Hole Slam for the win.

WINNER: Abyss in 2:00. Another short squash match. (1/2*)

5 -- ROBERT ROODE (w/Peyton Banks) vs. SONJAY DUTT

Tenay gave an update on Sharmell having her jaw wired shut. Dutt knocked Roode to the outside in the opening minute, and Dutt landed a flip dive on the floor. Banks then grabbed Dutt's foot as he stood on the apron and Roode took advantage with a slam to the floor. Roode tossed him back into the ring as Ms. Brooks bounced to ringside. Ref Earl Hebner told her to leave as they cut to break.

They returned with Dutt putting up a fight against Roode, who landed a spinebuster in center ring for a nearfall. Brooks was still ringside staring down Banks. Dutt came back with a seated press off the ropes for a nearfall. He went for another springboard move, but Roode cut him off. Roode then landed a Perfectplex for the pin and the win.

WINNER: Roode in 8:00. About four minutes of TV time for this one, so right in line with TNA's short-match philosophy. Storylines took precedence over the in-ring action. (3/4*)

6 -- A.J. STYLES vs. SAMOA JOE vs. CHRISTIAN CAGE -- #1 Contender match -- Elimination style

They went right at each other before the men spilled to the floor. They cut to a break. They returned with rapid-fire action. Joe then flung Christian on top of Styles, who was flat on his back on the mat. Joe then kicked both men in the chest. He ended up on the floor where Christian locked in a submission hold on Styles, but Joe returned to the ring to break up the hold. Joe then caught Christian in the corner with a leaping kick to the face. He went for the Muscle buster, but Christian escaped. Joe then bumped the ref with Christian's feet, and Joe locked in the rear naked choke. Styles grabbed a chair while the ref was still down, then he missed with a chair shot. Styles grabbed the chair again and smashed Christian in the face. Styles talked some smack, then Joe kicked the chair into Styles's face. Joe ended up holding the chair when the ref came alive. The ref assumed Joe used the chair on Christian, so he DQ'ed him. Suddenly there are rules in TNA? The ref bailed out of fear and Joe grabbed him by around the neck. Matt Morgan then came to ringside and told Joe to leave. Kevin Nash came down and played peacemaker while telling Joe to use his head and think about it.

* Joe eliminated in 10:00 *

With it down to Styles vs. Christian, both men were recovering on the mat out of the break. Tenay recapped how Joe was eliminated from the match. Back to action where Styles nailed a reverse DDT for a nearfall. Styles then punched away at Christian with right hand blows. Christian came back with a hard clothesline that turned Styles inside-out. He then went up top and missed with a frog splash, but came right back with an inverted DDT for a nearfall. Styles then nailed the Pele soccer kick out of nowhere at 17:00. He went up top, but missed with a leaping smash and Christian speared Styles for another nearfall. Christian went for a top rope frog splash, but Styles got his knees up to block the move. Styles came to his feet and screamed in Christian's ear about finishing him off. Styles went for the Unprettier, but Christian countered into his Unprettier finisher for the win. Afterward, Tenay recapped Christian's TNA Title shot opportunity against Angle at the next PPV.

WINNER: Christian. A very good TV main event, but it takes a while to get into the big matches on the show when everything leading to the main event is bad humor, short matches, and random segments. Another match that proves Styles is good enough on his own to be a main event star without needing the silly character segments backstage. (***)

TNA Global Impact! Results: 1-17-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (link to report) The report is on TNA's recent trip to Japan on January 2-4 and behind-the-scenes stuff with the wrestlers. Here's the quick rundown on the matches:

They went to footage of Christian & Styles & Petey preparing for the opening six-man tag match. Petey said it's great competing here. They showed some highlights from the match, with the TNA six-man team winning. Christian shouted TNA 1, New Japan 0. At the post-match press conference, Christian said it's great to wrestle in front of knowledgeable, respectable fans.

Next were clips from Abyss's match against Nakanishi where Abyss took a face-full of thumbtacks on the entrance ramp. They showed Abyss tapping out to the torture rack. In the post-match press conference, Abyss cut a promo about facing a great opponent. He screamed about the blood on his hands. They showed a clip of him running down some Japanese photographers in the hallway.

Next was footage of Team 3D's victory against Togi Makabe & Toru Yano. In the post-match press conference, Brother Ray said Team 3D has never lost a match in Japan. He congratulated Makabe and Yano on putting up a fight, but said they were way in over their heads.

Next for footage of Tomko & Giant Bernard (A-Train) defending the IWGP Tag Titles. Before the match, Tomko cut a promo about the Steiners being a little older, but still worthy opponents. No mention of who Tomko's partner is. Just a random dude following around Tomko, apparently. After the match, Tomko said it was a dream to face the greatest tag team in history, so their victory must mean something special. Rick cut a promo putting over wrestling for Japan. Scott said he was disappointed the match ended in defeat.

Well, that was quite the lightning-fast recap of four big matches.

1 -- KURT ANGLE vs. YUJI NAGATA -- IWGP 3rd Title match

The bell sounded and Angle quickly jumped Nagata. Don West has joined Tenay on commentary for the match. Angle landed offense, then Nagata charged him with a quick strike, but Angle bailed to the floor. Angle slowly re-entered the ring as Tenay talked about the fight strategy for each man. Don West talked about the sports history in the Tokyo Dome. Angle blocked a kick strike and nailed an overhead release suplex for a one count. Nagata slapped on a reverse chin lock as Angle talked out some spots. Angle broke free, then dove at Nagata's left leg to take the knee out. Nagata cried out in pain and bailed to the floor, where Angle followed out and smashed Nagata in the knee.

At 5:00, Angle took Nagata back into the ring for a toehold and repeat kicks to the knee. Angle then slapped on the figure four, but Nagata grabbed Angle's left foot to prevent full extension of the hold. Nagata tried to turn the hold over to apply the pressure on Angle, but Angle retained the hold until Nagata grabbed the ropes to get a break. Angle took a breather, then went for another mat hold, but Nagata quickly slapped on a cross-arm breaker. They cut to break with Angle in danger of tapping out.

[Q4]

[Commercial Break]

They returned with Angle landing German Suplexes. During the break, Angle avoided a running boot in the corner to regain control. Tenay said they're going to lay-out and let the New Japan announcers call the match. After about five seconds of silence from Tenay and West with Japanese commentary, Tenay came back on to talk about the fan response to the match. So much for laying out. Back to the action where Nagata applied a crossface submission with his arms wrapped around Angle's head rather than his hands across the face like Benoit. Angle suddenly countered into the ankle lock at 14:00, but Nagata countered right back into a crossface. Angle fought the hold and went for the anklelock again, but Nagata flung him off and slapped on the crossface for a third time.

At 15:00, Angle rolled up to his feet and nailed the Olympic Slam. He made a cover for a nearfall. They did a wide-shot of the Dome as both men recovered on the mat. Angle then went to the corner for a moonsault, but Nagata moved out of the way in time. Nagata caught Angle in the corner with a running knee, then he took Angle up top for a belly-to-belly suplex. Nagata made a cover for a two count. Nagata went back to the crossface for a fourth time, but Angle refused to tap. Nagata then transitioned from the crossface to a shoulder wrench, but Angle escaped again. Both men battled on their feet with an exchange of forearm and uppercut blows. Nagata then landed a running boot, but Angle rebounded off the ropes with a running lariat. They reached their feet again and Nagata scored with a release suplex for a close nearfall.

At 20:00, Nagata went for his kick strike to the face, but Angle grabbed Nagata's ankle and sat down on the anklelock in center ring. Angle grapevined the leg ala WrestleMania 21 against Shawn Michaels as Nagata kept trying to fight the hold. Angle pulled and yanked on the ankle until Nagata eventually tapped out.

Afterward, both men remained on the mat. Nagata was checked on by his trainers while Angle came to his knees in sheer exhaustion. Angle lifted his arms in victory before having his hand raised. Nagata eventually reached his feet. Tenay said Angle has defeated people like Brock Lesnar, Steve Austin, The Rock, Sting, Big Show, and Samoa Joe. Now, he can add the name Yuji Nagata. As usual, TNA trying to be relevant by referencing other people's wrestlers. Angle and Nagata then embraced in center ring to acknowledge each other. Angle embraced Nagata and told him he was awesome.

WINNER: Kurt Angle in 21:00 to retain the IWGP 3rd Title. Excellent pro wrestling match. Both men seemed to meet a mutual style point where Angle did more of an American main event heavyweight match, while Nagata used more MMA-style submission holds and strikes. They worked well off each other by incorporating the two styles into the match. It was a different type of match where the crowd reaction wasn't a focal point of the TV presentation, unlike the American style of incorporating the crowd into how well a match comes across. This was just two men having a great pro wrestling match independent of whether the fans were cheering or silent. (****)TNA

Wrestlemania coming to Arizona in 2010?!!

The Arizona Republic reports today that WWE officials have been in talks with representatives from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., home of the Arizona Cardinals NFL team, for WrestleMania 2010 to be held in the stadium. WWE has already toured the retractable roof stadium, which can hold up to 73,000 people, to evaluate the possibility of running WrestleMania there.

Global Spectrum, which promotes big concert and sporting events, including WrestleMania 24 in Orlando this year, is working on a written proposal for WWE and Univ. of Phoenix stadium officials. A decision on the bid isn't expected for a few months. "It's certainly not a done deal but we've had some good dialogue," said Global Spectrum spokesman Scott Norton.

The first reports of Mania being held outside of Phoenix came when current Phoenix Coyotes coach and legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky was photographed wearing a "WrestleMania 2010: Destruction in the Desert" promotional t-shirt. Gretzky said he liked the shirt, so he took it home.

WWE Smackdown Results: 1-18-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (direct link to Park's review). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1- THE GREAT KHALI vs. FINLAY

They showed Finlay rescuing Hornswoggle from Khali this past Monday night. They did some comedy as the bell rang, with Hornswoggle getting the best of Ranjin Singh at ringside. Finlay backed Singh down as they took another break.

Finlay hammered away upon return, but Khali clotheslined him down. Big back elbows in the corner from Khali. Finlay was thrown outside and Khali followed. Khali missed a chop and hit his hand on the post. Khali, from the floor, chopped Finlay, who was on the apron. One-armed bodyslam by Khali. The nerve hold was applied. As Hornswoggle distracted the ref, Finlay nailed Khali with a low-blow. Singh grabbed the shillaleigh so Finlay couldn’t use it, and tossed it up the aisle. Hornswoggle, in response, pulled out a bigger one. Finlay tossed Singh out of the ring and Khali hit the double-handed chokeslam, then put Finlay in the head vice for the victory.

WINNER: Khali, at 11:03.

2- DEUCE ‘N DOMINO vs. JIMMY WANG YANG & SHANNON MOORE

Yang worked a side headlock, then tagged Moore. Dropkick by Moore earned a one-count. Standing side-kick to the gut by Deuce, who then tagged Domino. Moore low-bridged the ropes and Domino went over the top. Domino worked over Moore after he hesitated on a move because Cherry was in the way. Deuce hung Moore on the rope and Domino came off with a forearm to the back. Domino missed a corner charge and Moore tagged Yang. Deuce broke up a pin attempt but Moore landed a flying headscissor to dispose of Deuce. Meanwhile, Yang hit a moonsault on Domino for the win.

WINNERS: Yang & Moore at 6:39.

3- BATISTA vs. MARK HENRY

Henry, in a lock-up battle, powered Batista to the ground. Shoulder tackle took down the former champ again. Henry got cocky and pie-faced Batista. The Animal went on a rampage and kicked Henry out of the ring. Henry turned the tide and whipped Batista into the steps, then drove his spine into the ring post. Vader bomb by Henry missed, as Batista got his knees up. Henry missed a charge and Batista hit a spear for a two-count. Another spear, then Henry back-dropped out of a Batista Bomb. He missed a splash, allowing Batista to hit a spinebuster for the win.

WINNER: Batista at 5:00.

4- MICHELLE MCCOOL vs. LAYLA

Layla’s entrance walk is almost as exaggerated as Vince’s at this point. Headlock take-down from Michelle. Sunset flip by Layla but she couldn’t hang on and Michelle met her with a dropkick. Michelle missed a charge and Layla hit some kicks to the leg. She continued to work on the left leg. Vicious chops highlighted Michelle’s comeback. She then hit an impressive double-underhook face-plant for the pin.

WINNER: McCool at 3:53.

5- EDGE & CHAVO GUERRERO vs. CM PUNK & REY MYSTERIO

Chain wrestling to start from Chavo and CM. Punk hit a boot to the face and tagged Rey in. After Chavo gave him a European uppercut, the tag was made to Edge. Rey hit a head-scissor, then set Edge up for the 619. Edge got out of the way, but was kicked off the apron by Punk. Chavo dove at Punk but missed, going over the top rope. Rey and CM hit stereo dives through the ropes on their opponents, sending the show to a break.

Edge and Punk were in and Edge was laying the boots to Punk. Tag to Chavo, who did the same. Punk fought back against Edge with chops. Edge threw Punk to the mat, and he slid shoulder-first into the ring post. Chavo tagged in and went right to work on the vulnerable body part. Eventually, Rey got the hot tag and went to work with a flurry of offense on Chavo. He hit the 619, but Edge nailed Rey in the leg with a chair to draw the DQ.

WINNERS: Punk & Rey by DQ at 10:48.

Where is Cena?

Cena was injured October 1 when he tore his pectoral muscle completely from the bone. He had surgery done immediately and will be out anywhere from 7 months to a year, though he did make an appearnace at the annual WWE Tribute to the Troops Show in December. While there were rumors he may make it back by Wrestlemania, most likley it won't be until the summer until he returns to the WWE.

WWE RAW Results: 1-21-08

Results courtesy of PWTorch.com (direct link to Caldwell's report). Condensed to in-ring results only.

1 -- MR. KENNEDY vs. SHAWN MICHAELS

The crowd was hot to start, with an "H-B-K" chant. The arena is bathed in red light, almost like Kane's ring entrance. Wrestlers take heed: get your tan lines right, as both men's color tone stood out in the crisp video presentation. As for the match, they went back and forth to start things off. Kennedy placed Michaels's back across his knee and stretched him while talking some trash. Kennedy took his eye off the ball temporarily, giving Michaels his opening to make his comeback with a hard chop. They went into a standing exchange of chops before Michaels nailed a flying forearm and kipped up for a big reaction. Michaels hit an atomic drop, then he dropped an elbow from the top turnbuckle. Michaels started to tune up the band, but Kennedy saw it coming and quickly ducked to the floor. Michaels didn't waste any time nailing a flip dive onto Kennedy on the floor. Cut to a break.

Back from break, Kennedy was in control of the match. He lined up Michaels's head in the corner and nailed a charging boot to the head. Kennedy's eyes rolled a little to show how much he enjoyed the impact. Kennedy then made a cover, but it was good for a two count only. Ross rhetorically asked how that boot coming to Michaels's head looked in HD. Kennedy then sent Michaels upside down in the corner, but Michaels came right off the corner with a burst of energy to clothesline Kennedy square in center ring. Nice spot. Both men recovered to their knees, with Kennedy landing a head butt. He then stalked Michaels for an STO, but Michaels elbowed out. Kennedy rammed him to the corner, though, revealing a little blood around his eyebrow.

Kennedy was a little loosey-goosey as he took Michaels up top for an attempted superplex, but Michaels blocked and punched him down to the mat. Michaels then came off the top with another elbow drop, but Kennedy pulled his knees up just in time to block the hold. Michaels staggered out of the corner, and Kennedy hit a forward roll for a close nearfall and a gasp from the crowd. Suddenly, Michaels went for Sweet Chin Music, but Kennedy moved just in time. He couldn't bail from the ring, though, and Michaels went for his new submission hold. Kennedy pushed him away, though. Michaels then backed up and smashed Kennedy square in the jaw with Sweet Chin Music. Michaels made the cover near the ropes and scored a pin for the win.

WINNER: Michaels in 15:00. Excellent opening match in HD. Good two-part story, with the opening miss on the superkick coming in play at the end when Kennedy couldn't slip out of the ring to escape the second superkick. (***1/4)

2 -- Women's champ BETH PHOENIX vs. MICKIE JAMES -- non-title match

Mickie ducked under Beth early, then landed a Thesz Press for a series of right hand blows. Mickie went for ten punches in the corner, but Beth turned her around on the apron. Beth then smashed Mickie with a knee to the face, taking Mickie to the floor. Beth then rammed Mickie back-first into the ring. Back in the ring, Mickie rolled up Beth and got a handful of trunks for a nearfall. They did a standing forearm exchange, leading to Mickie nailing a flying forearm. Mickie kicked Beth in the gut, then went for a lift-up DDT, but Beth hung her across the top rope. Beth then transitioned into her fisherman buster suplex for the win. Afterward, Mickie slammed her first on the mat in frustration. She choked back tears while Beth stood confidently on the outside.

WINNER: Beth in 4:00. Good singles action. Nice story of Mickie becoming frustrated following another setback against Beth. Whether they follow up or not, well, that remains to be seen. (*1/4)

3 -- FINLAY & HORNSWOGGLE vs. THE HIGHLANDERS (ROBBIE & RORY)

Finlay didn't waste any time going after Rory, but Robbie got a knee in the back. Rory wanted a little fun with Hornswoggle, but Hornswoggle ran through the legs giving Finlay an opening for a forearm smash. Finlay then gave Rory a Celtic Cross and Horny came off the top with a tadpole splash for the easy win. Finlay and Hornswoggle then pushed Robbie over the top rope to the floor. They showed a kid in the crowd wearing a Horny green derby. Nice. Ross plugged Finlay vs. Khali in a Belfast Brawl on Smackdown. Finlay and Hornswoggle proceeded to do an Irish jig, complete with toe-to-heel tap from Finlay.

WINNERS: Finlay & Hornswoggle in 1:00. I'd like to think Highlanders are capable of more, but alas, just a squash to plug Finlay's match on Smackdown. (1/2*)

4 -- BRIAN KENDRICK vs. UMAGA -- qualifying match for Kendrick

Kendrick tried to work on Umaga early, but Umaga stood his ground and nailed an uppercut. Kendrick came back with a dropkick from the top, but Umaga only rocked back on his heels. Kendrick nailed a round of kicks to the head, but Umaga didn't move. Kendrick went for a running headstart, but Umaga hit the sickest Samoan Drop of all-time - he chucked Kendrick into the air and fell back into a Samoan Drop all in one motion. Oh man. Umaga with the Samoan Spike to the throat for the win.

WINNER: Umaga in 2:00. What a freakin' Samoan Drop. Poor Kendrick. At least he got some meaningful TV time. (* for the Drop)

5 -- HARDCORE HOLLY (w/Cody Rhodes) vs. CARLITO (w/Santino Marella and Maria)

The seventh-quarter-hour filler match started with a waist lock into a take down by Holly for a nearfall. Carlito suddenly exploded out of the corner with a left-arm clothesline for a nearfall. Ross and Lawler engaged in a conversation on Ric Flair's career-threatening match at the Rumble. Ross said there's no way you can go through your career without losing. Well, unless you're a rookie on the Patriots this year and you retire after the Super Bowl if the Pats win. But, I digress. Holly snapped back on Carlito with hard chops before executing a suplex for a nearfall. Carlito walked into an Alabama Slam attempt, but Santino hopped on the apron to distract Holly. Cody KO'ed Santino, but Carlito nailed the Backstabber from behind on Holly. He pinned Holly for the win.

WINNER: Carlito in 3:00. Basic TV match. Not much to it. Carlito is so up-and-down that it's hard to get behind him as a character. Hopefully Santino's charisma and Maria's eventual Playboy push will rub off on Carlito. (1/2*)

6 -- TRIPLE H RUNS THE GAUNTLET V.576

First out to face Hunter was big Snitsky. Snitsky tried to eliminate Hunter within the first minute, but Hunter grabbed the top rope to hold on. Snitsky missed with a big boot near the ropes and crotched himself. Hunter then clotheslined Snitsky over the top rope. Out you go in 2:00.

Regal gritted his teeth on stage, then introduced the second opponent: Mark Henry. Henry took his time coming to the ring to make Hunter wait, then he jogged the final few feet to meet a right hand from Hunter. Henry came back with a big shoulder block, though. He tried to chuck Hunter out, but Hunter held onto the top rope to keep himself in the ring. Henry missed with a corner splash, then Hunter tried to lift him up for a scoop slam, but Henry fell right on top of him. Ouch. Hunter struggled to catch his breath, then Henry splashed him in the corner. Henry measured Hunter, but Hunter ducked and Henry went over the top rope. Henry out in 5:00.

Regal gritted his teeth again, then waved off his final opponent. Regal threw off his jacket and charged the ring. He went right after Hunter with left hand strikes and knees to the face. Regal tried to dump out Hunter, but Hunter held the top rope. Hunter came back with a Double A spinebuster, then he picked up Regal and chucked him right over the top rope.

The bell sounded, giving Hunter the victory and Rumble spot. Hunter posed in the ring while Ross hyped Hunter's aspirations to become WWE champion. Regal then screamed and shouted in frustration from ringside.

WINNER: Triple H in 6:00. At least the didn't pin Snitsky and Henry in a total of five minutes, so it wasn't as blatant as previous Hunter-kills-the-gauntlet matches. Nice set-up for Hunter to get back in the Rumble and pose the question of whether he can win the Rumble. (*)

NWA Southern Pro Wrestling - 1st ever NWA Continental Champ crowned!!

Results courtesy of Jeffrey T. Capo: Senior Referee - NWA Championship Wrestling via ComicBloc Forum: Official Wrestling Thread Post #13,010 (must be ComicBloc forum member to access).

The crowd at the Hertford Co. HS was actually larger than the Sept. show and this show had the threat of 2-4in of snow/slush. Decent show that ran a bit too long in my opinion.

1-Butch Barretta b Babyface Bertucci in what may have been both guys' first match ever, they are VCW trainees

Interview w/Sean Denny, Damien Wayne & Big Lou, both men relinquished their SPW & NWA-VA titles over to NWA official Jeff Capo. The titles are now sealed and replaced by the beautiful NWA Continental championship. DW pissed off manager Big Lou by giving him the night off and promising a fair match. The best of 3 stipulations were revealed as Submission, Impact move (piledriver vs. Denny Driver), Dog Collar match.

2-Marky D b Vulstag (w/Pastor Ray Rouse) in a fight

3-Grail b Krotch (w/Pastor Ray Rouse) to retain Alpha title

4-Wrong Crowd (NWA-East's Paul Atlas & Brian Anthony w/Curtis Stevenson) b Old School Empire (w/Shy) to win the NWA No. American tag titles. PQ blamed Shy afterwards for him getting thrown into a chair that Shy handed him earlier.

5-Q-Sic b Phil Brown

6-NWA-Underground b Brandon Day/Xsiris--Kameo tried to lure Xsiris over to her side pre-match by promising lots of money and "other favors". He refused. Late in the match Xsiris took Kameo to the locker room to prevent her interference. Kameo returned with the huge Janus, who she recruited out of a tag match last SPW show, Xsiris proceeded to turn on Day and the four of them proceeded to lay a beating on him that lasted a good 5 minutes.

7-Damien Wayne won the NWA Continental title winning 2/3 falls from Sean Denny. DW won the submission match with some sort of arm/shoulder/head submission that I can't recall. Denny won fall 2 by hitting a tombstone (apparently the object was to hit the move only, not score a pin). DW won a bloody dog collar 3rd fall. Each fall went about 10-12 minutes. Mike Booth came out after and Denny shockingly accepted his hand shake, only to be jumped by Booth, Big Lou, and Wayne. The Old School Empire is back together. Jeff Capo came out with the shocking revelation that new SPW commissioner BABY DOLL was on the phone and watching the show from a mysterious internet connection. She demanded that DW put the title up next show vs. MANNY FERNANDEZ or he would be stripped of the title, suspended, and lose his world title shot at Adam Pearce. That match will take place 3/29 in Ahoskie, NC
