new to KOF on ps2

I am new to KOF and was wondering which ones are the best for the ps2 if any. I use to play KOF 95 or 96 awhile back on my saturn while i was in Japan and enjoyed the game a lot but ended up leaving the game back in Japan. I fell out of fighters and am starting to get back into them again. I can't afford an MVS at the moment and was looking at the various US released KOF games for the ps2 and was thinking of picking one up and just wanted to see where I should start.

- KOF Maximum Impact
- KOF 2002/2003 combo pack
- KOF Maximum Impact 2 (or KOF 2006 as called in US)

my suggestion:
Sell your PS2 and all the games, use the money to buy a Neo Geo. Get any KOF cart, they are all great if you ask me.

edit: 1 more thing to think about. 1 day your PS2 will break. Neo Geo is a lot more durable.

Only problem is my love for shmups. I do plan on getting an MVS, just not for probably another 6 months. Basically jsut looking for a way to enjoy and get into KOF until I get an MVS.

Basically the only ones thats out for the US market for KOF's are either Maximum Impact, KOF 94 rebout, and KOF 2000-2003. In Japan everything else is being released like the Orochi saga, Maximum Impact 2, and Soon to be KOFXI. The NESTs saga is supposed to be released soon as well but no confirmation on the release date. If it came out for the PS2 I'd just get it anyway, but if you think about it your spending the same exact price you could be spending on any mvs cart.

KOF 2002/2003 (PS2)

All the others are imports.

Once the NESTs series is released I'd rather get that, The PSX version of KOF-99 from avertec has too many load times and is rather slow for my taste.

Went to Play-Asia.com and the NESTS Series release date is set for June 22, 2006along with KOFXI, though its strange that I couldn't find anymore information about it even on the Japanese SNKP site.

AGREED , and if you liked those 2, kof XI is like a cross breed for 03/02 imo. IMPORT NOW!

If your PS2 can play JPN games then your good.

KoF94 Rebout(you can play it rebout or the original)
KoF Orochi 95-97(pretty much arcade perfect)
KoF Nests 99-01(not out yet, but judging from the Orochi collection, these should be as good)
KoF2003(great port, can be played w/ the new stages or original arcade)

If your PS2 can only play US games

KoF2000/2001 2 pack(played it a few years ago, I remember them being good if not perfect)
KoF 2002/2003 2 pack(2003 as good as the JPN version, 2002 was good if not perfect)

These 2 games are a tough find now, but you can get lucky.

KoF XI will definitely be the best.

Prior to that, I like playing 2k2 most on the PS2.
