SNK Neo*Geo is in business. They need to make money. What does this mean in this day and age?
Cross licensing. I thought we already had discussed this before as a good idea.

If SNK games start coming out on other systems besides the Neo that means SNK will make money and that means the company we all love wil be able to continue to produce great games.

You forget guys, SNK needs to pay the bills and sadly the Neo*Geo alone ain't cuttin it.

You see, this is why I think you're smart....

Anyway, there are no loading times on CvS2 on PS2. I'm sorry but there are none, the game is fast as all hell. So don't sit there and tell me otherwise, because I've played both versions....

Any next gen system would handle a Neo port just fine, but KOF on GC? Hell no, I have a GC and love it to death, but god damn I can't imagine playing a 2D fighter on that controller. It'd be hell. And the DC is kinda dead, so there won't be as many sales as there would be on PS2. I mean I love the DC as much as the next guy, but even though the truth hurts we gotta accept it, the DC ain't getting many more games *god it hurts to say that*.

Ah well, it can't be helped. Just cause Sony is winning the console war and most stupid people like it, everyone who's "hardcore"' has to hate it.

Peace

i see what u mean but certain games
shouldn't be released to crapy systems
like PS2. Why haven't KOF 2k been ported
or MS3, theres money to be made there
too to for snk neo geo, MSx is not
cutting it for PSX.

But you see, for a niche game (and make no mistake about it, these are niche games) to sell well, you need a very very large installed base (ie. A lot of people have to own the system your selling it for) and no one, and I mean no one comes close to Sony on this. And don't tell me that it's a crappy system cause it can easily handle a Neo game, and it also has the best looking games out there right now (FFX, MGS2, Devil May Cry). Sorry man, you ain't beating this system when it comes time to pick one to put a Neo port on!

Exactly. SNK needs to do whatever they can to get those bills payed and to prosper. Hell, multiconsole support wouldn't hurt either. They need to release KOF for all 3 systems. Even though i like PS2 and Gamecube and i'm not the biggest Xbox supporter i wouldn't mind it being on it cuz that means SNK will make some serious cheese. Multiconsole is the way SNK should go.

Why the hell is everyone judging the PS2s capabilities by those of its predecessor? Last time I checked, they were NOT the same machine. Maybe you just want SNK to die again?

Ok just so people know where I stand. I'm not out to say kill the Neo even tho the hardware is older than dirt, Ya just gotta think from a finaical point of view.

If SNK can continue to make games for the Neo, then good for them. The main thing is guys, We're a small ass fucking userbase compared to people who own a PlayStation 2, X-Box or Gamecube.

Soak up that truth of information and think about it. How can SNK make more money?

Put shit out on other systems and get their name back out there like they did in the old days. Hell most of you guys should have already figured it out by now that Capcom vs SNK & Capcom vs SNK 2 have made the Neo*Geo a more wanted system because people see all these new people and go.

Who the fuck is this Iori bitch and why is he and Kyo flamin all over each others nutz?

So what happens?

People research, Find out some shit that most of us knew all this time. SNK gets popular again and they make money. Some of you peeps don't get it how damn lucky we are to even get new Neo*Geo games in this day and fucking age.

The most I ever ask to get out of a console system is 5 good fucking years. That's it. The Neo*Geo has damn near givin us 12!!!!

When I look at that, That shows that SNK cares about it's customer base a shitload more than Sony, Nintendo, Sega & Mircosoft *Sorry Jhendrix I know you love em :D * ever did.

Now that SNK is back you expect them to keep making games for only one console system?

That's just asking to be shot in the foot. SNK's best bet, work on multiple platforms and stick to the Neo*Geo in support of their fans.

If you can dig this viewpoint, I promise you that SNK will last longer and won't die out like they did before.

Show your support not just for the Neo*Geo but the company that brought it to us.......S N K :)

first of all I was talking about PS2's look on
2D animations, yes they do have good 3D games,
I do like some 3D games myself. There good but once again too much loading. PS2 can not make an exact replica of a 2D game from neo geo. If they do, its always missing something. Not to come up as a dick but this is what I think. I know DC is going out but why not go out with a bang!. PS should just once again stick with there 3D specialty because thats what they want to be known as. DC was good with both forms.

Dude,
As much as I'm for perfect ports of games myself let me lay out a nugget of truth.

It doesn't matter to the everyday Joe Blow gamer out there. Most of the peeps who will play that game are playing something totally new.

They play Haohmaru and go..

wow I remember him from Samurai Shodown

They get ahold of Iori and go off with...

Man this character is cool!!! I wonder where he came from?

That's about the gist right there. I mean shit Slug X on the Playstation sold fairly well and why? Because it was a classic game which word of mouth got around that it rocked.

Sure it's missing assloads of frames and animation but for people who want to play some Metal Slug at home, It's perfect when your wallet isn't as strapped as some peeps are here with a Neo.

Bottom line, I played Capcom vs SNK 2 on both Dreamcast and PlayStation 2. They are virtually identical ports and they play exctaly *repeats* excatly the same. :D

I have to agree 100% with balladstar. He's right in saying that the PS2 is poorly equipped to handle 2D games. The reason is due to the crappy design of the console, with only 4MB VRAM as opposed to the DC's 8MB VRAM. That, among other reasons (including the overall better design of the DC) is why the DC handles 2D games better than the PS2. Sony blew the design of their flagship console, underequipped it with Video RAM, and once again ignored 2D games in the overall design of their console. Its embarassing really, and its why you read reviews that mention the "typical low-res PS2 textures", something that in this generation console should not exist. And, its another reason why Sony is already grumbling about the PS3, tacit admission that they did a poor design of the PS2 thus substantially shortening its overall lifespan.

True, the PS2 has a much larger market share, and I'm not arguing with the logic of putting games out on the PS2 due to that. I'm just saying, the DC could certainly handle 2D games better, and has shown that many times already. XBox and GC are of course leagues beyond the PS2, and in time both with easily surpass it in quality and quantity of games . . . :)

Hey now I'm not knocking on which version look prettier cause I love my Dreamcast version of the game more.

Sides the PS2 hardware is designed to spool it's shit directly off the disc. So I can see why Sony once again *dumbasses that they are* Could give two shits less about having a lot of ram.

In as far as all 3 systems go they still have a long ways to go before they can even think of surpassing the Neo*Geo in terms of customer support. HooHaa!!! :D

I think Muliplatform is the best option for SNK NEOGEO and Sun amusement....

***NEWSFLASH***

THE DREAMCAST IS DEAD!!!

Puting a game on this system would be suicide. Have you been to any store that used to/in the process of getting rid of Dreamcast stuff? It's all on sale for either $9.99 or $19.99 the games that are not on sale are just sitting there because they are available on another system or people just don't know what the hell the game is (Mark of the Wolves).

People in th US have forgoten what SNK is, they don't even remember what the KOF series is.

I do hope the game comes out for other systems besides the Neo Geo, but to bring a game out on an already dead system doesn't say much for the marketing tactics of the company. SNK needs to reach as many people posible and right now that is the PS2.

That is all,

Criterionradiohead ;)

Don't get me wrong, I want SNK to make money. It's just I don't think enough people will buy this game on PS2 to make it a success. I wouldn't want SNK to make games they can't sell. You know the game will be slagged off by every magazine in the country cause 'it doesn't make use of the power of PS2' shit. The Dreamcast would be the best place to port it. That or GBA.

Load times on CvS2 for PS2? Barely. There is a few but they are pretty fast and once the game is really started (fighting) the matches keep coming with pretty much unnoticable load time...

I think SNK should release KOF2K1 for multiple platforms.

I've read several comments along the lines of '2D is dead in the mind of the consumer' in this thread, but I believe that's only true of the North American market. In the rest of the world, as so many people are quick to point out, KOF is *the* fighting game series. Everything else is considered a step below. A multi-platform KOF2K1 release would probably be very successful in a global sense.

SNK died once because they didn't make enough money. Why didn't they make money? Marketing was one reason, and also because they relied solely on a flagging arcade market to butter their bread. Capcom is a huge company with a surging pulse because they develop for the home console market as well as the arcade scene. Capcom has even announced that they're scaling back their arcade development because it's not as profitable in this day and age. That's smart business.

A KOF2K1 port can't possibly be as good as the real thing, that being MVS or home cart, but it's better than nothing, and later port efforts (DC JAP Last Blade 2, KOF '99 Evolution, KOF '98, Garou) have shown that their porting crew are FINALLY getting the hang of this translation business. How can SNK hope to penetrate the home market if the only people they can sell to are neo geo owners and dwindling arcade goers? That kind of logic is beyond retarted, and is what put them in the poor house to begin with.

As long as they're putting out a home cart, every neo owner has the opportunity to get the arcade perfect version of the game. I don't see why Neo owners should complain about ports. Buy the MVS or home cart version and let the neo-geo impaired buy the port of their choice. That way everyone can enjoy the games (which is really what counts in the end) and SNK vibrantly lives again.

My point oh two.

I'm not against ports, far from it. My point is few people would buy it on PS2. At the moment next-gen consoles are having a 'Graphics War', trying to lure the customer with eye candy. A perfect port of a game made on a much older system will recieve no end of slanging. Look at sega games like Crazy Taxi or 18 Wheeler. Every freakin PS2 goes on about how 'more could be done with the graphics' and give the games lower scores.

If SNK want to crack the mass market then it's time they developed using other systems than MVS. Companies like Capcom for go the cost of making new hardware by using other manufactures hardware, which makes it cheaper to make a game.
Some titles developed just on PS2 or Gamecube hardware would start things rolling and releasing MVS back catalogue ports on GBA would be the best move IMO (GBA METAL SLUG!)

I don't think so. I think quite a few people would buy KOF2K1 for PS2 worldwide. It wouldn't sell Metal Gear Solid II numbers or anything like that, but it would still sell decently. If marketed properly (something else SNK didn't seem to know how to do very well before), it could actually do quite well. Of course, unless the game actually comes out for PS2 that issue will never be settled so we'll just have to wait and see, right ;) ?

But one would be mistaken to think ports of MVS stuff alone will save SNK from a second death. They're going to have to do a lot of original console development as well, just like Capcom does. So on that count, I totally agree.

Cool thread.

bump. Oh and we all know the PS2 sucks in general, 2D games will be poor on it. Even 3D games aren't that great. Thank GOD we now have a REAL console, the XBox . . . and lots of PS2 games will get MUCH BETTER versions on the X . . . like Spy Hunter, Burnout, Onimusha, SC2, etc. etc. . . . bye bye PS2!!

Ok lets do this...I started before but IE crashed so I let it go but after reading all this crap I can't help myself.

LET"S POINT OUT THE OBVIOUS: The PS2 with it's "crappy" 4mb VRAM can easily and I mean really easily handle KOF2k1. Arcade perfect whatever you want. Hell all they have to do is write a version of mame for it, stream the game right so the load is minimal (which it will be cause the friggin drive isn't 2X anymore, god it's amazing how ignorant some people are) and bam you got perfect KOF, or any MVS game. Any new system can easily handle it through emulation, just like a PC can. Plus it's specifically coded for the PS2 or whatever so it'll run even better than a generically coded version of MAME. Hell I can load mame up on a P2 350, w/ 128Mb RAM and a 4Mb Savage video card w/ video out and I'll have perfect Neo games running on a TV and have absolutely no difference. So DON"T SIT THERE AND TELL ME THAT 4MB VRAM WILL HOLD BACK A PERFECT NEO PORT. If CvS2 doesn't have loading time with just as many sprites and then 3D backgrounds and textures on top of that to load, then I think KOF will do JUST FINE on a PS2.

NOW CHIMP, I'M NOT LETTING YOU GET AWAY WITH THIS PS2 BASHING....

4Mb VRAM. Yeah small, but guess what, GameCube has less than that. And the PS2 was designed years before GC or XBox, and it was here first. Now also, that 4Mb is a FRAME BUFFER, and when done correctly textures can be stored in main RAM if necessary and swapped in when they are needed. Easy enough to do. XBox has a variable amount of memory (a unified memory archetecture meaning it can split up the ram as a game see's fit), which is both a good and a bad thing at the same time. Now the PS2 was designed from the ground up, chips and all, which means that the full potential is unlocked gradually, meaning things get better and better, the XBox uses off the shelf stuff and it will also get better with time, it won't improve as much as the PS2. Both system's design's have ups and downs, that's a design issue that I'd be happy to debate in another thread.
My point is this: Best looking/Playing 3D games of the year? FFX, MGS2, Devil May Cry, GTA3, GT3. Notice a trend? Yeah that's right all on PS2. What does XBox have? DOA3 (DOA2 w/ prettier graphics) and Halo? Halo is your killer app? A F*#$@ First Person Shooter on a console? The PC version will kick all ass over the XBox one, and let's just say that it's not a system seller. Now what's coming out in the future? I don't see too much XBox wise, but I see plenty on the PS2, Maximo, Onimusha 2, DMC2, XenoSaga, FF/Square RPG's. And here's something else chimp, cause I've had enough reading the same "only 4mb VRAM" thing, Of all the consoles the XBox looks like it's going to die. I hate to say it, I'm a MS shareholder, I wanna make money, but I look at it and it doesn't look good. It doesn't have the highlight Japanese developers in line. Who does? Sony. With that market lead and everything (you know Square and Namco exclusives, that kind of thing) they have the Japanese Market in a death grip. XBox ranked second to last over Japanese game companies who will support the system (ranked just above the dead DC). So I'm sorry, but you're dreams of Sony loosing this is really really going to fall apart. I'll watch in 2 or 3 years, in between threads of KOF2k3 vs KOF98 I'll have a thread by you over how stupid the mass market is for making PS2 the market leader, and they're all just stupid fanboy's and the market has gone to shit cause it's all mainstream now. I can see the excuses coming. With this market lead I don't see Sony loosing. Sorry man, the best games will be on a system with only 4Mb VRAM....

Peace

I gotta go with JHendrix's assessment of the situation as far as the console wars go. On top of all the more technically precise information he's given, I have to go with the common man's reasoning and say that I only know one person that owns an X-Box (almost everyone I know owns a PS2) and I don't know anyone that even WANTS an X-Box, and most of my friends are hardcore video gamers with the cash to satisfy their hobby's needs.

That may change if X-Box starts putting out any good games (DOA 3, as much as I like it, will NOT sell me an X-Box and I think Halo is pure crap; yes, I've played through some of it), but with the headstart Sony has in both game development AND market penetration, even Microsoft is going to have a hard time getting caught up. To the average person, there are just TOO MANY options right now, and in this sagging economy people are going to try to spend the least amount of money to get the greatest variety of options. Sony has the advantage in this respect; backwards compatibility with PS1, no extra peripherals required to play DVDs, more compact size, better game selection, larger game selection. Additionally, the PS2 had a year head start on X-Box and great games like MGS II and FFX are coming out for PS2 right when Microsoft needed Sony to drop the ball in that respect.

Microsoft may have created a great not-so-little system but any line of thought that implies the X-Box is going to conquer the console world is, at this point, suspect. If X-Box starts jumping through the proverbial hoops and getting attention for doing things the PS2 can't do THAT JOE AVERAGE CAN UNDERSTAND, it will increase its value and become more desired.

All this talk about technical specifications is nice, but in the end it all comes down to what it means to Joe Average. Ram, texture mapping, anti aliasing...none of these things mean anything to the majority of consumers. Games and multi-functionality are what count the most, and in that respect X-Box is the proverbial one legged man in the ass kicking contest; it can't compete.

I have higher predictions for Gamecube, which doesn't have DVD capabilities but is a hundred bucks cheaper and has TREMENDOUS brand loyalty. Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, Metroid, Starfox...these names are all industry staples, and that means Gamecube will sell systems, especially since it's cheaper than either PS2 or X-Box. X-Box doesn't even have brand loyalty going for it; Microsoft doesn't have a console game market history to draw from. Will Gamecube do as well as PS2? I don't think so, but I think it has sales advantages the X-Box and Microsoft are going to have to earn in the marketplace.

Perhaps the most telling barometer of X-Box's chances lie in recent statements made by representatives of Enix and Square, Japan's two largest RPG developers, and companies Microsoft is going to need support from to survive in the land of the rising sun. Enix said they have no plans to develop for X-Box, but that may change. However, Dragonquest games are unlikely to show up on it. Square was even less encouraging about it: they basically said that after looking at how the market is shaping up and projections for the future, they will not be doing anything for the X-Box. Statements like this do not inspire confidence.

Again, not debating X-Box's power. It's got it in spades. But it has so much working against it that it'll have to be a mutant to survive the natural selection process.

We all knew that KOF2K1's release on other platforms was not a guarantee. We're at the point where we're debating whether or not it would be a wise move.

And we're also talking about X-Box, PS2 and GC competing against one another :p !

Hey JHENDRIX, sorry I was just bumping MANY MANY threads after "The Hobbit" spammed the forums last night (they had 4 pages + worth of old threads resurrected by the time they were shut down), and I thought I'd get a humerous poke in at the PS2 . . . just for fun. So I hope you didn't get too upset, I was mostly joking.
