It borrows a lot from, what I consider to be, better Capcom beat em ups than FF1 (i.e. AVP, CapCommando, Battle Circuit, KOTRound etc).
FF1 has teh iconic status though...
I don't fully agree. It has running like Captain Commando, and special moves like AVP, but the macro style is completely different. FF3 may have innovated the use of a super bar.
I don't see the KOTR comparison, and FF3 pre-dates Battle Circuit by 2 years.
Although FF3 has some sick combos, it's not a deep game. Final Fight certainly is, and holds it's iconic status for a plethora of reasons.
EDIT: Denjin Makai/Ghost Chaser Densei had the super bar in 94, but it functions like Art of Fighting. FF3's super bar is Super Turbo style.
