I was disappointed, Perfect Blue displays some sharp insights into the dark side of the idol business, yet sacrifices them to a rather dumb and contrived whodunit at the end. After spending its first half exploring the way in which wealthy pop group owners exploit their girls, whom they regard as little more than pieces of meat, the movie decides to degenerate into a run-of-the-mill stalker story. Too bad.
Still a watchable effort, but it felt like a big chance was missed here.
