I'm doing computer searching and came across this...

Intel Inside Celeron

What the heck is a Celeron? How does is differ from a Pentium?

Would this thing be able to play a game like WarCraft 3, even though it's not a Pentium?

I had thought the Celeron was the "cheaper" version of the Pentium that had a smaller cache or something.

Here are the most important similarities and differences between the Pentium 4 and the Celeron chips coming out today:
Core - The Celeron chip is based on a Pentium 4 core.

Cache - Celeron chips have less cache memory than Pentium 4 chips do. A Celeron might have 128 kilobytes of L2 cache, while a Pentium 4 can have four times that. The amount of L2 cache memory can have a big effect on performance.

Clock speed - Intel manufactures the Pentium 4 chips to run at a higher clock speed than Celeron chips. The fastest Pentium 4 might be 60 percent faster than the fastest Celeron.

Bus speed - There are differences in the maximum bus speeds that the processors allow. Pentium 4s tend to be about 30 percent faster than Celerons.
When you sort all this out and compare the two chips side by side, it turns out that a Celeron and a Pentium 4 chip running at the same speed are different beasts. The smaller L2 cache size and slower bus speeds can mean serious performance differences depending on what you want to do with your computer. If all you do is check e-mail and browse the Web, the Celeron is fine, and the price difference can save you a lot of money. If you want the fastest machine you can buy, then you need to go with the Pentium 4 to get the highest clock speeds and the fastest system bus.

Those crappy processors suck. They are basically strip downed Pentium 3 processors with none of its special features. Get a Pentium or an Athlon instead.

Well I don't want the best machine out there. I can't afford that.

But I do want a new computer, and I don't PC game much, but I'd like to be able to play Warcraft 3. The only other things I'd be using the comp for are for the internet and stuff. The only other PC game I play is StarCraft.

So, do you think this could play WarCraft 3? if it's powerful enough to play WC3, it will suit my needs.

yes it is, I have a celeron on a pc i gave to my sister and it works great. Don't worry about what others say, its a good processor for a good price.

If Warcraft 3 is the the only PC game your going to play, then go ahead, you should get it, it will play Warcraft since you already know its a modified Pentium.

It all depends on what you're using the computer for. If the only games you're playing are Warcraft3 and Starcraft (i.e. not brand-new hard-core 1st person shooters) and you're not using it for other intense tasks like video editing and graphic design you probably won't notice a difference at all.

Just my thoughts.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO

do NOT get the celeron.

they have the worst price/performace ratio.

in the 'budget' processor field, theres Intel Celeron and AMD Duron.

now, the fastest celeron is 2ghz. and its roughly $90. (online at pc stores...all prices from www.googlegear.com)

now, im pretty sure Duron is being phased out, because well, AMD's real processors cost less than Celerons!

you can get an AthlonXP 2100+ (its a 1.73 GHz processor, but basically the name is trying to tell you that Mhz speed doesnt matter anymore, so its as good as a 2.1 GHz P4) for only $90. and thats a REAL PROCESSOR!! its not the stripped down ghetto version. ITS REAL!

go for an athlon XP system...much better cost/performace ratio.

Don't listen to sonic1687, I had a celeron 633 and it ran awsome. I played so many games on that thing and it was a smooth-as-hell PC.

Well if your going to play warcraft 3 i would't worry so much about the processor, but the video card. I say atleast have a G-force 2 in there and you should be ok.

I have a celeron 500, it was awesome when I first got it. Its time for an upgrade. I'll probly get another celeron. AMD has compatability issues with some things. The celeron runs games just fine though. Unless you need 200fps at 1600x1200 on quake 3 I would go with the celeron.

I take that back. I'll go with a P4. There isnt much price difference. $25 between a p4 2g and a celeron 2g. And theres about 2000 points difference on 3dmark2001. For $25 its worth the gain in my opinion. For performance comparisons I use www.madonion.com and for prices check www.pricewatch.com You can get a p4 2.4 chip and board for $215.

yea, but with p4, you gotta get the RDRAM mobos. and then the RDRAM costs liek a jabillion dollars.

just get an AMD....

yea, but why would you get the ddr p4? the performance is so shitty in comparison to the sdr its not even funny.

Hmm aparently you dont read about new tech/computer stuff to often ?

SDram is absolute trash comparred to any DDR ram in terms of throughtput , and thats what counts when it comes to memory , just take a look at 1066 DDR ram , actually RDram was the top of the heap until the 1066 DDR chips came out.

And guess what ? DDR is cheap as hell too , but then again all memory is cheap these days.

As far as Celerons are concerened they really arent worth the money when you can get a lot more for you dollar performanse wise with even a slower P4 ,the L2 cache is really the heart of any Intell CPU , skimping there is like buying a new Corvette with with a 2 cylinder engine and the handling of a semi.

It will get you where you want to go but it wont be very fun and it will take a long time.
