Are there any noteworthy independent games, or homebrew games worth playing?

All the homebrew games for Neo Geo are either trying to copy another game, or are down-ports from modern systems.

Short answer, no

Hypernoid is a pretty good Breakout/Arkanoid style game. At some point, Final Vendetta & Battle Axe should be worth checking out.

Yes I suggest you only play regular Neo Geo games which are fully original and high quality like burning fight or riding hero
