I think Konami was pissed that it was costing so much money and taking so much time to make it, so they essentially "restructured" him out of the company.

I'm sure over the last few days they're regretting that decision.

Add the fact that Konami wants to focus more on pachinko games now.... and you have the death of the good old Konami that we knew. :(

Jesus, dude is 52. I can't even imagine making MG and MG2 back when I was his age.

And yes PW is amazing.

Lets not forget that most in Konami thought he wouldn't amount to anything. Funny how that works.

I love how he went all over Tokyo for the MGSV launch to sign autographs and write his name on all the store posters and marketing. Like a boss.

So what was the whole debacle between Kojima and Konami anyway? Why did they split? Didn't he even go into hiding or something
From what I've read so far is that Kojima "became too expensive" If you have the chance to see the blu ray that was included in MGS 4 limited edition it shows Kojima's behavior, he has this super human attention to detail, which I love as a gamer, but as businessman I could tell you that I wouldn't want to have him working in my company. Don't take me wrong because I love his games and snake eater is my favorite mgs, but having a guy pass by and say "I don't like that, meeting time, let's change that" it's not productive. I hate to see him go and I hate my business perspective, but it'stoday's videogame industry. Cheers everyone!

That was a pretty good video. The sad thing is that the kid passed away....way to young. Kojima leaving is probably best, Konami will still probably make mone, just not outside of Japan. God Bless the man for lovng his fans and knowing that he had to keep stepping his game up with every iteration. Loved 1, like the music in 2, loved 3, loved 4 and need to play through 5 when I have time.

I've always been surprised the the amount of content these games have had since I first played it on the NES.
The story has always been tough to follow and retain but it's been great seeing the gameplay advance over the years. Kojima will always be one of the giants to me.

I could understand that but doesn't Konami own MGS ? with all the high priced Licensed merch they do and could do more of don't they make their money back even if he is expensive and untamable? UNICLO was selling 40 dollar MGS shirts and hoodies. I think your probably right for the most part but it seems Konami just wants to redirect their business weather its financially a good move or not.

Agree with you. And I think this will be Konami's swan song (hopefullynot) on the videogame industry.

The future is PACHINKO!

Erotic Castlevania Pachinko:

I read somewhere that the Pachinko business in Japan can garner close to 18.9 trillion in yen annually profit wise, translating to close to $152 billion US dollars. A couple of years back, it was upwards of 30 trillion yen ($241 billion US dollars).

Konami's videogames division is its least profitable sector.

http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2015-05/15/konami-mobile-game-focus

Looking at Konami's core businesses, console-based video games actually make up the smallest section of its revenue. Less than half its earnings come from its digital entertainment interests, and that sector itself is comprised of arcade, social, and console games, plus mobile which is fast becoming the biggest chunk. Konami actually makes more from its chain of health clubs, its casino efforts, and its Pachinko operations than it does from games.

I just got the game and it's absolutely gorgeous, polish everywhere. More action. It will hurt the videogame industry not having more games like this.

If i'm not mistaken I thought MGS3 was his last MGS... and only came back because of death threats... although i see MGS IV, and V as really good masterpieces. I still feel he only did it due to fan pressure.

lol nope

it was stated that MGS4 was the last Metal Gear Solid, not technically the last Metal Gear (bullshit semantics i know). but this is out now soo

whatever the case this is definitely the last MG with Kojima's involvement.

I would think Konami will, one day, still remake Metal Gear 1 and 2 on consoles...maybe not this gen, but the next gen.

What will be MGS without Kojima's vision tho. Twin Snakes was ok, but they used MGS 1 as a framework.

It's just sad how things were south to quickly. 25+ years in the business vanished, just like that.

i've said it before half-jokingly time and time again, and i'm not even sure if i mean it or not, but the problem with games nowadays is you have to go to college to learn how to make them. holy shit maybe ki should add that to his sig of dumbest shit of the century quotes. but it's got some truth to it. or not.

i remember 20 years ago when game developers worked in teams of 20-30 people, less if it was a 2D game. i wonder how many people it takes now.

With the indie scene and retro gaming still being popular (look at the Forum :) ), it would still be possible to produce and sell a game made from your basement.
People also have other ways to get informations they need to make a game + kickstarter for funding.

But yeah, triple AAA titles, forget it, you need to show some credentials.
