Help! Garbled Graphics on a 4-Slot MVS

I recently bought a dedicated 4-slot MVS cabinet with one game (Metal Slug). The board has some video issues.

When I power on the machine, the NeoGeo logo and the SNK Max 330 Mega tagline come up perfectly, but when Metal Slug starts, the graphics and sprites get all screwy. It looks like whole columns of the screen are flickering/missing and random artifacts are abound. It's pretty bad, but the color, sound and controls are fine. You can technically still play the game, it just looks WAY messed up.

Things I tried that didn't help one bit:

1) Put the Metal Slug MVS Cart in my friend's 1-slot cab. The Metal Slug Cart seems fine. You would think (hope) it was the Cart, but again, it works FINE on my friends 1-slot MVS.

2) Tried Metal Slug in each of the four ports on my board.

3) Cleaned the contacts of the Cart and the 4-slot board connectors really well with the appropriate contact cleaner (aerosol type with straw (non-lubricated)) and cotton swabs followed by long blasts of compressed air.

4) Took apart 4-slot motherboard and inspectd it for anything 'weird' looking. I noticed only one piece of solder that was touching another on the bottom board, but it looked like it was SUPPOSED to be there. Other than that, no visible black marks, circuit cuts, etc. I even held the board up to the light to see if any of the 'holes' on the motherboard that were supposed to be open were clogged. No dice.

5) Cleaned the motherboard surface and circuit paths really well with the Electronic cleaner paying special attention to the areans around the soldered chips.

6) Removed and re-seated the BIOS chip.

7) Ran hardware test on the board with the 'Test' button in the cab. It ran perfectly. All the menus are perfectly readable, so it's something that happens with the GAME kicks in. Like the graphics/sprite processor or something is screwy. Maybe memory?

After all of that, it is no better or worse than it was before! Anyone have a clue? I already ordered a replacment board, but I'd like to fix this one if possible!

It probably is not the board, more likely that copy of Metal Slug is either damaged, dirty, or a bootleg.

It's not a bootleg, and it wasn't particularly dirty to begin with. But even still, I took the cart apart and cleaned it REALLY well. It didn't help.

The only thing I haven't done is try another cart in my machine because I don't HAVE any other carts. :D I'll try to snag my friend's Samurai Shodown 4 tonite.

Thanks for the reply. Are there any other suggestions?

I had similar problems when I first got my cabs.
The cart and pcb socket contacts must be super clean. When the game is running give the cart a tap or move it slightly side to side if this effects the gfx it confirms you have a contact problem.

Well, I tried a different cart in my buggy 4-slot, and the graphics are STILL garbled!

Wiggling the cart didn't work, and neither did not seating it all the way in.

The contacts on the motherboard look almost brand new too! I can't even imagine how much cleaner they could get!

Funny thing is, some of the graphics like the difficulty level, test modes, etc. work perfectly. The Samurai Shodown 4 logo looks perfect during the demo, the the rest of the moving graphics look like total crap. Most of the screen looks like a hyperactive slidingblock puzzle with jittery random sprites and blacked out squares!

It's looking pretty hopeless.

If it does it on every game I would also look at how clean your contacts are between your jamma/mvs harness and your mobo are too.
couldnt hurt anyway . that was the first thing I did when I got mine

CD67: Yeah, well, and YOU'RE the guy that drove up the price!

Actually, the cab was in pretty good condition. And other than some faint burn-in, the picture on that tube is very very good as are the speakers. I took it all apart and cleaned it really well, repainted the black wood and metal parts, and touched up the side logos. I also replaced worn parts with new joysticks, buttons, lexan control panel overlay protector, and have a new marquee on the way (thanks for the tip Briggs!) For about a week , my garage looked like an arcade exploded! :p So, anyway, the cab went to a good home.

And, yes, I did replace the 4-slot board. :( The replacement came with a Euro BIOS which didn't differentiate between the two coin slots, but I swapped out the BIOS with the glitchy US board's BIOS and now everything is cool. I had never worked on an arcade machine before, and my girlfriend was a litle worried that it wasn't going to work once I put it back together. Misc parts had spilled into the kitchen! Works like a charm now though!

I still dunno what's wrong with that old board! Thanks for all the replies though.

I wonder how much this semi-working board is worth. Maybe one of you Electrical Engineers out there can fix it for yourself?

Actually,. this one sounds fairly simple. It CAN be too ugly, *IF* its corrosion n the bottom board. Since the board is clean, here is what to look for. You will need the schematicx and an oscilloscope, though.

The line sprite addressing to the topo board is bad. There is a series of 74LS245s or 74LS244s which buffer the addresses to the top board., I forget the nonclameture for the lines; there are 32 of them. ALTERNATELY, opne of the bufferinbg chips for the sprite addressing on the top board is locking up n address. Did you switch the top board with a known working one? That can tell you, pronto if its on top or bottom. A shorted input CAN lock up an address line.

All the text from the carrtridge is from the FIX lines, so its an independant system from the line sprite graphics system. That explains why the cartridge text isz still good while the line spriotes are bad.
