When I was a 15 year old metal meant one thing, that is was either true metal or it wasn't metal at all, that was then, I was naïve, "it's not brutal enough", I thought I knew it all...I thought I had it made!...lol I couldn't resist, anyway...yeah, metal was one thing and the rest can screw. I was so blind, robbed from musical freedom.
Metal now is just remnants of what it used to be. I really don't care who or what made this or made that, or all these new genres that keep popping ever since the re-inventing of the wheel in all things metal (in other words the 90's and so forth) but really who cares?! Metal is not a lifestyle, if it is for you then by all means more power to you but the way things are now where everything is full frontal cheese, nothing is sacred anymore, no one is safe, metal has been desecrated from it's inception, it was so strong that it took a decade or two to finally show signs of wear.
It's like Dimmu Borgir, I always saw them as posers, musically and presentation wise, but hell I might enjoy a song or two anyway 'cause they're rather catchy. Children of Bodom, never truly liked their style, I felt the guitarist was a primma donna, but hey, after listening to a few albums I rather like them more than dislike them, however they still suck in my opinion.
To me true metal was what I was listening when I was a kid, but then again anyone one else could say the same and name groups like Dragon Force, Cradle of Filth, Devil Driver and all that stuff people listen to these days, I dunno, I don't keep up with the times and truly I don't hold the metal banner high anymore, there's no need, I fought the good fight when I thought was needed to have a fight, I was all about metal and spreading it to those I saw worthy of holding the flame alight. Now, I don't really care. Now I just look back at all the stuff I missed out 'cause "it wasn't brutal enough".
For example; I'm exploring the true foundations of metal, metal before metal was made, before the NWOBHM, leaning towards the mid 70's, I'm finding things I should have been listening since I was a kid, I could tell you maybe things could have been different had I turn a different direction.
I just like music in general and if it's well made I can give three shits what genre it is or what gimmick do the musicians present themselves with.
Half of the shit I see in this thread is horrible, I mean really, I laugh when the word elitist comes across after seeing the musical taste this people have, but hey music is subjective and it's all about a personal prefecrence, we're too old to be fooled into a trend or a cult, leave that to the teens of today...
