Hey:

I had my U.S. Metal Slug 3 in, I switched my AES on and there was no sound. No opening music, no nothing. I messed with my audio cables, tried again, nothing. So I put in my JPN Real Bout and it was working fine. Put MS3 back in, it was working again and has ever since. This brings up two questions:

1. Is this an omen of problems with my AES in the future?

2. Did I maybe get no sound because my AES is Japanese and my MS3 is U.S.?

nope. this happens, it's a nothing big. it's just a matter of the cart contacts being a tad loose, but they aren't unrepairable and stuff. also, reseating the cart usually fixes this.

All I can say is you BETTER have a backup home cart system!! If your main system dies on you, without a backup system you'll be screwed . . .

This happens to me all the time. Try cleaning your system and carts. It's inevitable this will happen when you have an old system.

Is there actually such a thing called a new Neo Geo system? I only know that telegames has new systems, there a bit over priced...

It is just your cart is new. On every new cart I bought, there seems to be a new-layer coat on the contacts. The game will work fine after that layer gets worn away.

Yeah I can vouch for that. I have had over the last year a brand new MS3, Strikers 1945, and Puzzle Bobble 2. Both took about 4 - 6 attempts before everything worked fine. Seems the first few times the games are used you get no sound, or scrambled graphics... etc... These carts were mint, not a spec of dirt on them... say 5 times of pulling it out and putting it back in and they have worked great since...

Thats what happens with old cart systems, I still have my original NES I bought in 1986, still works perfect, sometimes you just gotta blow in the games and get them in just right.

Cart systems are fickle.

Drift King, I read in the latest issue of EGM about the myth of blowing on the carts. You're not supposed to do that! Don't get me wrong, I've done it before, but since your breath has moisture, if you do it consistently, it's a good way of rusting out the contacts.
I almost forgot to mention, I bought AOF and FF2 brand new and had no problems with them when I first played them.

Yes, growing up with NES, everyone who knew better cleaned the cartridge contacts properly.

And that explains why my new Sengoku 3 cart had funky sounds at the beginning of level 2 by the "noise factory" sign.

Here's what you got to do: Go to a drugstore and look for a bottle of 90% or better isopropyl alcohol.

Moisten a q-tip with the alcohol and rub all the dirt away from the carts. Isopropyl is frequently used for cleaning of copper, and gold electrical contacts.
