The Dreamcast Arcade converter which allows the playing of the console dreamcast on a Jamma arcade cabinet has been mentioned before on this forum. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this device?
Does it play all Dreamcast games and how difficult is it to configure in a cabinet?
Does it allow the use of the fishing rod, steering wheel, and other Dreamcast periphials to be used?
Also, is this converter illegal? I believe it is for those using it to make money in an arcade--but is it also illegal for regular consumer/collectors to use?
Thanks.

If your wanting to hook it up to your own cabnet go to:

A few years ago I made me a DC arcade stick by re-wireing a DC pad and it works great. I seriously doubt this thing is illegal for home use, that just doesnt make any since... Build your own, I am in the process of doing it myself. It's just re-wireing the pads and the AV. Not too big of a task.

So this converter actally modified the DC to act like a Naomi? Thats pretty fucked up.. I can see how people can take advantage of that and set it up in their arcades. That sucks..

I also have one but mine is not a peice of shit. It looks like a small pc board and it runs on time. I had to do some minor rewiring on the cab. And I did pay a ridiculous price for it when it came out. I would sell it for $ 200 and thats taking a hit. I really do not enjoy playimg it on time ( its a pain in the ass), and also not all games work. I can play us and import but us sonic, import vamp chronicles and soul calibar don't work. If you really want to play your dc games on your cab. it might be worth it, but only get it if you can get one real cheap....NEONUT

The sad thing is Naomi hardware is dropping in price, and a Naomi with Marvel vs Capcom can be had for about $350-400... so in the end you might want to just wait and get the real deal, you should be a lot happier.

Does anyone know where the best place is to find Naomi equipment--carts and boards? Are there any online companies that specialize in the selling of used/new Naomi goods?
What do you think the cost of a Naomi 2 board will be in a couple of years?

Try C.A. Robinson, they are one of the nation's largest suppliers of arcade equipment. Yu may find Naomi stuff there. I think their website is www.carobinson.com

Stay away from naomi stuff, it sin't jamma! You will not be able to just "PLug and play" it in a super gun or cabinet.

You'll need to do allot of shit to set it up. Like extra power supply JUST for the board, the non jamma harness, some games will only run on med res. ect.

A dreamcast is a naomi, just get one of those. And unlike the STV, which has some cool games on it that were not on saturn, all naomi games are on DC!

Face the fact...
New Technology will always be expensive.
A Naomi will be affordable once Naomi 2 comes out.

A PSX drops in value just before the PS2 is about to launch.

This is just kinda normal.

naomi's pretty much affordable right now, it's just a question of whether or not you can do what you need to do to support it.

Out of curiosity, why is it illegal to use the converter in an arcade? Is an arcade usage of a game considered to be "public performance" under copyright law?

probably that and the fact that you'd profit from the use of the game while not owning the license to do so.

Because if everyone that owned an arcade just put 50 dollar dreamcast versions of games in their cabs, sega would loose even more money.

It's illegal because it's public peformance, and it's an arcade, they do make "Arcade" versions for a reason, i suppose if you did it, and got caught, you'd lose your arcade liscense (Yes you need one).

Anyways this device only worked with a handful of games, mostly early arcade ports like Power Stone, House of the Dead 2, Rally 2, Bass Fishing ect.

I'm no lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that copyright holders don't, in general, get to decide who profits from their works (I can't imagine that MAD Magazine is authorized in this respect). 17 USC Sec. 106 (edit: was going to link this directly, but UBB didn't like it; you can search at http://uscode.house.gov if you want to see it) doesn't say anything to that effect ... not that law is necessarily straightforward, but 106 seems to be where that sort of thing is supposed to be.

OK, its simple. I've worked in the music biz, so I know how copyright goes.

Go read a cassette, CD, video, computer game - some media. You will see a clause something like "No unauthorised copying, hiring, lending, public broadcast..... without permission".

Well, copyright is just that - the right to copy. Radio stations have to pay a fee each time they play a song. Shops pay for the right to play music on the premesis. Bands pay to play "covers".

The copyright law is specific. NO hiring or lending or public broadcasting. A video game cabinet does just that -- charge a person to play (hire) in a public place (public broadcasting).

Dreamcast games strictly say this. The home system is just that - a scaled down version of Naomi. Sega sell and hire Naomis - they don't want people taking the cheap way.

I don't generally trust legal advice that comes from text on CDs ("fair use"? what's that?) . In any case, thanks for answering my question .
