Differences in the Samurai Shodowns

A couple months ago I picked up on Samurai Shodown V. The controls are different and some of the characters feel like they have cheap moves, like Mina. Why don't I remember the first two games being like this? Is this why most everyone sticks to SS2? I don't even know where to start with questions. I'm more ignorant than I should be on the series and need some guidance.

SS3 was the turning point, plays very different compared to the other two, matches can be over in seconds, insane damage. SS4 plays are bit more like SS1 and SS2 IMO but still somehow different. Mina is a bitch but can't do shit if you get close enough.

Thanks, that answered pretty much all my questions. I was thinking of picking up a copy of SS4 and SS2 and seeing which one I liked best of the three.
