Skips,

Yes my NES has a PC 10 RGB mod. Now the Mario 3 screenshot I put up is NOT on my monitor. It was captures on my Holo3dgraph RGB capture card, so it does not produce scanlines. I don't know why people believe it looks so terrible.

I will probably have to sell my XC-3730C 37" RGB/VGA monitor since I will be moving from New Mexico to Florida

People are saying it looks terrible because the colors are wrong and its too dark. The colors being off may just be a result of the image not being bright enough but seeing how its dark on both the capture card and your monitor something maybe be wrong in how your mod was setup. It should be much brighter and more vivid than that.

Hey guys, just ordered my first pvm off ebay. It's a 14-M4U that looks to be in pretty good shape, i was looking for a monitor with 800+ lines that wasnt crazy expensive. He will be showing up in week or so. I would have loved to buy locally but it seems that where im from (BC, Canada) there are legitimately no pvms anywhere. Even in Vancouver (huge movie/film industry there) there is only one 8" monitor up on craigslist which i find to be pretty hard to believe. The reason i joined this thread is to get some advice on the RGB cables/switch boxes that il need to get a good picture out of this thing (im a noobie when it comes to cables and tv electronics...). Iv read a few guides and based off what they said ordered two cables from ebay: a japanese super famicon 21 RGB scart cable (Oh yah the two consoles i play the most are super nes and n64 BTW) and a Female RGB21 to 4x BNC + audio cable. Hopefully i didnt waste my money on those guys, is there anything els i need? Im going to be ordering both an rgb modded n64 and super nes soon off ebay aswell but for now i have s-video for my current consoles. Thanks a bunch.

Had a feeling i was going to get flak for that, figure someone on here has their nintendo consoles hooked up to the pvm.

Oh they're around, you just gotta be patient. I bought 2 PVM's off CL here in Vancouver, one in East Van the other on the West side (a 14" for $20 and a 20" for $40) not too long ago. They pop up every so often, so my advice is to keep checking.

Well this depends on what PVM/BVM you eventually get. You'll need to know what connections the RGB lines have. For instance, my 14" has BNC inputs for RGB, whereas my 20" has 25pin d-sub input.

A very important thing to know is that Japan SCART has a different pinout to Euro SCART.
If you plug in a Japan SCART into an NTSC monitor, you run the risk of blowing shit up.Someone else can chime in, but I believe the voltage lines are different, so you might be sending voltage into a pin that doesn't expect it. So yes, you probably wasted your money on that Japan SCART cable.

I grabbed most of my cables off www.retrogamingcables.com. There are mixed reviews of their cables from various members, but I never had a problem with 'em.

Thanks bud, from the pics the monitor i ordered has RGB/Component inputs on the back which from what i have gathered require BNC adapters to plug into. Thanks also for the heads up on the japan SCART cable, bummer it may be a waste but not the end of the world. I will definitely order my cables off that site once i know exactly which ones i need. Il make sure to keep looking for more pvms popping up, im actually just over on Vancouver island. Small world.

That is quite nice. Quite nice indeed!
Your collection looks incredible, and so organized...I need to take some queues from that.

Thanks man, if you haven't already definitely check out thecoverproject.net if your into collecting old games. Also where did you get the info on japan cables causing problems with ntsc monitors? The ad for the cable i bought specifically mentions compatibility with pvms although maybe they meant only Japanese pvms? Also the ad's for the rgb modded snes/64 say they are compatible with the super Famicon RGB cable which i believe is the same as the Japan 21 RGB scart cable i ordered. Maybe they only included that info for Japanese buyers, definitely don't want to wreck this thing by plugging in the wrong cables. Either way thanks for the replies bud.

It would be a disaster for Japan if RGB-21 blew up NTSC monitors, because every TV and monitor in Japan is NTSC :P . The incompatibility is between Euro Scart and and Japan RGB-21. The connectors look the same but they have very different pinouts - and bad things can happen if you mix and match because some of those pins carry DC voltage. If you plug a RGB-21 cable into a Euro SCART device or adapter, it will put 5-12v into the Euroscart's green input pin - very bad. If you plug a Euro SCART cable into a RGB-21 device or adapter, you will short the 5-12v pin to ground - also very bad. So yeah, never mix and match Euro SCART and RGB-21.

If both your cable and PVM adapter are Japanese RGB-21, then there's no problem at all. The PVM doesn't care what standard you're using as long as it's getting the proper signals on its BNC input.

Awesome thanks alot man, that cleared alot up. I think since both cables i purchased are specifically Japanese rgb-21 they should work fine.

First post here, I'm trying to fine tune my PVM this week and give it some attention. I just found that I could turn 358Trap Filter on which vastly improves NES on it (I previously couldn't use it since it looked so bad). Any critique is welcome.

I just joined the PVM club last week with my new PVM-1943MD. I was holding out for a 20" PVM, but when a 19" one turned up within driving distance of me I jumped on it. All my systems look amazing on it through RGB, and the S-Video isn't bad either (my 3DO uses that). Can't wait to see how my CMVS looks, but my Neo Geo CD looked awesome. I also have a 14" PVM but it has some sort of issue where there's a green square in the middle of the screen when displaying black. Not sure if that one is fixable.

I just figured out the same thing. When I plugged my NES into my PVM it looked so bad I was horrified. The 358 Trap button (what is that BTW?) makes it look a lot better, but it's still pretty crappy compared to how everything else looks on it. Some games look better than others do for some reason (SMB looks god awful while Castlevania looks good).

Here is some porn for Drakon (the first picture at least). S-Video and RGB on my PVM-20L5. You need to view the full pic for it to look really good, its a really high resolution picture.

It's the equivalent of a comb filter on a regular set from what I can gather, it's made it bearable to play NES on the PVM but I might stick to the gxtv for that job. I haven't tried SMB3 on it yet but Castlevania and Megaman 2 look pretty great (especially comparatively sans 358 Trap).

Did you do the mod yourself? I've got an extra NES laying around that I'd like to RGB, if not is there a person you'd recommend for commissioning the mod?

Ah ok that makes sense.

As an experiment I plugged the NES into a Commodore 1702 monitor and a 14" TV I had laying around. Surprisingly both looked about as bad as the PVM. I wonder if my memories of a much clearer picture coming out of my NES are false and I'm getting them mixed up with emulator screenshots? I really need to get it RGB modded, but they're expensive and hard to install.

I know a guy who will do it for $200 including the board. He goes by the name Yurkie over on AtariAge (he did my N64 and it looks awesome).

Yes I did the mod myself however I am currently only offering services to people that have been around on this site for a bit, so pretty much only the Neo-Geo.com regulars. I am actually about to do this mod to an original famicom

What board do you use for the mod?

$200 is really steep for an NESRGB install (even including the board), I've done them for $35 on a couple of AV Famicoms. I think Jason over at Game-Tech.us does them for a similar price as well.

I've seen installs with the viletim board and adapter for $125ish. For $200 you had better get a multi out that looks factory...
