Ignore this man, having the physical hardware is the only way to go

As for recommendations
Platform:Top Hunter
Shoot-em-up:Last Resort is the tops
Run n Gun: Everyone else is saying metal slug and I'm sure you know that the metal slug games are good, so I'm gonna put in a vote for Shock Troopers
Racer:Neo drift out is the only one I've ever played but TBH I didn't really enjoy it too much
Sports: NEO TURF MASTERS! (also Super Dodge ball, the best and only dodge ball simulator I've ever played)
Puzzle: Don't know if it really counts as a puzzle game but Neo Bomberman is the definitive Bomberman
Other:I know you said no fighting games, but Rage of the Dragons is criminally underrated

Magician Lord was the first game that I played at home since I convinced a friend to buy an AES back in '90, and that was the game that came with it. I'm about to play it this evening. I like Ghost Pilots better than Alpha Mission 2, so I will recommend that for a decent AES title. Crossed Swords is another early game that is unique and quite fun. I'm more into the MVS these days since I bought a consolized one this year, which allows me to own more titles without killing my bank account. Nightmare In The Dark is wonderful as well as Super Dodge Ball, which were never released on AES, unless you buy an expensive conversion. Pulstar and Blazing Star are essentials but will destroy your finances if you go the AES route.

How do you mean that? Sounds almost like a campy restriction. You can't seriously doubt the ultimate freedom of a liberated ROM, to cut it out completely from your video game life equals mental retardation.

Lots of great suggestions in this thread! Here's my two cents:
Sports: Neo Turf Masters
Puzzle: Magical Drop 3
Other: Windjammers/Flying Power Disk

Really enjoy Nam 1975 as well, definitely feels like Wild Guns.

Back in 2005 when I lived in Tokyo I remember seeing Metal Slug for AES at a couple game shops for around ¥900. I'm afraid to ask what the price is now. Alpha Mision II is a fun shmup. Always reminded me a little of the original Star Soldier.

900 yen? I think you may have been looking at the Saturn version. That would have been like 10 bucks....even stuff like Fatal Fury 2 was around 15-20 bucks.

I haven't played a lot of them yet, as I just got a CMVS and haven't built up a very big collection yet, but from what I've played so far I really enjoy: Ninja Combat and Sengoku. Those two and Puzzle Bobble are the only non-fighting games I have so far though.

You beat me as the ultimate lurker.

Platformer - Magician Lord (better than the original Shinobi for sure)
Shoot-em-up - Last Resort, Strikers 1945, Viewpoint, Pulstar, Blazing Star (all equally good)
Run n Gun - Metal Slug (the original is the most balanced and still the best)
Racer - hm, Trash Rally, probably
Sports - Neo Turfmasters (one of the best games on the NG, period)
Puzzle - Puzzle Bubble
Other - Windjammers, Shock Troopers, Nam-1975
