Best Go Pro Alternatives?

I am looking to either purchase a Go Pro or simular action camera.

I'm going go karting in the next month and looking for a camera that I can mount to a helmet to record the days racing. I also want the camera for an future motorsport car track days that I can use with my car weather it's inside or outside the car.

I started looking at Go Pros but of course given the name they come at a price which is fair enough.

Is the Go Pro the one to go for or can anyone recommend some good alternatives? I know nothing about these things so am just starting off my search.

I've had it going on a third year now. I got it for use on the side of my motorcycle helmet and it works great. I wanted something waterproof without an additional case if I got caught in the rain, and also to not look like I was a teletubbie running around with a go pro sticking out of the top of my head. This way I am able to side mount it on my helmet, and the wide angle looks great. I can show you a picture of how I have it mounted if you're interested.
