I finally got my hands on it.
It took me forever to find.

This Saturn beat em up is so rare and expensive, it took me ages to locate.

And I don't even own it! Ha, no. I found a buddy who has it and he let me rent it.

So now I'm here to spread the word on a little unknown Saturn beat em up called: Crows: The Battle Action for Sega Saturn

<img src="http://www.drizzle.com/~tirah/images/crows_f.JPG" alt=" - " />

Now, I'm not sure how low print this game is (1997, Athena) but I know it is very low print. Maybe we're talking KILLER TAROMARU level here. But the last copy I saw on eBay... it ended with a $120 BIN. This game appears rare as hell. And pricey too. Son of a bitch, I never liked those two combos.

Well, after getting a chance to play Crows, I must admit I'm a little disappointed. My friend warned me ahead of time that Crows is really a B-title, that really should be $25 if it weren't for its low print and collectors going goo-ga-ga over it. Those who are aware of it, anyhow. Though now I'm sure lots more will know!

Personally, I think it's a 6/10 or 7/10 title at best. It's pretty long, but the one player battle gets repetitive quickly. It doesn't go in the traditional "go through one stage, face big end boss, go on to stage 2" ordeal.
It is segmented in tiny sub-stages. You go through 4 or 5 or 6. Then you face an end boss, who is neither big or ugly. Kind of disappointing.

So what is this game's main appeal?

Graphics.

Characters are slightly super-deformed and it looks like a game from the 16-bit era (I mean that in a good way)
Crows also has an abundance of humor.

In the park, a young couple sits on a bench watching you battle. You can go over and punch the boyfriend! In turn, the girlfriend gets up and runs away. The BF pursues his GF while a street cop comes over to attack you for ambushing an innocent by-stander (yet they don't help you take care of the goons... how nice...)

Nice day in the park huh? ... Gimme a hand you bitch! These damn drunken sobs are trying to stab me with their beer bottles!

<img src="http://www.drizzle.com/~tirah/images/crows10.JPG" alt=" - " />

I see how it is punk... eat knuckle sandwhich!

<img src="http://www.drizzle.com/~tirah/images/crows11.JPG" alt=" - " />

Here's some sign language for ya...

<img src="http://www.drizzle.com/~tirah/images/crows14.JPG" alt=" - " />

This is my preferred character to use. His running attack is the infamous Rayden MK torpedo attack! "ALABABABABABABA!"

<img src="http://www.drizzle.com/~tirah/images/crows1.JPG" alt=" - " />

As a 2 player game, Crows provides some social fun. As a 1 player game, it gets tedious rather quickly.

After playing it, would I spend 70 or upwards to 120 on it? Hell no. I strongly advise you don't, either, unless you plan on robbing a bank (baaaaad!)
But if you do see it for a good price (unlikely... plus if you can just find it at all...) it might be worth a go.

It's a rainy day title. It's sort of like another Saturn beat em up, Nekketsu Oyako, in that it's not a "Triple A" quality title, but has its own unique charm that beat em up fans may enjoy... AT THE RIGHT COST.

Oh yeah, there are also street sweepers about doing their cleaning thing, and you can attack them! Great stuff.
Also, some enemies, when they knock you down, they pass the time by taking a piss! OWNED!!!

wow...that's pretty interesting. I have never heard of this game up until now. The sprites--main character (I think) looks a bit like Jackie Chan in his Action Kung-Fu games.

Damn, that looks great! Its kind of like River City Ransom on 'roids. $120 bones doesn't sound like a whole lot, though, I mean this is NG.com and comparitivley $120 is base price for a lot of games in this neck of the woods.

Thanks for the Steve. We can always count on you for great Saturn info.

I don't like the style of the sprites, but I take you word on the gameplay.
Interesting though, because I haven't heard of this game before...

is it not worth the high price tag?
If you are a HUGE HUGE HUGE beat em up fan, it may be worth it, yes. But, when you look at all the really great Saturn games, Crows really pales in comparison. So it comes down to a question to this ilk: "Would I rather spend $80 on a game like Crows, or a game like Battle Garegga?"

Of course, you could be like Michael and say "to hell with the mediocre game play -- it looks great and I gotta have it!" :D

I'm not at all surprised by the "I never heard or seen this game before" comments. I didn't find out about it until late 2002. It's AS OBSCURE AS OBSCURE gets. I swear, it's so little known it blows my mind. Looking at the game too, you would think that more Saturn gamers would be aware of its existence.
Not as pricey as Taromaru, perhaps just as rare, and definitely less known... Crows is indeed a funky little Saturn game.
(But IMHO Taromaru is the better game, though it is like comparing apples to oranges)

Some more pics:

"Now, this is gonna hurt a little. I hope you have that insurance."

"What insurance?"

"It's the one you really need to have, that's why if you don't have it, you need it."

"What?"

"AFFLAC!"

<img src="http://www.drizzle.com/~tirah/images/crows8.JPG" alt=" - " />

Here, our ... well... sexually ambigous protagonist... likes it rough.... "Get in line! I got enough to go around!"

Look at the priceless expression on the boyfriend girlfriend's faces lol

Zangief bodysplash!

You g0tta l0ve teh cl0nes!

Only psychos like me will ever play this game. And only super psychos like Michael Yagami will actually go out and pay through the nose. wink :p

OK I just beat Crows: teh Battle Action.

What a fucking long beat 'em up! Holy shit. 75 minutes. Yeah, almost a good hour and a half!

OK now that I played it more I shall supply more information about the actual game.

Graphics
--
Really good. Big ass sprites, cute SD look, very bright colorful looking game, though the backgrounds sometimes look bland. You will trek across streets with stores (even one store called River... a little secret homage to River City Ransom by the folks at Athena? Perhaps, and how devious...), bars, parks, a bathroom, and even a high school! In fact, a high school is where TEH LAST BATTLE TAKES PLACE! Battle for what you ask? BATTLE FOR TEH SEGA SATURN! Hence the subtitle of the game -- duh! wink
Animation is alright, just don't expect Capcom quality.

Music/sound
--
Eh, your typical beat em up fair. You won't remember the music, and your standard whacks and cracks.

Control
--
Responsive. A=punch. B=kick. C=jump. X=retreat. Y=taunt (your Crow spews some Japanese bad words I'm told). Z=block
L and R are your combo buttons... you can adjust your combos in the combo maker screen... double tap to dash in desired direction

Gameplay
--
Nothing new. Very basic. Punch, kick, grapple into 2 headbutts and throw, you seen it all before. Kick bums while they're down, etc. You can pick up knives and such. Stages aren't long stretched out. If you played Combatribes before, think THAT short... and EVEN shorter is Crows. Some levels you just battle goons while others will have an end boss waiting for you.
You start out with a choice of 2 characters but later on 2 more is added on once you beat them (bosses turned into Crows... don't ask, it's really as strange as the game is!)

Replay
--
Probably not something you'll pull out every Saturday morning but... every now and then I can see how this game would be enticing to play. You gotta be in the mood.

Overall:
It's not worth triple figures. It's not worth 70-90 either IMO. But it's rare and I suppose if a copy goes for 60 or under, you may want to jump on it. It's really nothing special but... there's a charm to this game that diehard Saturn gamers would enjoy adding it to their collection.
Very Japanese-esque.

I must admit, I enjoyed it more the 2nd time around, after I got over my initial disappointment. For a little-known company like Athena, this ain't too half-bad. A nice little game... perfect for them rainy days...

NebraskaDragon:
So what beat-em-ups would you recommend for the Saturn?
To answer your question, well first of all know that the Saturn did not see a tremendous amount of these genre titles... such a shame. I wish there were more! But here are all the beat em up games on Saturn, so far as I know it.

-Guardian Heroes
One of the most reknowned games by Saturn diehard's. Personally I'm not SO crazy about it but YAH it is good. Can be pricey, a complete mint US copy can fetch upward to $75...

-Die Hard Arcade
3D beat em up, but "limited 3D feel." Feels more like a 2D romp, which is DAMN FINE by me! :)
Really inexpensive title. Sure you can blow through it in 20 minutes but it's damn fun -- the first few times, anyhow.

-Dungeons and Dragons Collection
Very expensive ($80-100) import title that has Tower of Doom and Shadow Over Mysteria. I have the latter, am looking for the former. Annoying load times on the 2nd disc, for sure. Uses the 4 meg ram cart but sure don't feel like it!

-Crows
As documented in this thread. If only it were a $25 title...

-Nekketsu Oyako
Similar to Crows in that "B-feel" category, but it's pretty cheap. I got my copy for 20 dollars. Some think it's very plain but really, it's the only fist-to-fist Final Fight clone on the Saturn...

-Tenchi Wo Kurau II
Old Capcom arcade translation. Said to be pretty good, you fight it out in the ancient times, on foot and horseback. Up there in price. (40+)

-Pulirula
I dunno much about this game, but I do not like its graphic style

-Three Dirty Dwarves
Never played, but you could get this one for 10 bucks easily. I read it's not a "pure" beat em up though... and it has a very strange sense of humor that not every one will dig.

-Streets of Rage: Unleashed
Just testing if you're still reading... wink
Damn, there really should have been a SoR on Saturn... crying

That's it... kinda sad no? Should have been more...

The style fo a semi-comical-Japanesque beat'em up reminds me a bit of good old Kunio-kun... :)
