I tried making one mths ago but I was not successful, the lite don't turn up well but maybe because I did not alignt it properly(Coz I cant get the Thumbstick off).

I use 2 X 0603 white LED mount on a piece of strip board then wire it to the 3V battery.

I think *** make a backlit NGP

Fact, there was one on ebay a few months ago, looked like a pretty good job too. Most certainly homemade though. Possibly a hacked afterburner.

Winston - Chris R, of NGF, made a backlit Neo Geo Pocket, and claimed back then that the NGPC, due to the reflective color LCD, wouldn't work with a backlight. However, remember that the GBA also has a highly reflective LCD as well, but they put some kind of a cover between the light and the screen, or something like that. I haven't had the chance to install an afterburner myself, so I'm speaking from memory.

yep the one on eBay looked real good to be homemade--i wouldnt mind trying to mod one of mine to be backlit but i wouldnt want to harm one of my precious NGPCs

There is a new GBA backlight kit that is coming out soon, do not the exact date but I can find out. I think that it can be used on the NGPC as well. It comes with the kit to lift the screen and everything. When I get a date I will let you all know.

Yup I emailed one guy on ebay about his and he used an aftreburner kit.

He said it worked great but it wasnt as bright as a GBA { he said you could almost use a GBA as a flashlight }, he also told me he had done about 30 some odd handhelds and the NGPC was one of the more difficult to actually do,said the solder points are hard to locate if you dont know where they are ?

I have torn mine apart , but thats as far as I have gotten.

I have been planning to put an afterburner in mine but since I hardly ever play it , I havent given it much thought lately.

Too many projects and not enough hands at the moment.

Joseph(NeoMorbidClown ) ,

Thanks for writing, the Afterburner is specifically designed for the
GBA.
We do not recommend using it in any other system at this time

Thanks

Why on earth would you really NEED to backlight an NGPC? At least on mine, I've always found that I can see well in surprisingly low light...

A friend of mine has figured this out already and he is a member here , but he never posts anything.

I will see if he would be interested in getting together and taking a few pics over the weekend and I will stick them on my web site ,we can point out the solder points to you guys.

He is an old guy an very into all kinds of stuff just like this , he likes to do these kinds of things for fun , I gave him an old Track and Field cabinet a few months ago and he completely refurbed it and stuck a 4 slot MVS in it just for the fun of doing it.

Hell he barely even plays it , dick has my Metal Slug at this very moment ! I will check with him and get with you guys.

I've never been able to see the screen in regular light... need to hold it directly under a very bright light source to play it at all, and this is not only awkward but reflects the light source back at me off of the screen at certain angles.

I can only play in my bathroom because it has the brightest overhead light, but that stinks, you know what I mean.

FYI all, pending a post from candycab, here is the best documentation available on how to go about this difficult procedure:
