Has it been established that prosthesis in the Star Wars universe looked like robot parts during the prequel era, and that organic looking versions were somehow developed in the 16 years leading up to A New Hope?

Yeah, I get the theme that his external disfigurement is a literary reflection of the idea that Anakin Skywalker went into some psychological torpor and Darth Vader took over. Greek tragedy and all that. Lucas was writing in service to the idea and not really paying much attention to the minutiae. That's fine.

But Star Wars nerds have a way of contextualizing all these things. Just wondering if there is a lore based reason that isn't an embarrassment.

If we are going by just the movies, how would Luke even know Vader would die instantly with his helmet off? Him saying you'll die conflicts with this scene. Its clear that vader has helmet off without the meditation chamber closed.
