Because I'm bored, and because I've been watching sooooooo much lately, I thought I'd talk anime. Anyhow, what titles would you recommend for a non-anime watcher?

First, I'd have to say Cowboy Bebop. Great series from start to finish, there is nothing that here shouts 'ANIME' (except for maybe the end theme).

Noir. Reminded me a little of Golgo 13 with it's great set-pieces. Good for non-anime watchers because it doesn't have any mechs, magical powers or mystic swords. The locations are real, the guns are real and...well, this could be a live-action series if it wanted.

Anyone else?

To non anime fans i would recomend full length motion pictures like Macross Plus Movie, or maybe Spriggan, the later probably has more universal appeal.

Ghost in the Shell too i guess

The anime's I would recommend are:

Akira
Any Hayao Miyazaki film
Grave of the Fireflies
Lupin the III
Trigun
Ramna 1/2

That's all I could think of right now.

Mezzo Forte is a good Anime for non-Anime watchers. Think of it as Pulp Fiction mixed with some La Femme Nikita.

Of course, nobody bothers with that, all they remember are the hardcore sex scenes.

Macross Plus is definitely a good anime for "non-anime" watchers. Akira obviously, and in my opinion, the original Vampire Hunter D.

Tenchi Muyo is universally loved by everyone. I had a friend who hates anime, but for some reason loves Tenchi :)

Trigun is the best hands down! Funny from time to time but serious and to the point. Inuyasha is also tight as well. It's a romantic comedy at its best.

berserk man i cant beleive u guys havent seen berserk
I would have mentioned Berserk if I didn't have a problem with it's limited animation. I feel the Manga is light years better than the Anime IMO. The anime has some really great looking animation quality and looks boss in Episode #1... but then we go back into time and it's like the animation quality went down some nothces, and never really had me after that in terms of looking at some "quasi-realistic/heroic fantasy" genred outing. I'll take Record of Lodoss War over the Anime of of "Berserk"... heck I'll play the DC game Gut's Rage over watching it any day. Even having some blood in the scenes didn't save it IMO. And a lot of the major battles cut to some still artwork with lots of noise in the background. Kind of what fucked up Lodoss War: Heroic Knight as well.

But that's just my two cents is all, I'm sure someone's got 75 cents for a Snack Cake or something.

They seriously liked Excel Saga? Wow, I never thought non-anime watchers would get along with that series in a million years!

Man, I hate anime that do that. Ruined AD Police for me. Also, Ev4 r00Lz l4m0rZ! :p

Anything with violence n' action that doesnt resort to Super-Sayajin retarted powers should do fine. Stuff like Ghost in the Shell and Macross Plus, maybe Jin-Roh would do good. What I see as the greatest obstacle is trying to get people to see passed the fact that its a cartoon and its animated and show em' something that can portray emotion and a serious plot. Don't show any of that Otaku-nerd fanservice shit either. Im sure all the weird shit in that with characters turning super-deformed for humor, bright colors poping in the background and seeing everyone fall on their faces isnt going to help much.

It does if you have enemies

"Hey joe watch this"

"I don't like you but ok"

*anime comes on and you turn your head, bright colors show up and dumb bastard falls face first. You run through his pockets while kicking him in various vital areas laughing

sounds like a good plan to me
