720p @ 60fps or 1080p @ 30fps

I personally prefer a higher and smoother framerate over extra resolution. My eyes aren't that great so the extra resolution doesn't make me all warm and fuzzy inside.

Your thoughts on this?

1080p @ 30fps if it is indeed solid and stable 30 fps.
However, 1080p @30ish fps with dips to lower fps numbers is worse than smaller resolution at stable high fps.
Depends on your source material of course. For games higher fps is good. For movies I prefer 24fps for the "movie feel"

Also depends on the size of tv/monitor and your viewing distance. For < 30", 720p is usually plenty good enough.

For over 60" monsters you could argue that even 1080p is hardly enough.

On my desktop 30" I like to use 2560x1600 res for pc gaming...

Then again for arcade games, a 15kHz low res monitor/tube tv is perfect even if it is 29" or 30" or what have you.

I prefer a smoother experience, as you know. For me it's pretty difficult to tell 1080p vs. 720p, even on a 70" monitor, so whatever it takes to get the framerate up is preferable for me. A smoother framerate makes a good game great, and a crappy game more tolerable. Controls tend to be more responsive and I feel more immersed.

Agreed. Back when I used to game on pc I would often play games at 640x480 res and my buds would wonder why. My name should be smooth as butter, while theirs was a copy mess at higher res.

the recent resolution/framerate debates have been driving me insane... i'm just so over it... more attention being paid to resolution and framerates than the actual games these days

to answer the question though... give me a solid 30 or solid 60 at either resolution and i'll be happy... there is _nothing_ worse than unstable framerate... a game jumping between like 45-60 @ 1080p is horrible, would rather have it at 720p and get a solid 60

I agree. I dial down settings on PC games when this happens until it smooths out. I usually don't notice the change for whatever setting I reduced.

720p@60 for me. You can't really see a difference between 720p and 1080p on certain size TVs but you can definitely see a difference between 30fps and 60fps on any TV.

+1 to 720@60 fps. This is one reason I recently purchased Strider on Steam rather than PS3

Framerate takes priority. I'll even play on a smaller window on PC if it makes the game run smoother.

Another one here in the 720p@60fps camp.

30fps, imo, should really be a thing of the past come this generation. PS3 & 360 was a migration point, and with all these better specs throughout this gen, I can't deny that I was expecting at LEAST 60fps to be de facto in 2014 (1080p, preferably).

Pretty much all my DC titles ran at 60fps back in '99 after taking a significant leap over previous gen. Just saying...

This. WTF happened since then? Even the PS1 was capable of doing 60fps in the Grant Turismo Hi Fi mode.

720@60 for sure! Frame rate is important, higher resolution is only nice if its properly supported. A good share of games now offer true HD textures standard, or the option to upgrade to them (Skyrim) if not included at launch. No point in running a game in 1080p if every texture you see is mastered for less.

I'm requesting this thread to be moved to the appropriate section, like tech support or something like that.

Mods?

With my 126" screen, 30 fps mostly feels unplayable, especially if it is unstable. Things just move with too big steps. So 720p@60 for me.

I've gotten used to a 120hz monitor for the past three years. I don't think I can go back to anything below 60 FPS, 120 FPS is too smooth to give up!
