I remember this, too! The size of the sprites in AoF was insane. I'd never seen anything like it. I don't know if it's nostalgia or the jumps we saw in gaming during that era, but there are few times these days that something really grabs me like games did back then.

Played it for the first time on a friend’s TG16 back in the early 90s. Was a HuCard game, if I remember correctly. Found it pretty difficult and a bit confusing—I wasn’t good at it. I appreciate that it has some cultural relevance. Simple and attractive character design.
