So, I'm plunging back into photography. Grew up with my Dad showing me on his old Minolta, loved it in college and used to work for a photographer during my summers. Back in the stone age I used 35mm Nikon F3 and F100.

I've got a Nikon D7100 heading my way and am looking forward to it. I've also got a 18-200mm lens coming to start off with.

I know there are some other photophans out there. What equipment do you have and show some of your work...

I'm just a occasional shooter. Mostly family crap, kid's sporting events, landscape stuff on trips etc etc. I've had a D90 since it came out years ago. I too have the 18-200VR. It's a tad soft fully extended but for its size and weight, it's a nice go-to all around lens.

Other than that, I have the 70-300VR for the sports stuff and a 35mm Nikon prime for mostly indoor crap. Been meaning to grab a decent wide angle lens but for the most part, the 18mm of the 18-200 is wide enough for my needs.

Ki should have some good advice too. When we met up a while back, we spent most of the time talking camera stuff. I think he's a Pentax dude.

I'll post some pics later this week/weekend.

Congrats on the pick-ups!

up to maybe a few months back, for about 5 years I was snap happy almost everyday.
I have a Canon D60 as my regular camera, but I will admit to loving the time I spent with a Pentax K1000 35mm film roll camera and before that a german 1960s nondescript direct vision wind up camera even more.
I plan to get myself another 35mm consumer level camera and down the line go medium format too.
I'm actually an artist these days (I don't like calling myself this but I've dedicated so much time to it that it is what it is) and use pictures in different ways.
I'm not a particularly good photographer, but I like spacing out with my camera from time to time.
Some people who have never even done a course have a good eye, take good pics without training. I think you're kind of born with it.
As I say, I'm not one of these people, lol.

edit: here's a blog I had going a little while back. it was a fun little experiment.

For still stuff, I mainly do product photography for work and pseudo-wildlife photography for fun (i.e., I'll go to a zoo and take shots that make it look like I'm not in a zoo). I'll post some photos up soon.

For gear, I actually just use a Canon T3i, but when you put a 35mm L-series lens on there, it looks amazing. Several people have seen my stuff and asked, "Is that a 1D?" My only issue with the T3i is that it's super noisy in low light. Hopefully 5D Mk2s drop in price at some point.

I've got a Canon 60D that I picked up maybe 3 years ago. My normal walking-around lens is a 28mm f/1.8, which is pretty close to "normal" for an APS-C sensor (would be wide-angle on a full frame). I really don't like zoom lenses because they just aren't as sharp as fixed focal length lenses are, but they are also less flexible, so you have to zoom with your feet.

I also have a "nifty fifty" that I picked up on the cheap, but then found another at a thrift store (so I have 2 for some reason). On the APS-C that's pretty zoomed-in, so I don't really use it much, but it takes sharp-as-fuck pictures, and if I ever get a full-frame camera, then it would be a normal lens.

Lastly I have a 70-200 f/4.0L IS that I literally never use and should never have bought because it was a waste of a shitload of money.

I initially bought the camera because I'd enjoyed photography since I was a teen shooting film, but these days I use the camera almost exclusively for YouTube/website stuff. I should really sell the 70-200 lens and my body and use the money to buy a full-frame, but I'm lazy.

Whaaat? I'd love that 70-200. I've rented it before and thought it was great. (That was for video though and I was able to use my work's 5D and C100).

So buy mine from me. I still have all the original packaging, and I think I used the lens twice.

I use a Canon Rebel Xti:

EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
• This came standard with the camera, and I use for most of my photographs

EF 40mm f/2.8 Pancake Lens
• Good for indoor shots and wide shots, since the aperture is larger, hence more light at once (See here. A f/1.4 would be much better but is also more expensive.

EF 100-300mm f/4.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
• Occasionally I can get some good stuff with this, birds and what not. But it lacks Image Stabliziation and its a large lens so it does not work well in low light, or even shadowed subjects.

I would recommend you invest in three other lenses to the one you are starting with, when you can:
• A Long zoom lens (But for fucks sake get one with Image Stabilization! it reduces the shaky-cam crap you get on long zoom lenses).
• A pancake lens with a wide aperture.
• Fish eye lens (lowest priority), because it can do some fun interesting shots. I've been wanting to get one myself. ^_^.

This is the most interesting shot I took, its of the charles river over by storrow drive, at low light and long exposure.

My dad was a photo nut, and it rubbed off on me. I use a 1970s era Hasselblad. Love the thing. Optics are fantastic, and it's alot of fun to play with. I eventually want to get a digital back for it, but they're soooooo expensive

Shit like that is why I don't want to sell mine. I tried to take it to a 49ers game but they wouldn't let me bring it in the stadium. Fags.

I took photography basically as a minor in college while primarily studying graphic design. Due to some fucked up reorganization of my university's graphic design program with me being just 2 semesters away from graduating, I decided to cut the shit short (had enough units to graduate already) and graduate with a BA in art with photography as my emphasis.

Anyways, long story short... photography has always been a fun hobby but I haven't really done anything serious with it like I should. Here's some of my favorites:

U52432I1359786967.SEQ.0.jpg

U52432I1359786967.SEQ.1.jpg

U52432I1360998569.SEQ.0.jpg

U52432I1361981293.SEQ.0.jpg

U52432I1362211841.SEQ.0.jpg

U52432I1392446918.SEQ.0.jpg

U52432I1393050159.SEQ.0.jpg

The first two were shot with Ilford Delta 3200 speed film in broad daylight... I had to use a hell of a neutral density filter to cut the exposure down. I love grain.

I use an ND filter for product shots so I can really open up the aperture. Otherwise just UV filters to protect the lenses.

What the hell? Fuck them. What was their reasoning?

They have a limit on the focal length of your lens. Only press people are allowed to bring in anything longer than whatever their limit is. The funny thing is that you can buy compact versions of telephoto lenses that at a glance just look like nothing special. Their reasoning, clearly, is that they're fags.

I'm currently still using Aperture, any of you guys use Lightroom or Capture One. (Or is Photos actually alright for DAM?)

Also, I really like the third one down fateXSound, the contrast is amazing.

And I am a fan of grainy black and white pictures (and film).

I recently got into full frame with a Nikon D-750 with the 24-120 f/4 kit lens, pretty damn nice lens IMO. I've also got a D7100 DX format, I think the only DX specific lens I have on that is the 17-55 f/2.8, which I kind of regret purchasing. Great daily lens, but really heavy. The 750 w/the kit lens is much better. I've also got the 105mm f/2.8 macro lens, 35mm and 50mm primes and the older 70-200mm f/2.8 VR which is a beast.

I've also got a Nikon D90 I've retired if anyone is looking for a body.

I'm not really a huge fan of fucking with my pics digitally *too* much, so all I do is use Gimp or whatever to crop, and Colorsync Utility to adjust exposure/brightness/contrast/saturation/white balance if I fucked things up with I took the pic in the first place.

I like to utilize Lightroom for the majority of my pictures. I'm a big fan of grain too.
