Finally got around to reading Animal FarmA couple months ago I also finished Ham On Rye. Fucking, the most entertaining book I've read in a long while. It had me howling, Chinaski's childhood/adolescence wasn't too far off from my own.

I would highly reccomend Barfly. Or the book Hollywood based on it.

Is someone in this thread ghosted?

Who? What?

Btw, you should pick up both Dune and Starship Troopers. Be warned though, ST is very, very different from the movie. It contains a lot of military philosophy and it's relation of politics and society. None of the characters in the movie are main-stays in the book, except Rico. I really enjoyed it, although I felt it was case for why all countries should be a Military dictatorship. There is lot's of action, but the rest is very philosophical and some of the ideas I didn't quite understand (never serving in the military myself).

There were 13 pages to this thread, but the last post was on page 12. I'd click to go forward to page 13 and it only reloaded page 12. Seems to have been fixed now.

I'm aware that Starship Troopers is not like the movie. I read some years ago that its basically a book about Heinlen's personal philosophy wrapped in sci-fi adventure. The question I have is any of his other work worth reading?

I have Dune. If I like it are the other Dune books worth reading?

I'm the worst person to ask that. I loved, loved, loved Dune... but have extreme difficultly getting into Dune Messiah. Had the same problem with going from the Hobbit to the Fellowship, eventually I powered forward. Someday I will force myself to get through Dune Messiah, but right now Dune is still fresh in my mind and gives the other books a lot to live up to.

I think that's a common issue with the forums. Happens to me all the time. Also, the newest version of Chrome is totally fucked, so that might be doing something weird.

Anyway, if you like Dune, you'll probably me mildly obsessed with it and will feel the urge to read more of the series. Dune is huge. It will take you a while to read. Once you finish it, you'll have a better idea, obviously, if you want to continue.

I recently finished The Crying of Lot 49. It was pretty funny at times, but wasn't very focused. I started Sirens of Titan last week. Awesome so far.

Finished Dune. Liked the first half better than the second half or so but it was a good read. Picked up Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. We'll see where this leads me.

Did I mention I read A Canticle For Leboweitz a couple weeks ago? Man, that was a fucking great book.

Hey Lag, saw a few pages back you were reading Vonnegut short stories and dystopian novels. Did you read Harrison Bergeron? It's probably my favorite Vonnegut story. I also like Anthem, which I think is my favorite Rand novel (I'm not big on Objectivism but I like her fiction a lot).

I have a copy of Brave New World sitting on my shelf but I'm not sure when I'll get around to it. I'm just about done with Murray Rothbard's For a New Liberty and after that am considering tackling Hans-Hermann Hoppe's Democracy: the God that Failed or Walter Block's Defending the Undefendable.

Finished the last Dune book (book 6) and loved the hell out of it. I'll definitely read through the series again.

I started reading Pattern Recognition by William Gibson. I haven't read the later books and plan to get through them.

I also downloaded a great H.P. Lovecraft file (http://cthulhuchick.com/free-complete-lovecraft-ebook-nook-kindle/) donate if you want to. She really took the time to edit and put together a nice Ebook.

I finished Sirens of Titan by Vonnegut. It was really good - maybe my favorite of his. I started reading Post Office by Bukowski which is hilarious.

Just polished off Walter Block's "Defending the Undefendable".

Professor Block has a great talent for boiling down situations to their basic logic, and then applying that logic to other situations to show the validity or invalidity of a basic premise. Block details why many commonly detested figure is our society -- such as pimps, whores, drug dealers, money lenders, corrupt police officers, etc -- are actually heroes in the sense that they provide a service which benefits mankind as a whole despite great risk to their persons and/or reputations. I would recommend the book in a heartbeat.

I also just ordered a copy of Thomas DiLorenzo's "Organized Crime: The Unvarnished Truth About Government" from Amazon. Not sure whether I will pick up another book while I wait for it to arrive or just try to catch up on some comics that have been stacking up.

I'm reading God Emperor of Dune.

The Dune series has turned in to something quite unexpected. I wanted escapist science fiction and I got something that I didn't bargain for. At times I feel the themes are going over my head, like I'm too stupid to be reading this series.

I think God Emperor of Dune has been my favorite book, after the first. The first was good but the pacing was kinda weird.

I should be finishing up Skagboys by Welsh on my ride home from work today. I've really enjoyed the hell out of the book, minus the 50 or so pages it took to get used to Scots again.

I grabbed a used copy of Porno last night at the bookstore by my place and ill probably go right into that after watching trainspotting tonight.

FakeXsound, Post office is on my list of books to read in the next few weeks. Women is the only Bukowski book I've read so far and thought it was great.

Redshirts by John Scalzi.
Its one of the few book i did read and listen too as well. I really enjoyed the premise and story. Its basically about the redshirt wearing people on the star trek series. It was not the technical or sci-fi'y book i was looking for but i liked reading it so much i got the audio book. The audio book is read by Will Wheaton and he does a great job.

So i ended up reading Trainspotting again and then Porno after finishing up Skag boys. Out of the three books I honestly thing I like Skag boys the most followed by Trainspotting and then Porno. I am curious to see how they do the Movie adaptation of Porno.

Currently Reading HG Wells The New Machiavelli. I needed a change of pace from drugs and alcohol... the last 6 books I've read were by Welsh and Jack Kerouac.

I just finished Slaughter House Five by Vonnegut. Going to read Cat's Cradle next. Not sure what after that.

I was reading Heretics of Dune but I gave up on the series. It wasn't doing anything for me.

I should take a crack at the Dune books again. Really liked the mythology and the atmosphere of the first, but I got burned out halfway through the next. +1 to not feeling smart enough to read Herbert... Maybe I'm smarter now?

Some recent reads:

The Name of the Wind (Patrick Rothfuss)-Pretty good read, a bit overrated, IMO. I'll still read the sequel.

Ranger's Apprentice: The Ruins of Gorland (Jim Flannigan)-YA fantasy novel. After some of the heavier reading I'd been doing lately, the wife suggested it as a decent light read. It was okay for what it was. Not in any hurry to read any more. Everything about it reminded me why I don't read YA books.

The Wars of the Roses (Alison Weir)-a historical account of the Wars of the Roses. Truth is so much stranger than fiction.

The Greatest Pirate Stories Ever Told (edited by Stephen Brennan)-more of a collection of various famous pirate stories and general folklore on the golden age of piracy.

The Great Mortality (John Kelly)-a really good book that breaks down the Black Plague.

Currently reading:

Robinson Crusoe (Daniel Dafoe)-still fucking holds up after 200+ years.

The Way of Shadows (Brent Weeks)-uneven fantasy adventure novel about assassins, organized underworld activities, intrigues and politics. It has enough good stuff to keep me involved. Will read the sequels eventaully.

The Way of Kings (Brandon Sanderson)-archetypal epic fantasy novel. Has a lot of great world building elements. The big problem is that it's over 1000 pages and the first half is all setup. Once the book really gets going, it's great, but it's 500 pages in before that happens. Still very much worth the read.

My friend loaned me House of Stairs. He said it was awesome but warned me that it was meant for pre-teens. It was pretty awful :lolz:. It's about orphans who are trapped in an enormous building with nothing but stairs. There's a little food dispenser and they have to figure out how to get it to dispense the Slim Jims.

I just finished Life of Pi. I usually avoid pop culture hits like this, but my friend loaned it to me. I actually really liked it, thought it could have been a little shorter. Definitely going to check out the movie now.

I just finished Slaughter House Five by Vonnegut. Going to read Cat's Cradle next. Not sure what after that.

Wait, Heretics of Dune? Did you skip Dune Messiah and Children of Dune? Messiah continues Paul's story and Children is obviously about his kids. You should at least try Messiah. It's pretty short in comparison to the original.

I didn't skip any of the books. Read Dune, then Messiah, Children, God Emperor, and I started Heretics.

I just wasn't interested in the series anymore.
