Jesus, no. If you can walk away with one thing from this thread, you have to play Link to the Past on SNES. If you can play only one Zelda, let it be that one. Skip the NES one and do LTTP first. Trust me.

Yeah, LttP and OoT seem to be the #1 choice...

Well, OoT is part of the collection disc I just bought and I have the rom of LttP since a long time but never touched it, perhaps I should give it a try come weekend.

I've decidet to skip Wind Waker for now, 5 Zelda games on the collection disc + the LttP rom should be enough big N RPG action for a long, long time.... :)

Well... perhaps it would be best to play the games in chronological order, but given that I'm not that good at playing RPGs/action-adventures, this probably would take me a couple of years...

They're not really the most complicated games, you may find that it'll go faster than you think.

Defintely play NES Zelda first. It is worth playing, but you want to get the concept before either (1) things get complicated in each progressive game and (2) you are wowed by the later bells and whistles.

If you want bare bones:

Zelda (NES/GBA) --> LttP (SNES/GBA) --> whatever 3d garbage is fashionable :p

Then you'll be still able to sidestep into the glory that is Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, and Minish Cap.

ocarina of time

link to the past

zelda

only 3 i'd recommend, in that order. wind waker is only fun if you like sailing around on a raft for 75% of the game.

If I was you I would start with the best of them all, Link to the Past.

Next is my fav, Ocarina of Time and the other one, Majora's Mask.

End it with Wind Waker, Link is hell cute there...

Ack! Don't use a ROM of LttP, of all of them this would be the one to experience on a console.

Seconded man, a game that great should be played on a proper SNES.
There's all kinds of subtle echo effects and other treats that just won't come off on an emu. Do yourself a favor.

I completely forgot about Minish Cap.

I haven't played it myself, but I've heard some really good things about it.

It should be somewhat cheap now I assume, so there's no reason not to give it a shot.

It's hard to find now, at least I haven't seen a lot of them. The Minish cap IMO is the most enjoyable Zelda Game with Wind waker and LTTP in close contention. Everything about the minish cap was enjoyable, never got bored, always secrets to look for, sweet bosses, and a good final boss. I'm really glad there was no magic meter in this game, that always made me angry.

heh

you guys have no idea what I kicked off with that "I want to play Zelda" stuff...

Just came back from a friend who used to be my (non-serious) arch enemy during the heydays of the SNES vs. Genesis wars... you should have seen his face when I told him that I've just bought a copy of the GC Zelda collection disc... ...priceless! :D

He offered to lend me his spare system + LttP for as long as I want, so there will be an option to play the real thing, sadly it's a standard PAL/50 system w/o RGB cable, so there would be some modding work to do first (provided my buddy lets me do that to his spare unit).

Anyway, fired up the rom tonight and fooled around with the game for about 30 mins... amazing atmosphere, smooth controls... this could be worth it from what I've seen.

Bobak, the NES Zelda still is on my must-play list, I have no problem with sparse 8bit graphics and old-school controls, that's what I grew up with so I guess it's worth a try. Wind Waker also stays on the list, but at the moment I'm more interested in the roots of the series anyway.

Good call. Playing the Zelda titles out of order sort of defeats the purpose. Believe it or not, there is a flow there. Zelda flows into Zelda LttP, which flows to Minish Cap (Again, 2 is a bit a rogue title quite like Super Mario 2 on the NES, I consider it a spin off).

I've always felt that OoT takes the game into a different direction, quite like the jump from Super Mario World to Mario 64 then Mario Sunshine. Oot flows to Majora's Mask then to Wind Waker.

The term "best game ever" gets thrown around pretty liberally these days, but there is no denying that LttP and OoT could actually be considered for it.

If you don't play any other Zelda, at least play those two.

So... I got the Zelda Collector's disc today. Nice package, there even are some movies on it (making-of?), haven't checked them out yet.

Anyway, started a game of NES Zelda, then I just wanted to see how OoT looks like... ...and got sucked into it for about three hours.

Wow.. very good controls, it's nice not having to concentrate on climbing up stuff or swimming because the engine does it for you. Object interaction is a bit shaky (specially with smaller stuff), but overall gameplay seems to be spot-on. Characters are sweet... that fairy stuff is so-so but it works I guess...

I smiled a bit when I saw 3D Link for the first time... it's really cool to fire up a game of a long-running series for the very first time without all that ideological background/dead weight which ppl carry around when they discuss about Zelda.

Still, I feel that I should start with the first one or at least LttP... let's see. Is there a GC version of LttP available as well? I wonder why they did not put it on the collector's edition disc.

Nope, LttP is not on the Cube. You could opt for the GBA version via the GC Player, but honestly, go for the real deal on the SNES/SuperFami. The music doesn't sound that great on the GBA and they gave Link those lame voice samples from Ocarina.

Play the games in the order they came out, man. This is the correct order, and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong.

Just finish Oot if your already into it. Despite my love for Lttp, Oot is really the better game.

Playing in chronological order won't make them any better or worse...unless your a purist.
