It's time for one more step into the Nintendo dungeon...

I have neglected the Zelda series since day one, and it wasn't until last year that I bought a Gamecube, my first piece of Nintendo hardware...

Can't say I'm a reformed Nintendo lover now, but I've decidet that I have some serious catching up to do.

So, which Zelda game should I start with?

Since I have a 'cube, what about Wind Waker and Four Swords Adventures?

Ocarina of Time is arguably the best game ever but since you already own a GC, Wind Waker is the obvious choice.

If you truly enjoy playing video games, this game will amaze you.

It's that simple.

A Link to the Past on the GBA is also a must.

Ocarina of Time eats my balls. Fucking blurry ass Nintendo 64 pile of shit! Blasphemy!!!

Start with The legend Of Zelda on the NES, skip the Adventure of Link, enjoy the masterpiece that is Zelda: A Link to the Past on the SNES, skip the N64 shit and go straight to Wind Waker.

Start with Zelda II: Adventure of LInk for NES/GBA/GCN...

It's the best in the series....

But many who are used to the others hate it just because it's different.

Or if you are open minded, you could start with one of the other zeldas.

Zelda I is pretty good... But most of the fun was discovering shit. So don't use any guides.

Yer fired!!!!!!

I still like the original Zelda and Link to the Past the best. Solid and worth playing.

By the way, I own Zelda II so I'm not a complete dick, I just wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's e newb to Zelda.

You sound like somebody that pisses on old games for having low res sprites.

Ocarina of Time is an amazing game.

Don't be a hater.

If you've got the time, go by console release order. That would put your first choice on the first Legend of Zelda. T'was damn revolutionary for it's time, and you'll love it.

As was mentioned before- if you can get your hands on the Collector's Edition bonus disc, you'll save yourself some hardware and cart-sourcing headache. You'll have the entirety of the indispensible series minus A Link to the Past, but you'll have quite a bit on your plate.

Have fun with it!

Call me a hater brother cause I fucking despise the N64. I don't mind older games, hell I have a 2600, not much lower res than that. I guess I just have a personal vendetta against the N64.

My balls>99% old N64 titles.

The only N64 games I currently have are...paper Mario, Mario Golf and...(GASP!)Ocarina of time.....

never really played the nes games, since i never owned a nes.

i'd say :

zelda 3 - snes
zelda 4 - gb
zelda minish cap - gba
zelda wind waker - ngc
...
...
...
the n64 ones. maybe. i bought the first one (ocarina, i think), but after zelda 3 and 4 i felt it was a major let down.

still need to pick up a copy of 4 swords. i'm just not sure about it's gameplay.

Link’s awakening and the Minish Cap are really good games. In my opinion Minish Cap wins out though in the handheld category.

Yeah, I'm totally open-minded when it comes to the Zelda series, I'd even try the handheld games if they are any good.

I already thought about starting with the first one but that's not always a good way to go into a long-running series of games. For example, if someone would ask me the same questions about the Bard's Tale series, the first one would be the worst recommendation.

About that collection disc, it came out for GC, right? Was it released outside Japan? I've never seen it in Europe so far, but that doesn't mean much because usually I'm not up-to-date with Nintendo news...

Good suggestions, keep them coming!

My opinion would be to start with the SNES Zelda, then go to the N64 one... then to Wind Waker. When I say "the N64 one" I mean, of course, OoT, and not MM...

The NES one was amazing... for the time. If you don't mind god awful graphics, then play that first. The SNES one is amazing as is Oot.

The collection disk was a Nintendo give away in the states as well. I’m not sure about Europe. Here’s a shot for the game:

Buy Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, both for Gamecube, then move on from there. Yes, Link To the Past and some of the other early ones are great, but there's no need to play them first.

Since this is your first contact, you're more likely to fall in love with the series by playing OoT and WW at this point, imo. Then you'll want to play everything else, rather than play one of the early ones and think, "Yeah, this was probably considered pretty great back in the old days, ho hum..."

And smokehouse: you can hate the N64 all you want. I myself think it was a chunk of shit. But there is just no question that Ocarina of Time is one of the greatest video games created thus far. The year it came out, most places had it as a dead tie between it and the first Metal Gear Solid as game of the year. As huge a fan as I am of the first MGS, even I can't pick a clear winner between the two.

I completely forgot about Minish Cap.

I haven't played it myself, but I've heard some really good things about it.

It should be somewhat cheap now I assume, so there's no reason not to give it a shot.

I think you can split Zelda into 2-d and 3-d. I only like the 2-d, thus here's my order (play'em like they were meant to be played, in order):

  1. Legend of Zelda (NES or GBA): start with basics, get a strategy guide for the 2nd quest
  2. Link to the Past (SNES or GBA): the best in the series
  3. Link's Awakening (GB or GBC, GBC has more features)
  4. Oracle of Seasons (GBC) - part of a 2-game pair that rocked the GBC and is very fun
  5. Oracle of Ages (GBC) see above
  6. The Minish Cap (GBA): the most recent version of 2-D Zelda carries on the great tradition

As you can see, you can play all of these with only a GBA :p

I hated Zelda II, so I'd rather not vote for it.

The CD-i games are worth it for the cringe and talking-item factor.

Well put. I REALLY tried to like OoT back in the day but I played it in 2001 for the first time. I think that might have been my problem; I refused to own a N64 when it came out and missed the crucial time when OoT was new. The horrible graphics and changed gameplay (changed from Link to the Past) really turned me off.

As for Metal gear Solid on the PS1, what a masterpiece, I bought it the day it came out and was blown away.

I own a N64 and try as I may, I still hate the damn thing...

Man... i bought that think in the bargain bin when I was a kid, tried to get through it... even with that "cheat" map that was included it was damn near impossible. That song... oh god that song... Yet there's a very small minority that thought the game was ace. I guess, if you were to finish it, it would have to be. Didn't someone's mom/sister on this forum beat the game? I remember reading that.

Exactly. Now its just a boring game thats been not only outdone by later iterations of the series, but by similar titles of its and later generations.

People need to realize its okay to dislike old games. Its no different than you trying to play with your favorite toy as a child and finding it completely simplistic and lacking in entertainment.
