I bought about 500 dollars (CAN) worth of Neo Geo stuff just now:
-System w/ box and hook-ups
-Fatal Fury Special, Samurai Spirits 2
-2 old style controllers

Now I'm thinking I'll probably never be able to sell this stuff at a higher cost than what I bought it for. I get the feeling that Neo Geo stuff is decreasing in value, but why wouldn't it? In, say 10 years from now, will some other company start porting Neo Geo games to modern systems? Those companies may be able to fit dozens of old games on one DVD or whatever the standard is in a decade. It'll just be like Atari classic collections and similar stuff on PSX, only in the future.
What I'm getting at is, how much of a risk is this hobby right now? Not that it'll really matters to ME cause I'm not planning on ever selling my Neo but it obviously matters to future sellers.

Live in the present, and don't second-guess yourself. Do what you have fun doing now and don't worry if it'll be "OK" in the future. Remember, Neo-ing isn’t for those with a slim wallet, you've better got the cash to burn

I don't collect neo games, I play them.

Doesn't matter to me if they end up being worth crap, I'll have a hell of a time playing them!

I do not buy Neo Geo games thinking that someday they'll make me money or rich. I buy 'em to play and to enjoy. If you are looking to make a profit stay away from this hobby!

Good advice.

Well, if you don't want one of the old-style contrrollers, I'll take it off your hands...

i highly doubt that any company will release a best of neogeo disk. however i guarantee that someone will emulate it for some system for free.

either way i dont really care, but if you think about it the neogeo is an obscure system so im sure 10 years from now mint carts will still fetch some change.

Im scared to see what metal slug will go for...

Well, look at this way, if you simply want to play the games, either get MVS carts, or emulate them for free. But having a real system with those beefy cartridges just isn't the same, best of all for home carts, I enjoy the artwork of the Jp inserts, one of the reasons I go crazy over Neo-Geo that may never change, regardless of how much a game's worth. I still value Samurai 2 $200 today eventhough they can be had cheap.

Most of the gaming community out there probably already considers the Neo-Geo and its games worthless antiques. If it has value to you, though, and you like the games, then who gives a rat's arse what they think? :)

I've gotta go with K on this one. Why buy great games just so they can sit on your shelf and look pretty. Buy great games to play them! I could care less what my NEO stuff is worth in 10 years, all I know is that I'm never gonna get rid of it. Some are into NEO for the cash, I'm in it for the games! :D

I'd sure as hell buy all the AOFs on a disk!! If it were legal and good ports. Some of us don't have the cashflow to buy all the games we want. But not having all the games I want keeps me going.

While no one is going to argue that the Neo is going to compete with Next Gen systems, I've always liked the system and saw owning a Neo as being a connissuer of gaming. Back when the Neo came out there was no way in hell I could convince my dad to shell out $700 bucks for the system and then pay $300 bucks a game... today though I've got a VISA and spending on Neo is like one of my only forms of recreation. Alot of ppl I know also scoffed at me for selling my PS2 and some games to procure a Neo and 23 games to start with recently (after stupidly selling one back in '99 with 40 games)... but screw those who don't get it man. As I have a better time playing my Slug games, Shock Troopers etc. than trying to figure out some of the newer stuff.

The Neo is like my VOTOMS models in that while the many variations of GUNDAMs may look cooler and it's a much more accssible anime... those who know good mecha-anime are VOTOMS fans and selling a Scopedog or any AT would be unthinkable... well the NEO is like this too. You don't own one to horde over... you play it and go for broke!

"You wanna' go to jail, or you wanna' go home."
---Denzel Washington in {Training Day}---

P.S. Anyone interested in or looking for a community for Votoms should check out

http://www.votomsonline.com

I know this is off topic but one never knows where a VOTOMS fan might be and that's another community that needs support :)

If you'd buy all the AOF's on a compilation disk, why not get a NEO CD and get them for that? It's still NEO, it's still AOF, just a little loading.

I don't think the Neo Geo will ever be worthless. Sure, you will see values go up and down but it will never be worthless. In fact, I think in the future it will be worth more than it is now. Just for an example, there are some old Atari 2600 games that fetch over a $100 and that system is over 20 years old and the graphics can't even compare to the Neo, but it has games that are increasing in value.

Just remember if you invest your money in something whether it be Neo games, comics, real estate, or whatever, just make sure it is in something you like. So if you lose your shirt you still got something you can enjoy.

The Neo Geo will ever worth every penny.

Even if there's no more releases, no other system will have the history status impact like the neo Geo. Just like in the box : "A Quantum leap foward in Video Entertainment".

yes, the future was running in the present, and the present is still running in the future. Released in 90 just after the Mega Drive. Where's the Mega Drive? :D

I agree. It will never be worthles. They are uncommon. And many people have heard of them. Theres sort of a mystique about the whole system and its games. Its old yet still a lot of fun and the graphics are still pretty good by todays standards. The values might go down but not to zero. There will always be neo collectors just like comic and card collectors. :)

As long as I still find enjoyment playing my NEO it will never be worthless to me.

So far the idea of a worthless Neo Geo is relative. However some of the first people who posted have me a bit confused:

Good point, however I hear nothing but bad things from people about NGF because they tamper with the carts. Or people saying that other people are dumb because they paint there cartriges. I don't understand. Is it because what they do decreases the value of the carts? Or does what they do show a lack of respect to SNK? Either way, if it's just for the sake of gaming then none of that really matters. Does it? Am I missing something here?

Yes, but who wants an official product stamped with somebody elses sig? I used to work at a small game shop called Game Quest. They were bought out by EB recently, but bvefore that every used game that got turned in we had to put a circular sticker in the middle of the disk that ruined the look and picture in the case that there was a pic on the disk. Who wants a game with an ugly sticker on it that says the name of the store and the web site? you know where you got it from, you dont need a reminder every time you see the game. It makes the game look bad and looses some of the original value to the gamer. Puropsly I would leave off the sticker on the more rare stuff that came through. If you tried to take the sticker off you would have that nice VOID just like NGF does. Morons. Dion's ripped me twice, and that was before NGF was established.

All I know is that when I got my Neo Geo, I bought it to PLAY THE GAMES and when I heard from people around and then eventually when I got to this board that there are people who "collect" games and don't even think of touching them and just watch them on the shelf I was like "there's people out there like that". So I was suprised at first about the conept of "collectors" but now I just have to satisfy myself with the fact that there are people out there like that. And I won't say I'll do anything about it because people can do whatever they want with their money.
