Wisdom Teeth

Well, I finally had my wisdom teeth taken out this morning. It wasn't very fun. I actually partially woke up during the procedure because for some reason I had a tolerance to the anesthesia. Pretty painful. I'm feeling a little better now, but it will be worth it in the long run. If you do it, do it while you are young, since that is the best time. I'm 27, so that wasn't too old. How has anybody else's experiences been?

i did it when i was about 15 i think, and it was a pretty dumb thing, i mean my mouth didn't feel any different with the extra teeth there. but it was cool i remember taking vicatin after i got them taken out, and i just kinda stared at the wall for four hours not really doing anything. then i got to drink milkshakes for a while, as i couldn't eat; and my lips felt like they were down to my knees, all in all it was a fun experience despite the pain.

Had all 4 of mine out about 6 or so months ago (just prior to turning 32y.o.). The 4th one had to be broken up and taken out in pieces. I took to the anasthetic pretty well, I guess -- I was out almost instantly, then woke up (feeling like only a few minutes had passed) to be told that the procedure was finished. Fairly easy recovery, too -- with the week off from work I managed to get quite a few eps of Gundam SEED under my belt.

Hope the recovery goes well for you. One piece of advice -- never forget to take your pain killers. Even if you don't think you need them anymore, stick to the prescription's schedule until you finish the prescription. You absolutely do not want to find out the hard way that you weren't ready to be off the meds yet.

Take it easy.:)

I still have all my wisdom teeth intact. Personally I see no real reason to get them taken out.

What is the usual reason?

Not enough room, too many teeth (I think perhaps evolution has resulted in slightly smaller jaws, but not a matching decrease in the number of teeth). Some folks never run into a problem, while others do. Those who don't have enough room for all their teeth, may eventually experience dental pain and/or movement of their other teeth (which sucks if you've already invested money and time in braces during high school). My wisdom teeth were coming in sideways. That is, instead of the upper wisdom teeth erupting straight down and the lower ones erupting straight up, the tops of the teeth were facing forward, the roots were facing back, and the teeth were moving forward and putting pressure on all the teeth in my mouth. Just before I got braces in high school, the dentist extracted 4 molars (one in each quadrant of my mouth) in order to make more room for the braces to move my teeth into the desired position. I'd put off the whole widsom tooth thing because we thought that maybe there'd be a chance I wouldn't need the procedure. In the end, however, with my wisdom teeth moving forward, there was no way to avoid extracting them (even with the extra room my pre-braces extraction provided).

i had mine taken out in 94 when i was 20. i had no choice since one of them was compacted, growing the wrong way essentially pressing against another tooth on the inside giving me horrible pain. :annoyed:

i remember overhearing the doctor say "this is not good" just before i passed out. i was like wtf?

as soon as i got home, you're required to take the gauze out and replace them with new ones, and that has to be one of THE most gruesome experiences you'd probably have. can't believe how much blood you could spit out......and the worst thing was it takes forever for the damn thing to stop flowing.

so after maybe 1 hour of constantly replacing the gauze, i just sorta gave up and stopped using the gauze and just kinda let the blood accumulate, lucky for me the vicodine knocked me out for a good hour and a half and there was less bleeding.

but back then i was a poor blue collar working guy so i had to work right away (the surgery was on a friday, i was back at work tuesday). my coworkers called me chipmunk cheeks:mad:

I had them taken out in '96 when I was 20. Painful experience, that's for sure. I remember missing a Meat Beat Manifesto concert because of it.

Not nearly as bad as I had expected. It was right when KOF2001 came out, in fact. I remember having the cart, and playing with my sore mouth. Ah, it wasn't so bad since I had other things on my mind at the time.

But seriously, it's not bad at all. Anyone that has wisdom teeth pain should just do it and get it over with. Best move I've made in a long time.

It was great finally getting out my wisdom teeth. It felt like there was a poison in my body that I just couldn't shake.

I think I was 17 or 18. They had to use 3 bottles of the wonderful sodium pentothal on me...since I have a high tolerance for anesthetics.:buttrock:

Thanks Dash no Chris for the feedback. As far as everybody else, if you are supposed to take them out now or they are impacted, I would do is asap as over time, they ruin other teeth and cause bone loss. For those who had them removed, I am supposed to go t work tomorrow. Do you think its not a good idea?

I had my two lower wisdom teeth (never grew uppers:cool: ) and all fourth teeth behind the canines (two top, two bottom) to make room for my braces. Dental surgeon gave me some high-quality s**t and said...

Doctor: Alright, count down from ten to one for me
Me: Ok, 10...9...8...*out*

Woke up an hour later with a mouth full of gauze, minus six teeth. Good times.

I had mine taken out a year or so ago, I believe I was 21 at the time.

Had this Nazi dentist take them out, guy is a GREAT Dental surgery, but had the bedside manner of Hitler.

Anywho, I went out like a light and remember waking up and being led/carried out the back for my dad to pick me up to go home.

Mouth was sore as hell but I didn't take any of the codine/etc they gave me. I didn't want it and luckily I didn't really need it.

Spit blood out for a day or so and had to be REAL careful about eating/drinking. Lived off tomato soup and milkshakes for a few days. Don't drink through a straw or that can suck the stitches out.

Overall went pretty well, although I hear I was one of the lucky ones after I went through this.

I did mine last year and also woke up during it.

Except they had to actually CUT the teeth out of my mouth because they were still under the gums and were never going to grow in right.

Talk about not feeling good? God I had to sit for three days with cotton in my mouth, force feeding myself stuff.

After it mostly healed though, I got to take alot of Vicadin and that was pretty fun, that stuff is awesome.

As long as you dont need to take medicine for it/or don't need to take any more painkillers then you're good to go.

and oh yeah, the guys that have it worst are the ones that need to get rid of impacted wisdom teeth or ones that still have them under the gums (both in my case  )

Way back in the day when we didn't have dental care, those wisdom teeth actually had a purpose. they would come in when we wore out the molars. Now that we don't rot out or wear out our teeth anymore, those wisdoms have to come out. It's the way we were made i suppose.

I had my wisdom teeth out several years ago due to severe headaches from them being impacted.

After i woke up, I promptly put my fist through the wall. I've always been a bit violent after anestesia. Nice Doctor tho, we never were charged to repair the wall.
