EGM reported that Wipeout for PS3 will utilize the MotorStorm engine, the game will appear in 2007.

That is quite interesting.

I just sold MotorStorm, but there is definitely a lot of potential in that engine with more work put into it.

One of the things that annoyed me the most about MotorStorm is this 80 degree jump thing you would sometimes get when hitting a rock or something. Your vehicle would flip up into the air at an 80 degree angle and launch into space. Really annoying.

I have a lot of praise for MotorStorm, and it is the most refreshing racer I have played for years, but they need to put more work into the gameplay. It just gets annoying after a while.

Here's hoping they fix it for MotorStorm 2.

I loved the demo (Motorstorm), I can't wait for next month when it ships. Sims and touring racers are fun, but I like a good offroad or arcade style game once in awhile. Hopefully the online play is well done.

Pretty impressive that a PSX game that came out in 1999 will use the Motorstorm engine...

Motorstorm is a boring game. Brown Mud, sand, crush and that's it. Got bored after playing it for 1 hr.

Yeah, brown mud. Can you believe that??

Boring? No. Irritating? Yes, in the later events. I hope they tweak it for the US and EUR release.

I've only played the demo so far, but I'm hooked.

(of Motorstorm, obviously; not Wipeout 3 :))

Can I assume this was a typo and you were talking about WO4?
Man, I have a hard time getting excited about a new Wipeout.
I worshipped the series in its heyday, but after WO64, Wipeout Fusion, and WO Pure, the series is dead as fuck. The original Psygnosis team is scattered to the winds, and unless they are found and Designer's Republic is brought back for some serious artistic power, I doubt the magic can be resurrected. WOXL will always be in my personal hall of fame.

Well, it was a quote from Magic Box I think, so their typo and not mine.

Never played a Wipeout game, so have no idea how many have come before this one :)

Just thought it was interesting to see the MotorStorm engine being put to other uses. Seen as it was built from the ground up, it is cool that they are now able to sell the technology on to other developers.

People are always spouting that game development on next gen systems is more complex, costly, and time consuming, but these kinds of advances cut a lot of that out.

Pros:

Faster development times
Reduced development costs
Greater transferable knowledge due to familiarity with the technology

Cons:

More games that are based on the same engines
Not much else that I can think of...

:oh_no:

You talk about the licensing of engines to other companies as if it is something new....

It's been going on for YEARS.

No shit?

It is also something we are going to see a lot more of.

ID Software is probably the pioneer of licensing engines out for other games being developed.

Take Quake, Quake 2, Quake 3, and Doom 3.

All 4 of those engines were licensed out to make various games during their respective times.

Same thing with Valve.

Doing this is a big moneymaker for these companies.

Unreal Engine 3 is big right now, with licensees like Square-Enix. A major Japanese publisher/dev adopting UE3 is pretty epic if you think about it. I think it can only be a good thing, as it leads to lower development costs and quicker turnaround time on release dates. GoW used UE3 and only cost 9 million to make, compared to other games of its scope which cost over twice as much.

GoW actually used the Unreal 3 engine?

That explains why it looked so amazing.

I definitely agree on it being a good thing though because I think a lot of these PC game companies seem to be willing to take the time to work on new game engines. That's something that just does not seem to happen in the console realm...probably has to do with deadlines I would assume.

Yep, GoW was built on the UE3 and it's pretty much the best looking console game out there. Between UE3 and Valve's Source engine being licensed out, there are going to be some gorgeous games out this year.
