Was meaning to make a thread about this awhile ago.
Figured somebody else will anyways.
That must mean it sucks if nobody is talking about it, its been out a few months now.

I haven't installed it on anything yet.
Turns out it's only supporting processors that are only a couple years old.
I didn't hear about that when it was being beta tested, just about some of the security measures.
Most of those are in ten year old computers anyways so no big deal.

You can change one of the .ini install files and it will go on almost anything but then Microsoft gives you a
pop up message saying you won't get updates. After thinking about it I think that means you can
still get security defenition files but they don't promise you'll ever get anything else ever again.

What do you all think about it anyways?
Who is running it and how do you like it so far?

I've had Win 11 running on my desktop since release, had a play with an insider preview and liked what I saw so the final product has been a good experience thus far.

It's had a few bugs but overall I think it is a major improvement on Win 10. The start button isn't quite Win 7 or the OpenShell Win 10 equivalent but it makes it much improved over Win 10's quasi Win 8 style. I find it snappier than 10 which is always a good thing considering speed increases are seldom experienced nowadays.

There is still the old style settings underneath it all like in Win8/8.1/10 but they have streamlined the new settings menus a lot and given them more control so I tend to visit the old 'core' settings less with 11 than say 10 where I almost ignored the new settings menus.

Now you do need to have an 8th gen Intel or higher I believe and preference is for a TPM compatible PC (anything in the last 5 years will likely have one anyway).

To top it off if you have a Win 10 licensed machine it's a free upgrade to boot.

Win11 is here, but I know absolutely 0 about it other than it's pushing us to buy newer processors.
No reason to upgrade, and performance is worse for games.

I have it on one of my laptops (Ryen 3200U).

It's fine, but I'm not doing anything with it that I didn't do with 10, and the launcher is a neutral change at best. It feels like a preset Gnome 3 environment and I don't know why I would want Windows to feel that way. I've tweaked it to feel more like 10.

My gaming PC will stay on 10 for the time being, and the rest of my computers aren't supported anyway.

So, yeah. Nobody's talking about it because it's unremarkable and not supported by a lot of computers that are still in use. I just upgraded my wife's desktop last year and I brought her old tower up to my work office. It uses an i7-4770 processor so right now I couldn't switch it over to 11 if I wanted to.

I've had very little to do on it, my company didn't even make it available until a couple weeks ago. There has been literally zero demand for it but I will have to build out the automation for it in case some crazy person wants it.

I checked into it briefly but apparently my computer doesn't support it, then they proceeded to list a bunch of computers that do and their cost. The way I see it, they're trying to make you spend money on something you already have that does the job. Until my computer dies, it ain't happening.

Every few years Nvidia and AMD switch off between being fucking impossible and being relatively easy as far as video card drivers for Linux. These last few years it's been Nvidia that sucked and AMD that is easy, but when I got into Linux it was the complete opposite. All the Nvidia shit had proprietary drivers that actually worked and AMD only had outdated and shitty open source drivers.

When I built my current Ryzen APU media box, only the bleeding edge Linux distros supported it at all, though. I got Fedora to boot with some modifications but it was buggy and I ended up using MX Linux for several months until any of the major vanilla desktop distros caught up. MX was the only one I tried out of like 7 or 8 that booted and installed correctly out of the box.

You wanna know what I fucking HATE?

When you buy a computer nowadays, upon starting it for the first time, it asks for your fucking e-mail. And then it goes on and on about some stupid fucking shit.

What the FUCK is that all about?

Why the FUCK am I being registered?

Pisses me the fuck off even more than being asked for my goddamn phone number when I buy something in America.

i know you linuxfags would love it to be the next OS for everyone, but as long as I have to sudo myself through some shitass console with cryptic commands only the grayest of neckbeards understand in an attempt to fix things that shouldn't even be broken in the first place, it won't be.

Yup.

Windows & Mac OS are more than enough unless you're some kind of networking specialist who is just used to a specific distro or whatever.

I've thought about partitioning some space on one of my ThinkPads to just fuck around with Linux for fun but I don't really know what the point would be. My job is mostly management, PR, internal, and everything we make has nothing to do with Linux. And I don't really have any gay nerd hobbies that I could take with me to Linux after office hours.

I'll stick with 10 as long as possible, nothing I need or want requires 11 at this point.

This is the best plan for every version of Windows and has been since the DOS days. No matter how good the new features are, the only thing that matters are the applications you actually use. You don't want to fuck yourself into years of an ME/Vista situation for no reason. Upgrade when everyone else is using it. If anything, be as late as possible...there's nothing wrong with skipping versions completely.

I'm honestly surprised people still push Linux. The idea that even an above average user wants to fuck with that shit is ridiculous. Hunting lonely corners of the web for shit you have to compile locally and support yourself is NOT productive. It's a hobby in and of itself and not much else. The only way any BSD code will run on any machine I own is if its called MacOS.

Are you able to make a post where you don't sound like a fucking castrated , overly eager, needlessly intense TMI freak?

BJZ gonna BJZ, he's an escaped scientific experiment. It uses three different names each signifying parts of it's psychological construct.
Billy. the toughman autist. Joel. the jovial psychopath and finally Zeta. the supressed sexual deviant.

Oh I forgot what else Win 11 brings, finally, just right click anywhere and you can open a cmd prompt or powershell in that specific area like linux.

I have a couple of desktops(both AMD 5950x processors, both 64gb ram, 1 has 3090 SLI, the 2nd has a 6900xt). I am keeping them on Windows 10 for some time. I'm planning a build for a 3rd desktop with a 12900k(already have the CPU). That system I will most likely put 11 on.

My laptops all have MacOS & Win 10 on them(including a 2018 Macbook Pro w/ Windows 10). I don't use the laptops much, so it will probably be some time before I bother updating the OS.
